I Love Herring, but, and this is a BIG but, only eat them from carts who are cleaning them a la minute. I refuse to eat from sellers who have big stainless steel containers where there are hundert or so laying there waiting. This means they have not been freshly cleaned, but somewhere in a factory (in Poland for instance) and the shipped. These get rancid, they do not have the fresh taste. I am happy to pay for it, but I want them freshly cleaned.

This is what I think of when I hear politicians talking trash about wind power. Sure, it's not perfect, and it has problems like any technology. But it has power that can be harnessed to work for our purposes. The Dutch proved this centuries ago, not to mention the earliest versions in ancient Persia

Soured pickle isn't traditional. The onions where added when herring was older. A good quality new herring should be eaten without those attributes ruining it's taste!

I live in Peru (born and bred in Holland) and my native worker loved watching how people made motors without electricity or gasoline. The engineering is so amazing! Hurray for the Dutch.

OMG The Netherlands is a beautiful country. The cheese is absolutely adorable. Being English and an addict for various English cheese, the different cheese options in The Netherlands is equally magical. I truly wish that there was a sincere effort to promote more cheese to Houston, and thereby to America, to export more cheese options to the USA. American cheese is mostly artificial. That liquid stuff on nacho's, urghhhhh. Sure, if you shop around, you can find good American cheese, thats for sure. Bring me the 'oude kaas', I love it.

I always wondered exactly what makes these windmills work. Multiples of these can relentlessly move water, as long as the wind blows. I assume the average conditions in Holland are breezy. They have a lightweight lattice frame, with canvas, for the blades. It looks like it's possible to adjust the blade surface area by regulating how much canvas covers the frame. The wooden cogs, the whole thing must be made of durable hardwoods. Speaking of wood, where are the trees grown, which kind? I imagine that the nautical trades were adapted to using wind against stationary frames that pivot. Who exactly came up with the basic design? Hans VanMagyver? Genius. Woodworking experts.

Please stop leaving more comments about the Japanese language as no more are needed. Please share something insightful instead. Skansen from Finland makes the best spiced, pancreas matjes herring in glass jars, but it is very expensive. In the USA, you can find all kinds of herring in Polish/Russian delicatessens and grocery stores in the fish department. IKEA has the best pickled herring that has the right texture. Brands like ACME, Nathan's, Vita, etc. are mushy and unpleasant in texture. Blue Hill Bay is very good and is even sold at Costco for the best price! They even make Dutch matjes style herring with spices and the pancreas flavoring.

I have never had the opportunity to visit one. I did see an operation water driven mill, still used for grinding grain - fascinating.

Fred is 75 at least in this video. Is Fred still alive? If he is dead who replaced him? In all of the Netherlands how many people over the age of 75 are operating windmills? what is the Netherlands plan to replace them after they die so the windmill tradition is not lost.
