Joe "Bass" McLaughlin
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 8 ต.ค. 2006
Hi, and thanks for stopping by. I'm Joe McLaughlin, a bass player, originally from Western Massachusetts. I was affectionately nick-named “Joe Bass”, so I'm kind of just rolling with it for now. I am still trying to decide if the "Joe bass" thing is a little hokey. Currently, I am mostly using this channel to document my musical journey, uploading old songs and videos. I have been playing bass in bands since 1986, starting with the synth/pop band Diamondz In the Rough. A few interesting “hey look at me” moments I have had over the years include being nominated for Best Bass Guitarist Los Angeles, 2005 by All Access Magazine. Having had the song “Shine” from my band Untyde in the movie School of Life with Ryan Reynolds and David Paymer. My band 39 Reasons toured the country in 2005. Some of the songs/clothes from the 80s are pretty funny. I am pretty easygoing and have no problem laughing at myself. Currently, I am a registered psychiatric nurse working in forensics.
Cheers! 🤘

Garden
39 Reasons - Garden contains my absolute favorite bass line and tone from all of my years of playing bass. Garden is most likely the last studio recording of me playing bass guitar that I will upload onto the channel. It is weird that is has been 20 years since I have not only played in a band but recorded anything professionally. I miss it sometimes and have had some interests at times to play in other bands but nothing has felt right yet. I spent 2013-2017 going back to school and obtaining my nursing degree from Umass Boston and have been working as a Psychiatric nurse since 2018. There is a chance I may find a band again at some point but I'm ok, there is no rush. As you can see from this TH-cam channel I did ok, maybe not as far as I would have liked to go obviously but I have done some cool things. If you have gone through all the songs or at least some of the songs from 1986-2004 I really appreciate it. Garden is a great one to end it on. I absolutely love the sound of my bass. I am playing my Spector NS/2000-4 through a guitar amp for crazy distortion that reminds me a rattling chain at times. I will clean up this bio a bit and add more to it soon. I will have more to post this is not the end but it most likely is the end of the studio recordings, could be a hidden gem or two out there that I forgot about possibly. Now I don't consider myself a great bass player, I don't know any weather report or Jaco Pastorious songs, or nor can play like any of the greats, Geddy, Chris Squire etc. I have always just played what sounded cool to me for whatever song I worked on. However, it was the song Garden that got me nominated for best male bassist in the modern rock category by All Access Magazine Los Angeles in 2005.

The second song from 39 Reasons' 3 song EP is Photograph. Photograph is a pretty straight forward song about loss and longing. You really can interpret the lyrics in Photograph in a lot of different ways. I always wanted to do a video for it but I think it was better that we never did. Even though one of my pet peeves is when a director of a movie makes the audience "interpret their own ending"...

39 Reasons was the swan song of my original rock band days which came to an end in 2006. I did have that brief stint with the Irish Rock band The Dead Rabbits shortly after 39 Reasons but this was the beginning of the end of my original modern rock band days. Untyde had come to an end in late 2003 after Jimmiek's departure. Nate Stauffer joined myself, Scott and Brian in 2004. We were growing t...

For the first time in a long time I am showing my face on camera! As you can tell I am not very comfortable talking on camera just yet. I am also way out of shape and sound a little bit winded at the end of the video lol I hope to get better the more I put myself out there. I haven't had the bass looked at just yet but it appears to be fine, plays really nicely. It probably could just use a lit...
Black Velvet Band with The Dead Rabbits, Halloween 2008 at Molly Malone's LA

I uploaded this video earlier but it was very dark. I did the best I could to lighten it up. I came across some rare footage of me playing with The Dead Rabbits at Molly Malone's on Halloween night back in 2008. I am the one in the dark playing my 5 string Lakland bass. We had a very, very special guest on drums that night by the name of Scott Speer!! See there is no escaping him!! lol Sound an...

Back in 2020, I was asked to perform a few acoustic songs before a fellow coworkers band performed and a DJ. I had never played and sang by myself in front of a crowd before. I was honestly scared to death! You will notice in this video, for instance, I'm playing the song at a supersonic pace and forgot the chords lol This show took place in March of 2020 about a week before the world shut down...
Dead Reckoning Ol' Steam Kettle Infinity
มุมมอง 625 หลายเดือนก่อน
Ol' Steam Kettle Live at The Infinity. Dead Reckoning came in 4th place in the battle of the bands at the Infinity in Springfield, MA back in the early 90s. That was no easy feat for a blues rock band to pull off at a mostly Heavy Metal Bar. However, shortly afterwards, grunge started to become more mainstream and the Heavy Metal bands began to die off. Staind came onto the scene a little after...
Dead Reckoning - Home Street Home live @ The Infinity!
มุมมอง 1165 หลายเดือนก่อน
Dead Reckoning competed in the battle of the bands competition at the legendary Infinity in Springfield, MA back in the early 90s. The Infinity was known for being more of a club geared towards metal bands. We were a blues rock band, a little bit out of our element but we ended up coming in 4th place out of a think almost 50 or so bands that started, could have been more. All I know is that the...

Untyde at The Garage Untyde played at this weird club named The Garage in October of 2002. I don't remember a lot about this show. I do know I created a ridiculous jean jacket with patches with "Untyde" sewn on the back. I thought it was super awesome, but now I think look a little ridiculous, especially with the leather pants lol I still have the jacket believe it or not. I think I took most i...

One of the first main Sunset Strip area gigs Untyde played was at a place called The Gig. The Gig was one of Untyde's favorite Hollywood haunts. The staff always treated us well and in our opinion it was the best sounding club in Hollywood at the time. The guys working the sound and lights were always very nice and accommodating. This show was recorded on March 9, 2002 and we took the stage at ...
Ryan Reynolds is the only reason this movie was watchable lol
Hey! Thanks for sharing these memories! Can you affirm that Tommy did actually compose, arrange, play and produce music BY HIMSELF? Thanks!
She looks pretty. I have the 5-string (Ray35) version in red. They sound and feel great, just check your tuners. The tuners on mine were cheap and flimsy and shipped with the clover piece broken off for the D-string. I also have a ray34 that I've played in my church band for about a year and a half. My A-string tuner is already slipping and needs to be replaced.
Thanks! Yes I have heard about the tuner issues, so far so good 🤞
Very kewl sunsets Joe ! What is the music track? Sounds a little Irish or Scottish.
@jimmclaughlin5930 The parting glass is an Irish traditional song
You know I bought one Joe? Did ya ever get the chance to play it?
@jimmclaughlin5930 yes!
The infinity this was 1980 what Joe?
@@jimmclaughlin5930 that show was from the early 90s

Can you provide the chords to the song? thanks!
I have no idea it's all on piano. I played the bass parts. It's in the key of A# minor, best I got.
Terminator the video game brought me here.
This sounds great! Is this the original, cleaner version which you could once hear on Myspace, that was eventually lost when they switched servers a while back?
Such an amazing song and it really gives that nostalgia 2000s vibe
Thanks!! :)

Well i quit drinking until i heard this song 😂
Very nice. How long have you all been together? You've developed a great sound.
All of these bands I am posting no longer exist. Social media wasn't around when these bands did exist, so I'm just documenting them. I was the bassist player for all of these bands. I'm glad you like them, though! Thanks!
This is great, you all are truly artist. Im really digging all ive heard so far. Im three songs in and going through your catalog now 😎
I knew one day the Music Industry would fall, and Raw Music would return. Now we have evidence right here, that Real Artist are back...
In the Midst of a Dead Reckoning, i stood in the Afternoon Rain, and i realized, Rock-N-Roll is Not Dead 😎 🏆
Already know this is gonna blow up. Music like this is underrated
Is it a new band, or has it been around for a while? Has potential
Dead Reckoning was together from 1991-1995/96 out of the Springfield, MA area. I'm working on a bio :) I'm glad you like it!
Very nice song
Came up in my suggested while listening to music and I like it
Thanks
Keep going
Not so bad at all!!!
a shitty song
Tommy is a legend
Can you provide the lyrics to the song? I think I might have misheard certain words.
added, I am working on adding all the lyrics
Awesome, thanks!
Good ol' tommy tallarico, was he on the keyboards?
th-cam.com/video/0twDETh6QaI/w-d-xo.htmlsi=m67HXQ7Av9Cj0OZ5 You still in touch with Tommy? He's certainly made a name for himself...
I've never heard of your band before. I'm from Malaysia actually. But I like your songs. What I like best of all is you telling the story behind the songs. Wish a lot of other bands did that. Makes me understand the song and the music better.
Thank you, it is fun telling the stories behind the songs. I also think it was a good plan to tell them now while I still remember seeing as this band in particular was from almost 40 years ago lol I appreciate the listen!

How do you play this song on guitar?
I'll make a little video as soon as I can, sorry just saw this comment.
@@joemclaughlinmusic that’s fine, thank you!
Greetings Joe do you have a mp3 copy of this song? :)
Came here to say this movie and song has always held a special place in my heart. My sister and I would let the DVD menu replay, listening to the song on repeat. Reminds me of the times my dad would take us to Blockbusters Friday nights, where we first discovered School of Life. My dad passed in 2017 and rediscovering this song ties me back to those memories, so thank you 💜
Thank you, that means a lot!! I am glad it brings you happy memories. I also lost my Dad and my Mom in 2019. I have things that remind me of them, I understand 🙂

Does copies of this vocal version exist? The one from Myspace have been sadly been long gone since the servers been switched.
Hi send me your email address and I'll send you the mp3. I'm Joe the one who's singing lol 👋 yeah the MySpace pages were hacked years ago

Whoops I deleted your comment by mistake lol I but I did share it with you from my Google drive, hope it worked!
@@joemclaughlinmusic Thank you! i got the link and so far this sounds a lot better then the other uploads i heard on youtube. Did Tommy wrote this song on piano? I am curious, it one of my favorite tracks he worked on a video game called Terminator Sega CD.
There's a whole diamondz in the Rough album. We recorded it in 1986-87 it's a studio recoding. I'll have to try to upload them all when I have more time. Thanks and enjoy!
This song/ this movie was excellent and extraordinary...
Funny how the bassist and drummer's next band was called Dead Reckoning and their album has a quote on the back about having No Direction Home 🤔
They are a great band, because they didn't keep releasing any more music, I would like to know their history, I really liked the lyrics of the song Shine
Hi Nick I was the bass player for Untyde thanks for kind words! Maybe I'll do a little history video sometime soon. Cheers!
hey guys. i was there at that party. what a great memory. hope you're all doing well.
I remember you!! It's Joe the bass player 👋
i remember being there. wow, i cant believe how long it was ago.
I'm being in ecstasy's mood when i enter into music stream of these video! Just vibe from the past time!
I really love this song 😄
Dear gods, where I had been I couldn't watch this so melancholic-but-beautiful movie/song? It's a honest question. This song hits me hard, so does the movie School of Life. Things from a past I didn't even need to live through, all those come to my mind like I were there. The importante is, today, I've found them, even emotionally broken, I am thankfulfor this awesome incidence...
A blast from the past!
How you doing, Tommy?
