Andy McConnell's Strange Glass, 24 . Toasting/firing glasses.
Cheers!
Strange Glass, 24. Firing glasses.
The last in this series features an idiosyncratic form of toasting glass with robust, extra-heavy feet.
Toasting is defined as ‘to drink to the health or in honour of someone or something by raising one's glass together with others.’, & has been practiced for at least 3,000 years. The Ancient Greeks offered ritualistic libations to the Gods & drank to each other’s health. In ‘The Odyssey’, written around 700BC, Ulysses drinks to the health of Achilles.
The practice reached peak in Britain in the 18th century as the number of clubs & societies mushroomed. As it says in ‘The Decanter, Ancient to Modern, ‘Clubs were largely an anglophonic phenomenon, with an estimated 25,000, following 130 categories of interest, established across the English-speaking world during the 18th century.
‘Over 6,500 were active in Britain alone during the 1790s. Clark defined such groups as ‘private associations, overwhelmingly male, meeting on a regular, organised basis, mostly in public drinking places, where they combined a common sociability with a more specific purpose, whether recreational, educational, political, philanthropic, or whatever’.
‘Club interests ranged across the social scale & from the sublime to the ridiculous: from bell-ringing to hunting & from politics to debauchery. Members of the Liverpool-based Ugly Face Club spent evenings pulling silly faces whilst aristocrats gambled fortunes at Waiter’s, Byron’s ‘Dandy Club’, on anything from steeple chasers to flies on a wall.
‘Whatever their stated focus, drink was generally ever-present. The author Samuel Johnson voiced the majority view that moderate drinking was essential to a good meeting as it made people ‘talk better’.
‘Punch, port & claret were consumed at the table during series of toasts from robust firing glasses, designed to withstand boisterous hammering. The punch bowl, bottle and, later, the decanter, are common features in portraits and caricatures of 18th century club life.
‘Toasting was not universally adopted in moralistic colonial America. As early as 1639, the Massachusetts General Court outlawed the ‘abominable practice of drinking healths’, threatening participants with fines of 12 pence…’
Andy is probably best-known for eating toast infrequently.

มุมมอง 2573 ปีที่แล้ว
Glassmakers have formed oddities since glass was first formed about 5,000 years ago. And are still doing so, particularly in this new age of studio glassmaking. This oddity was made at a very traditional glassworks, Stevens & Williams, in Stourbridge, the epicentre of the now defunct British glass industry. It required two techniques. First - forming the figures on an open flame in [low-tempera...
Andy McConnell's Strange Glass, 22. Toddy lifters.
มุมมอง 4353 ปีที่แล้ว
This time it’s 'toddy lifters' - a strange item of glassware intended to transfer mouthfuls of ‘toddy’, a rum punch, from bowl to glass without making a mess. They work so well that it is surprising that they’ve been extinct since the late 1800s. I guess bit like punch… Andy is probably best-known for having grown a beard during Lockdown 1 that he has since donated to charity.
Andy McConnell's Strange Glass, 21. Cheroot holders.
มุมมอง 2213 ปีที่แล้ว
Cheroots are straight cigars that originated centuries ago in Burma / Mayanmar & first appeared in Europe during ‘colonisation’ around the 1850s. As this video explains, cheroots first found popularity amongst the wealthy & posh gear soon appeared to enhance the rituals of smoking them - including ornate holders. However, their regular shape allowed them to be machine-made, so prices dropped & ...
Andy McConnell's Strange Glass, 20. Arts & Crafts floor vase.
มุมมอง 2323 ปีที่แล้ว
The shortest video of the series is about the tallest piece - a floor vase measuring 118m. We had to shoot it sitting on my lap because it's so tall that it wouldn't fit in the camera frame! Andy is probably best-known for not usually having a floor vase in his home.
Andy McConnell’s Strange Glass, 19. Champagne carafe.
มุมมอง 2963 ปีที่แล้ว
Most of us drink sparkling wines too cold - straight from the fridge. Happily, glassmakers have provided the solution to this problem for at least 250 years… Andy is probably best-known for not being allergic to sparkling wines.
Strange Glass, 18. Leech Jar
มุมมอง 2653 ปีที่แล้ว
Few things on Earth - including [most] people - possess 10 stomachs, 32 brains & 18 testicles. But leeches do. One of nature’s strangest beasts, leeches have been used for medicinal purposes for 1,000s of years, mostly with more negative than positive results. Andy is possibly best-known for not having 18 testicles.

After 45 years in antiques & vintage glass, this 240-year-old English cut crystal gem is the only piece Andy has ever seen of its type. Andy is probably best-known for having been made an honorary member of the Allman Brothers Band.

It was used for applications that use massive amounts of power, like the London Underground rail network. They were rendered obselete by the introduction of semi-conducters from around 2000. At 2.02 minutes, it's the longest of the series, created by me &...

Today’s offering could be viewed as a little more edgy than, for instance, glass catheters. As you will discover, the medicinal properties of cocaine have been recognised since the 1850s & it enjoyed widespread popularity until being banned in the UK in the 1920s. Today’s item of Strange Glass is Edwardian, hallmarked for 1912 - just five years after Shackleton & Scott of the Antarctic used coc...

Strange Glass 12.1. From Bubble to Muff - the process of blowing a stained-glass 'muff'.
มุมมอง 3873 ปีที่แล้ว
Stained-glass sheets can be made in several ways, including blowing it into cylinders known as 'muffs'. This 3-minute film was shot by Nick Teed, York Glaziers Trust, in Bavaria. It does not cover the entire process but offers a close-up view of how muffs are formed.
Andy McConnell's Strange Glass 12. Stained-glass 'muff'.
มุมมอง 3573 ปีที่แล้ว
Stained-glass can be made in several different ways. But the 'muff' method has remained unchanged for centuries. The title image is taken from Denis Diderot's Encyclopedia, 1751, and graphically illustrates most the points discussed in this video. Andy is probably best-known for having lived in or around Rye, the ancient port on the England's Sussex coast, since December 31, 1976.
Andy McConnell's Strange Glass, 11. Parting glasses

Parting glasses, also known as 'stirrup glasses', were offered to guests when leaving a party or when fox hunting - with their feet in the stirrups. Hi found my way here by accident i smashed one the same to recover the mercury for a local scrap dealer in the early seventies at Penarth Dock we did not have a clue what it was until now, for all we new it was some kind of bomb so we rigged up scaffold poles so we could break it from a distance and collect the mercury in a tarpaulin underneath. it did not break easy and took a few attempts.

Saved one about that size from an electroplating company during a system upgrade. It had 6 legs and a lot of mercury inside of it. The amount of heat the thing put out was nuts. It ended up at the mad science/top secret attraction in the dells. Powered it up by creative use of three microwave oven transformers and capacitors in a bucket of oil- rigged to turn on by a motion detector occupancy switch. These definately look like something from an alien spacecraft more than vintage when powered up.🤓
