Prospacker - Night Riding Innerleithen's Unofficial Trails
We grabbed an opportunity to ride the unofficial enduro trails at Innerleithen before the Forestry Commission moved in to harvest. We were too late for Interstellar [ ;-( ] but we were able to do an evening's filming on Prospacker.
Local riders, David Hodgson and Fraser Glass slip and slide their way down the steep muddy trail with a single light each. The only extra light was from anothe Full-Beam light mounted to the cable cam for those 3 shots.
Filmed and edited by Marc Crowley using a GH2 running Canis Majoris Night hack firmware and a single Panasonic 20mm Pancake Lens. A DIY Steadicam and Ghetto Cable Cam saw some action but most shots were from a Manfrotto Fluid Head Tripod.

Just three of us out for a blast with Full-Beam lights the night before the Fetish Gravity Enduro at Innerleithen. GoPro HD just doesn't capture the width or distance these lights illuminate. Music released under CC Licence: Hood Internet - Pumped Up Kicks

2 demo rides in one night: 12 riders in the first and 25 in the second. You can see the difference in brightness and beam width between our lights and the guys own lights even if the camera doesn't do either justice. First attempt at chest mounted - pointing a bit low but will adjust next time
I will be shocked if i get a response
old video! mtb tech and light tech have come so far, but this video and its excellent music still get me stoked to ride at night
9 year ago! The music is still on point.
Heheheh
Looks fun
Much better with the original soundtrack but the record companies made me remove it :-(
Not bad for a first generation GoPro, It is a shame we weren't allowed to use the original music. Have you seen some of the more recent videos we've filmed? The "prospacker" video is much better quality. Thanks.
it's very goode
The video was filmed with a 1st generation GoPro Hero which is useless in high contrast lighting situations. Have you checked out our Prospaker video filmed on a micro 4/3 camera or our Kirroughtree & Dalbeattie one filmed on a DSLR?
Nice video man. I got a 650 Lumen headlamp on the way. Can't wait to try out out!!!
hahahahaha 2100 lumens meabe 210
Cyclists helmet was also a bright lamp :)
The lights were running at 2100 Lumens, you can set them to run at 2500 Lumens but this reduces the run-time and isn't much brighter by comparison. The GoPro (old wide model) just doesn't do them justice. We also do a light that produces double the light, the might X12, it is nuts but is great fun, especially on DH and Enduro trails. Plus our innovative Fusion SpeedLED which automatically manages the brightness throughout the ride, we should get out and try filming that. Cheers, Marc
what are the lumens?
By 'more than you need' I don't mean buy lots of lights. I mean buy higher end gear because you'll soon realise the lower end gear won't cut your experience level as it grows.
If I've learnt anything from being a photographer, it's that you have to buy more than you need. I'm only a rookie in the mtb scene in general, keen to do some night trails. These scream quality and productivity to me. Can't wait to receive mine guys at full-beam. XD
Can't argue with that.
Weak ass GoPro 1st generation - not renowned for night time videography.
go faster...
weak ass lights!
They are bright. Not in a nasty hot spot way but in a nice and wide even beam, something the camera just can't show :-( As you can see, with the exception of the 2nd and 3rd cable cam shots, the only two lights were the ones on the bikes. So you get the idea just how well they work. Hoping for a bit more filming, maybe in the snow, maybe doing some jumps...
Thanks. Watching it just makes me want to get out on my bike.
Loving this Marc.
Thanks! These are some serious lights! I went to look them up and they are not only expensive but lumened out! Sweet!
The boys made it look easy in the video. You just don't get how steep that trail is on camera, especially at night. I think watching coz1330 video of Prospacker, Innerleithen gives people an idea. I struggled with walking (climbing!) down it with a camera and bag.
Hi, Both riders were using Full Beam lights. The first rider was using a Night-Nemesis on his bars and the second was using a Nightfire on his helmet. Both were run at 2100 Lumens but are capable of 2500 Lumens. We also do a intelligent light, Fusion SpeedLED which constantly monitors the bikes speed and adjusts the brightness to exactly what the rider needs which also extends the lights run time. And if they're not bright enough we do an X12 light which pushes out over 4500Lumens. Thanks, Marc
pro spacker is hard enough in the daylight, good effort!
What type of lights did you all use on the bike and helmet?
The contractors have moved in closer to the trail now and that section of the hill should NOT be accessed, it's too dangerous. Trees are falling across the access routes, in and out, and it is very hazardous when they are harvesting with the machinery and the likes. Give them until April and we'll be able to return. Until then, head up to the top of the official downhill trails and attack the other Enduro routes that start there.
Mountain Bike Trail Names are just the best.
Nice one! Hardtails are BEAST!
I like the bit where the camera tried to kill me
@jumpandlift EMI were restricting the viewing of the video in several countries so I was frorced to let TH-cam overlay music :-(
the song fit the video perfectly, now this is horrible :/

@lynnev5bug Thanks for the info, but it was a standard GoPro Wide not th HD or HD2 verson, hence the poor picture quality. Your video definately shows how the GoPro HD is much better in low light conditions.
For best results using the Gopro at night set it to r5 1080p 30fps. I have a video I made using those settings mountain biking at night. Just click on my user name to see it.
@ete8sopot need for speed 4 had similar music in the menus...
@rupert154 Hi, It's at Inerleithen in the Scottish Borders, UK. It is part of the 7stanes MTB sites across the area. Some of it is the XC course, other sections unofficial or part of the downhill trails. One of my favourite places to ride.
Where is this?
It's all about getting out there and having fun, enjoy!
@frepi It's called "Empty Streets" by Cyantific available on Hospital Records (or itunes). They also have a podcast which is very good.
What is the title of this song?
@michaelcamden1 I prefer riding with the bar light as the shadows aren't hidden behind the obsticles on the trail so it is much easier to read the trail. I find helmet lights flatten the ground and also add weight and your helmet wobbles too which isn't great for concentration. Each to their own, people like what they know and know what they like. We also do a helmet light at the request of several riders, just as bright but more compact and lighter.
Why would you do XC with Bar mount light? Put it on your helmet and SEE the trail where you look not where you steer. Ride on
The video was shot with a standard GoPro which really does struggle with low light, if you have the HD it will perform better in a night riding situation. Our lights were configured to 2100 Lumens so you should be able to get something with the Hope unit. We're looking forward to doing some filming with the X12, it's amazing. Did you see our other video? It was filmed using a DSLR so less noise than with the GoPro and old MiniDV camera on this one. Looking forward to seeing your video. Marc
Love the video - great demonstration of the lights and also the GoPro. Very impressive output on the lights, certainly not the cheap end of the market though...quality costs. I've just ventured into night rides so didn't spent anywhere near the kind of money the Nemesis or X12 requires/demands (rightly so if the video is anything to go by!) I'll try a video response with my first ever GoPro video at night with my Hope R4 over the weekend ;)
Still laugh when I see Dexter's feet dangling.
lol man, awesome vídeo!! you're very fast, but your friend ride like a motorcycle
I've since sold my Epic in preference to a Stumpy (2009 Pro Carbon model). I'd recommend an Epic if you do any competitive events OR if you're not into fast, rough or jumpy descents. Though I did Have Reba U-Turns which are an amazing fork. I'f you're happy to be a little slower up the hills but want to have more fun on the descents, go for the Stumpy. It inspires a bit more confidence landing it and the slightly more upright riding position helps on the steep, technical descents. Marc
Looks fun.. upgrading my Mountain bike soon I hope but was leaning towards the Stumpjumper for a good all around bike. You have enough plushness in that thing for fast decents as well as its flat and climbing ability?
