DIY Beehive Frames - Never buy beehive frames again
For a full description of how to build beehive frames yourself, check out our blog - www.revivalwoods.com/blog/2019/3/18/how-to-build-a-beehive-part-3-building-frames
Building beehive frames is both tedious and challenging - but very rewarding. The basic process is to set up your saw, and then run your boards through over and over and over again. There are 3 pieces to cut - side bars, top bars, and bottom bars. The side bars are cut from two-by lumber and the top and bottom bars are from standard one-by boards.
Check out the Material list and Cut list to build it yourself at - www.revivalwoods.com/blog/2019/3/18/how-to-build-a-beehive-part-3-building-frames
Side bars - 0:00
Bottom Bars - 2:51
Top Bars - 3:49
Assembly - 5:36
For this project we used:
Table saw with dado stack
Miter Saw

Wood Glue
3/4" brad nails

      Not really. The Beekeeper accountant did a video about the cost of making frames. He showed that building frames vs buying the parts to assemble them was a $0.01 difference. It was cheaper to build but not by much. I guess it’s just a “pick your poison” moment. On the other hand…. You have a much lesser chance of losing a finger if you just buy them. lol

    A thought for the top would maybe be to put a hinge on the back and on the front a latch of some sort, keeping the top closed untill you are ready to open it, but also allowing easy access to the inside without disturbing the bees unnecessarily.

    I'm interested in these and building one or 2. But how do you add supers for collecting honey? Or are these just for reproducing bees and no honey collection

    • @jessebennett3221
      @jessebennett3221 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have to use deep frames for honey, the bees usually naturally place brood by the entrance and honey further in. But you can also make a queen excluder to place where you want it.

  • @williamstilianessis9216

    From what I saw, you would need to unscrew the top to access the swarm or transfer frames to an established colony. Why did you chose that option over an easier access?

    • @RyanBarnes
      @RyanBarnes ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen a couple other channels talk about swarm traps and their reasoning is that because these are left a bit high up and wind can be an issue, having a removable top (easier?) might blow away.

    • @weirjwerijrweurhuewhr588
      @weirjwerijrweurhuewhr588 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RyanBarnes It's also just a very cheap / frugal / quick / simple way to build it. A removeable lid is a bit more work. Often these things hang high up in trees, so it's also easier to transport this way, especially when you have to take it up a ladder to hang it in a tree.
