    Very nice work here folks. We're getting ready to rebuild a 20' flatbed that was originally a camper frame. Capacity goal is around 4000 to 5000 total gvw. Did you all do anything yo reinforce the front of the frame triangle? I'm being told to add a long spine down the center. Seems like a decent idea.

I'm almost down to the frame on tearing down one exactly like this and plan on doing the same. This is the best camper trailer conversion I've ever seen. All I can recall is we spent about 2500 on materials, but we had to put new tires and brakes on it also. Some steel we had in stock. Lumber was close to $750. I had a lot of the conduit in supply as I buy in bulk. Sold the trailer for $3500, so figure time, it was only a $500 profit, but it was a fun build

    • @WarriorWoodshop
      @WarriorWoodshop ปีที่แล้ว

      @@timscon2001 do you have a shortbed or longbed truck? I plan on putting an upper deck on my current goosneck, I will be using 1 1/2" square 14 ga square tubing, then border it with the 1 1/4" angle as we did on this trailer. Not sure you will have enough connection points as popup decks don't have equal crossmembers, plus there isn't usually enough cross members to support real weight. Not sure if it's worth the hassle. To each his own.

      not the frame that came with this camper. some of the newer camper frames have larger box tubing. this one was only 6" rectangular tubing, so maybe a regular car, but definitely not a truck due to frame size

    • @WarriorWoodshop
      @WarriorWoodshop ปีที่แล้ว

      that thought has crossed my mind, however we ended up converting a 32ft enclosed gooseneck into a toy hauler during covid. we can haul 3 atvs or 2 atvs and one utv this way. only downside is dirty bikes in the camper when done with weekend. but we can sleep 6 vs 2-4 in a cabover camper.

    I'm being offered for free an old 80s or 90s fifth wheel that is too far gone to be saved. I didn't have a tape measure to I walked it out with my size 13 footwear lol. The deck is 17 feet (with 13 size boots) by 7 ½ foot. It's an old coachmen camper with 4,000 lb tandem axles and a gooseneck adapter already on it. The frame is fully boxed tubing that looks to be 2 inches wide by 6 inches tall with dual framework (2 on each side of the frame) leading up to the neck, looking to be 2x8 channels. Half the camper is rotten and you can pull sheet metal off in certain places to see rotten wood and whatnot. I think I'll pull it over to my place and see what all works and then pull the appliances and list them up on Facebook marketplace to help fund my project. Along with separating all copper, aluminum, and iron for scrapping to fund putting a deck on it, lights, and tires. Any suggestions on where I should start on tearing down an old camper? I was thinking start with taking the AC off, pull appliances, bust out cabinets, pull the slide out, cut the roof into sections from the inside so I don't have a risk of falling through (tossing it outside of course), break walls into sections until it's just regular flooring. Then of course pull up the flooring until it's just the frame. This is on an old Coachmen 251 RL. If you look it up online look for the one with the entry door behind the axles, not infront.

    • @WarriorWoodshop
      @WarriorWoodshop 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was before the metal prices went up. I paid $600 for the frame, he was asking a $1000. He countered with 800, I said 600 is best or I'm on my way home. He wanted it gone. However the big thing was is that it had a title. No title, most states are really skeptical due to stolen trailer getting called "homemade". IN missouri, you have to show receipts and sometimes photos to prove you built it. Finally, I expected to have $1500 in it, so a $2500 trailer, ended up with bad hubs, tires, etc, and it cost almost $3000 to fix it up with lumber prices. The deck alone was almost $1000. With all that being said, I still wouldn't offer or even look for more than $750. Yeah prices are higher, but so is everything else and I would rather buy an actual utility flatbed for $5k then do all the work to a converted camper for $3500 in costs.

      To move it yes, unless you have the short short bed. It was reasonable to turn with the 6.75 superduty bed. With a couple of side by sides on it, yes. but take it easy. Short answer, yes, but only if you have to. There is an extra 1000 pounds in the gooseneck at least. Stick with a 20ft utility trailer, much lighter, then put one more atv in your back end.

      Because of the rub rails and style of ramps you can with this trailer. And I would normally agree with you, however the person who started this trailer only framed out the rails to 7'6" which would make it tight for a UTV to sit crossways. Although it's done frequently, most UTVs are over 8'6" wide which is the max width on highway. Most are like 9' so no one really bothers, but a bored or grumpy DOT/highway patrol officer could make your weekend riding trip very frustrating.

    Found a cheap camper might try my had at this for a toy hauler! Few questions for you! Was that frame have a v in the front from factory? Or was it added? And how long was that trailer? The one I found is a 26 footer end to end

    • @WarriorWoodshop
      @WarriorWoodshop 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trailer in this video is 34ft long. The previous owner had cut the top back to 6ft wide and then angled the front corners also. I would have not made the slant so large, just a foot back on each corner. If that was the case, then a small utv could have gone up there not just an aTV. The other thing to consider is a lot of camper frames have the axles too far forward. This is to balance out all the liquid tank weights and keep the weight off the tow vehicle for a smoother ride. The problem with this is that if you have too much weight behind the axles, then you get the death wobble. Realistically the rear axle on is where the front axle should have been positioned. Look at your frame, how heavy duty is it. A lot of the frames now are 2x6 stacked to make 12" or a 2x8 box tubing. If its open C channel, I'd shy away. There was more give in the tongue than I care to admit. In the beginning I thought we could sell the heavy duty 20+5 GN trailer. There is no comparison.

    • @WarriorWoodshop
      @WarriorWoodshop 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not this particular one. it only has a 6" frame. I wouldn't hesitate to load a car or utvs, or utility tractor. Equipment such as skid loaders, etc would need an 8-12" frame. Several of the 5th wheel frames are doubled up to make 12" thick which allows them to get over the axles. This trailer had to have riser blocks to get it above the axle.
