The Ship I Love - Felix McGlennon (a tribute to Flambards Victorian Village) - Dominion reed organ
Instrumental cover of the 1893 music hall / parlour song "The Ship I Love", played by Peter Tylor on his overhauled antique Dominion reed organ, 24/11/2024.
A gallant ship was labouring,
Labouring in the sea;
The Captain stood amongst his crew,
“Gather around,” said he.
“This ship is doomed and sinking,
There on the lee is land,
Then launch the boats and pull away,
But here at my post I'll stand.
Goodbye, my lads, goodbye!
Goodbye, my lads, goodbye!”
(Chorus:)
I'll stick to the ship, lads,
You save your lives,
I've no one to love me,
You've children and wives;
You take to the boats, lads,
Praying to heaven above,
But I'll go down in the angry deep,
With the ship I love.
The crew stood hesitating,
Their hearts were staunch and true;
With tear-dimmed eyes spoke up the mate,
“Sir, we will die with you!”
The Captain cried, “What? Mutiny?
I am the Captain here!
So launch the boats and pull away,
And think of your children dear.
Goodbye, my lads, goodbye!
Goodbye, my lads, goodbye!”
(Chorus)
(Words and music by Felix McGlennon, 1855-1943)
This tune (minus the "Goodbye" lines) was one of a set of three recordings of music hall songs from the 1890s, played on Regina and Polyphon music boxes of the same era, that enhanced the authentic period atmosphere of the delightful Victorian Village recreated at Flambards Theme Park, Helston, Cornwall, which closed permanently in November 2024 after nearly 50 years of operation. Flambards, which I visited a number of times in the late 1980s and early 1990s, was a small but significant part of my later childhood and early teens. It is most fondly remembered by some for its thrill rides including the Hornet Coaster, SkyForce and the Colorado Log Flume; however, for me, the historical exhibits - and, above all, the Victorian Village - were very much the main attraction. Indeed, I reckon that the place had a formative influence upon me: it surely contributed to and confirmed, if it did not in fact initiate, my lifelong interest in various aspects of late 19th and early 20th century British history and culture, and in antique and vintage things generally, which began in earnest at around the same time as my parents first took me there. It is therefore fitting that I should record my own rendition of this tune as a tribute to the Victorian Village, which I hope can somehow - along with the Britain in the Blitz exhibit and the Chemist Shop Time Capsule - be retained or resurrected in some form, whatever befalls the rest of the park.
I came across this song - which originated in the largely working class music halls (to which it was introduced by Tom Costello), but which also proved popular in middle class parlours - several years ago in "The Parlour Song Book" edited by Michael R. Turner (London, Michael Joseph Ltd, 1972); this is the book that I have in front of me here, although what you hear is to a large extent my own unwritten arrangement, for I am not playing the accompaniment exactly as printed. It was by pure chance that I came across and recognised this tune back then; I did not know what the other two tunes that played alongside it at Flambards were until very recently, but I have now identified them as "Twiggy Voo?" (1892) and "Our Lodger's Such A Nice Young Man" (1897). All three recordings are taken from the 1971 Saydisc LP "Mechanical Music Hall", and can be heard at:

    Hello Peter, I wondered if you have a copy of the sheet music for this? I’m getting married next week in St Albans cathedral and I’m struggling to find it. Your help would be much appreciated!

      Hi Ben, I'm afraid the version of the song you hear here is not written down - I had the version in the 2014 edition of "Mission Praise" (no. 1334) in front of me, but simplified it quite considerably at sight. There are various arrangements on the Musescore site, which could perhaps be adapted as needed - if you search on Google for "cornerstone hymn musescore" the relevant page should show up. There is also an SATB arrangement by David Bruce Murray on the "Sheet Music Direct" website (arranged in the style of a traditional hymn tune - no intro or interludes), which should show up if you do the relevant search; this you have to pay to download, although the preview actually shows it in full. Hope this helps!

    Delightful. I've always wondered what those little screens and curtains you often see behind the organist were for -- was the movement of the player considered distracting for the congregation?

      @@Flipdrivel Thank you! That's not something I've really thought about, and there doesn't seem to be much information about it online either - I've found just one reference, which seems to confirm your theory. However, I wonder if the curtain might perhaps also serve the secondary purpose of helping to keep the organist warm in cold weather?
