I was born at the now defunct old Silver Cross location in the 60's and lived in Lockport until 34. There was nothing there until the 90's when the build up started. Rt. 59 to Orland Park was also nothing but corn fields as well which most who wanted to shop at a mall setting went to either Orland mall or Jefferson Square and Louis in Joliet. This of course was in the 70's - 80's as Jefferson Square is long gone. The neighborhood I grew up in, Bonnie Brae, had a bad reputation but it wasn't as high crime as many proclaimed it to be. They were the least expensive 950 sq. ft. basic pre fab ranch homes in Lockport that looked like trailer park homes on foundations. Mostly GI's that wanted affordable housing and moved out of Chicago to the suburbs to raise kids. I remember as a kid in the 70's the A&P, Coast to Coast, Ben Franklin, Corwins, Ordman's Park & Shop and Sage's meats. Sage's was in our neighborhood a block over which was nice. I ended up working at Ordman's and Sage's in my teens. I moved out in 2005 about 25 miles west I-80 and needless to say I occasionally go back and the growth is still striking to this day. Life's a journey and my wife and I are now in our 50's and the next phase is leaving Illinois for lower taxes and the beautiful Rockies which we will do as soon as my wife retires but I am born and raised Lockport Illinois and I'm sure some part of me eventually will miss it.
