1975 Grand National

L'Escargot made four Grand National appearances, his first in 1972 when he fell, 1973 he was placed 3rd, in 1974 2nd, culminating in his win in 1975, at aged 12 , ridden by Tommy Carberry. Tommy Carberry who was five times Champion National Hunt jockey and twice overall Champion Irish jockey had previously ridden L'Escargot to victory twice in The Cheltenham Gold Cup in 1970/71.

Red Rum wins his first Grand National - ridden by Brian Fletcher the pair charged to victory on 31st March 1973 breaking the course record for the Grand National by 19 seconds
Brian Fletcher said Rummy was travelling so badly early on he almost pulled him up. This was probably an early indicator of a difference of opinion between him and Ginger McCain which ended in 76 after a race at Newcastle (I think?). Fletcher thought Rummy's best days were behind him and did not want to punish the horse in races which is why Tommy Stack was brought back.
Apparently red rum suffered from pedal osteitis.
More like a demolition derby than a horse race. At one point I think there were more riderless horses running in the field than mounted ones! Hate to see horses hurt but hope they all walked away OK. Saw one rider very hurt, holding his head. Too many horses starting out, like a cavalry charge. No wonder the leaders hung back till the field had winnowed itself out. It comes close to being sadistic.
I know he lost to the great Redrum but Crisp giving Redrum almost 2stone was unbelievable, I mean if he'd managed to hold on that would arguably go down as one of the very best handicap performances of all time especially when we all know what Redrums record was at Aintree!! 👍
Still brings tears to my eyes.King!
When fences were national fences.
I bet red rum and lost my girl friend
Great to see
The Jockey on Beau Bob , should have been banned. Beau bob the veteran of several nationals , had been up with the pace but had dropped to the rear and was practically staggering when approaching second bechers brook. Yet still he was made to jump it and crashed to the ground lifeless. Such a needless death. Blemished l'escargots brilliant win from Red Rum for me.
I was working in a bookmakers that day and got told off for cheering Rummy making history...well there was a mountain of bets for him!

The first grand national success for a woman trainer in the shape of Jenny Pitman. Her ex husband Richard had finished second on Crisp. Also a journey back for Aldaniti fr😢injury and for jockey Bob Champion recovering from cancer having undergone chemo therapy. Probably not a dry eye in the grandstand, a heartwarming story. Not the best horse to ever win a national but not the worst either
Jenny Pitmans wins were in 83 (Corbiere) and 95 (Royal Athlete). She also trained Esha Ness who finished 1st in the 93 'National that never was' plus Garrison Savannah who finished 2nd in 1991. Aldaniti was trained by Josh Gifford not Jenny.
@ yes my mistake and thanks for pointing it out. Of course Aldaniti was trained by the late great Josh Gifford
The mighty one L’Escargot, foaled in 1963, his owner stumped up 3500 guineas for this guy. Won the Gloucester hurdle at the festival in 1968, favorite for the 1969 champion hurdle won by Persian War but only 6th. Went novice chasing in 1970 and connections opted for the Gold Cup which he duly won at 33/1. The favorite Kinloch Brae coming down early ( same owner as Arkle) , won the Gold Cup again in 71 and fourth in 72 and 73. Brought down first national attempt in 72 at Bechers ( if i recall correctly) placed in 73 ( 3rd i think ) and second in 74, he caught Red Rum literally doing what Rummy had done to Crisp in 73, making up 15 lengths literally from the last. No mean feat for a 12 year old. The owner announced his immediate retirement and gave the horse to his wife who promptly put him back in training and raced him in the Kerry National. Her husband in a fit of rage demanded his return to him and promptly flew him to America for his retirement. L’Escargot was no stranger to America having been USA champion chaser in 71 i think. Sadly L’Escargot passed away in 84. He never knew when he was beat, was an incredible horse and in my opinion, no horse this century ( 2000 onwards) would have got near him. Kauto Star and Denman he would have picked up and carried. A phenomenal chaser and it was a privilege to have seen him race on so many occasions
I believe the official term for his 72 ride was 'knocked over' (a new one on me). You don't see him fall because I'm assuming just like in 73 he was ridden very gently, possibly not knowing if he'd stay, so he was towards the rear. In 74 and 75 he was far more handy.
@ Yes knocked over might be apt though I don’t think I have ever heard the expression

Imagine 74 races red rum had never fallen. His record at the Grand national. Will never be equalled 5 runs. 3 wins and 2 seconds
The day I got my first and only motorbike, my Uncle Mal got it for me as I wouldnt miss The Grand National
So unfair that weight disadvantage. 23 pounds was a horrendous handicap for any horse. Crisp deserved to win.
The camerawork at bechers first time was woeful. Switched cameras missing the head-on view, fall of Sebastian but thankfully captured the spectacular fall of Andy Pandy second time round.
In 73 Rummy went after the leader Crisp. Andy Pandy's John Burke was doing the same here I believe. After the water he decided to chase down Boomdocker but with that horse refusinig, it left Andy Pandy well clear. Burke was fuming as he felt his horse would have won if not succumbed at Bechers.
Andy Pandy seemed to take forever to fall. Reminded me of Uncle Merlin, in 1990.
The greatest 4 miler
Happy memories I am 72 Yr old and backed Rummy every national even when he won the Scottish national Trainer Ginger Macain was a superb trainer and you typical northerner like I said happy memories
Goosebumps every time ❤
Crisp was giving Red Rum 23 pounds away in weight, surely had the weights been Level, Crisp would have won it in a canter, the weight told in the end, people forget that
Boomdocker would've taken some catching if he hadn't refused. Andy Pandy was going well too.
👍 Was even further ahead than Crisp had been, at the start of the second circuit. I think Andy Pandy would have won it comfortably, had he not gone at second Beechers. He must have been 10 lengths clear, and cantering, when he fell. He seemed to take ages to fall, bit like Uncle Merlin, at the same fence, in 1990, when leading. (Think he won the Whitbread, a few weeks afterwards, too)...
I was born in 77 and i can remember this race and everyone in our living room going mad,my dad had 1st and 2nd that day.
I love the policeman’s respect to a legend as Red Rum passes the post. Whether he was supposed to or not, he applauded Rummy home.
The greatest moment in horse racing history, never to be beaten
A proper National....
The days when getting round was an achievement
no horse before or since could jump aintree like Red rum absolute the best of the best
Go Aldiniti Go 😭
I cry buckets every time I watch this what a horse and that race was hard in those days red rum an absolute legend a moment in sporting history
In 3 Nationals (leaving aside 1976) poor Spanish Steps was only behind 3 horses...Red Rum and Lescargot 3 times and Crisp once and seems all but forgotten as a GN hero. Any other era, apart from the compressed brush hurdle handicap it is now, would have won at least once. Cheltenham Festival winner too.
Charles Dickens beat him in 74 as well but yes a very good record.
Just loved L, escargot. So pleased he won this. Great memories.
Ha ha! That last comment just before the video ended... Some snail!
Beautiful days beautiful Britain! No Muslims! No immigrants!
No matter how many times I watch it......I still think Crisp is going to hold on LOL
One of the great stories of the Grand National and Liverpool
Love the grand nationals of the 70s 80s and 90s
Rembered as if it was last week. Sitting in Auntie Aileen's house in Putney, she picked Aldaniti as the winner. I presented self as superior judge of racing, my choice was Zongalero. Hey ho.
Red rum is the grand national i picked him to win my dad placed it my older brother picked andy pandy lol still get goosebumps listening to commentary never will be another rummy in my lifetime.
Brian fletcher always said his greatest achievement was winning the Scottish grand national and the English grand national in the same year when he still rode red rum .He then come in 3rd on eye catcher in the same race when Tommy won on red rum

Can anyone here tell me who that poor jockey was that went splat & one could hear it, he is wearing white & is lying face down after a jump in minute 3.50 seconds.
I've never understood this need to handicap horses races. RR had 10.5 stone in 1973 & 12 stone in 1975. It is just nutty & cruel. Red Rum was one of a kind & I am sure, was a pleasure to ride for any & all jockeys. RIP Red Ru,m you gave us all a great run for our money.
I am sorry to hear that. I hope you are happy & thriving
1981.
What a story, watched champions earlier today.
The only horse to be booked to open supermarkets. What a star!
