This is such a good scene. We know due to her earlier conversation with Shu Lian that Jiaolong despises her aristocrat life and the cards she's been dealt as a woman and that all she wants to do is live the life of a lawless martial artist, be free and do whatever she wants. Here she is in a heavily guarded caravan bored out of her mind and suddenly the caravan gets raided by desert bandits. So, she looks out the window to see the bandits who are living this exact life that she's been fantasizing about. Xiaohu notices that she's looking out of the cart and looks confused. You have to imagine how weird her behavior is. He's probably done this a hundred times and never seen a girl look out the window to see what's going on. You'd expect the girls to be hiding inside the cart, hoping the bandits don't notice she's there but she's actually looking out and showing her beautiful face. So, he rides up to her window and takes her comb. The comb is just a pretense to get a look at this ballsy girl. As the audience we also know here he's actually a good guy because he doesn't go inside the cart and try do anything to the women, he just takes the comb and winks at her. To Jiaolong on the other hand, she sees this as a challenge. Here comes this "MAN" who lives the life she wants and dares to challenge her (and we know from later scenes she has no love for the patriarchy). She makes it about the comb but the comb is also just a pretense to her. The comb is a justification for her to chase after him and have this adventure that she's been dreaming about. Conveniently, the mother fainted, so she goes out and decides to chase Xiaohu until she gets her comb back. I love the shot of Xiaohu's face when she comes out. His face is just like "what the fuck." This scene conveys so much without any dialogue about what's going on. It was already weird for the girl to look out the window, now she comes out of the cart, strangles a bandit to get his horse, grabs a weapon from a corpse and demands her comb back like she's invincible. He's never seen a girl like this before. I think at this point he's probably already enamored with her. So, he forgets about the raid and rides off to have her chase him and she actually does. Then she starts fighting him on horse back and it must become clear to him that she is an exceptional fighter. Obviously, in the main timeframe the movie is set in, she's already way stronger than him but in this flashback scene they're equal which you know because they fight each other until they collapse from dehydration neither one winning. But he gets her to fall off the horse and tells her to go back to the caravan, so she doesn't get lost. But she is determined to have her adventure and gets back on the horse. Then she finds the bandits who of course are first perplexed seeing a lone aristocrat girl come to them and assume she's an easy meal. But she just beats the shit out of these men like it's no problem. Xiaohu sees that and he must be amazed. Who is this girl that starts a fight with a pack of bandits and wins? So, he calls out to her to chase him again and they fight again until they collapse. In the next scene she's in the cave. A lot of people think for some reason that he kidnapped her but that's not the case. He brought her to the cave to nurse her, feed her, and give her water so they can continue their fight. He tells her as much. It's true that he later ties her up but that's because she beat him in the head with a rock when he had his guard down. He doesn't tie her up to kidnap her, he ties her up, so she won't kill him in his sleep so to say. I think it's during her time in the cave she also realizes that he is not like other men who want to silence her and subjugate her. I think the contrast becomes pretty clear later on in the movie when she snaps and proverbially fights the patriarchy in the restaurant. All the men she fights in the restaurant are shocked and offended that she dares to fight them and be disrespectful. Xiaohu isn't upset that she fights him. He thoroughly enjoys fighting her, he sees her as an equal and encourages her to do what she wants which is to fight him.

The combination of the width, hard chine and excellent design make it very stable. I learned to sail in lightning while also teaching my friends AND we loved to go out AFTER the small craft warning went up = over 16 knots. All the other big keel yachts would be heading in as we passed them on our way out to have the finest time of all. Centerboard sloops rock and the Lightning may be the best of the best! Milwaukee on Lake Michigan is a suddenly windy region with more shipwrecks than anyplace (Edmond Obrien) We never broached or came close as the boat's design was superior. You can see how steady it is in this video--this is strong wind in a 750 lb boat that is on top of the water = NO keel (150 lb steel centerboard) and she is tracking steady in waves with little correction of tiller needed = as fun as sailing gets :-)

So many memories. This boat will really take off under the right conditions. Used to sail on in the SF Bay many years ago. Also trailered up to Vancouver Island and motor sailed through many islands. What an adventure!
