Evolution 36 update 3
This is the 4th video in my series on the Evolution .36 stunt engine. This flight displays one of my re-timed Evolution .36s on my new profile. This plane was named, Toot'r, as it is a scratch built Tutor with a 50" wingspan and built-up tail feathers at 24% of the wing. I have been pleased with the engine rework and continue to play with props. This flight the engine is turning a 10.5 x 4.5 APC (10500 rpm at launch). Fuel is 10% nitro, 22% oil (half castor). Lot's of flight bobbles as this is only my 7th pattern with this new plane.

Evolution .36 Update 2
มุมมอง 8K10 ปีที่แล้ว
I have been working with the Evolution .36 C/L engine on and off for about 4 years, with limited success, but just enough to encourage me to swap a ST34 for a 2nd Evolution. This Summer I finally decided to check the cylinder port...

Wen Mac Plug Tests
มุมมอง 3.1K10 ปีที่แล้ว
Over a couple years, I purchased 8 Wen Mac Mk XII, Mk XIII and Testors/McCoy .049 engines from eBay suppliers and at swap meets. Many of the 'Rotomatic' starters were broken, plus the starters are all steel and add considerable weight to the engine. Given these factors I removed the starter assemblies and installed Cox thrust plates. These engines have been out of production for a long time, so...

Bill Smith's Wen Mac powered modified 'Firebaby'
มุมมอง 1.7K11 ปีที่แล้ว
Bill's modified 'Firebaby' powered by a Wen Mac Mk III. Bill shortened the front end to handle the extra weight from the Wen Mac rotomatic starter. The plane was built light as Bill wanted to be able to do basic stunts with the Wen Mac powering the plane. He also used a vintage Tornado presswood 6x3 prop. Fuel is SIG 25% Champion. Line length is 28 feet of 'spider wire'.
Evolution 36 Update
มุมมอง 2.2K11 ปีที่แล้ว
Further development of my Evolution .36. Modifications: 0.160" dia. true venturi with sprinkler; decompressed with 0.034" head shims; Merlin 2011 plug; 11x4 Tornado prop; 10-22 fuel. It probably could use a small tank adjustment to equalize the run. The engine is mounted side-winder on an ARF Primary Force. I need to do further testing with props, compression and mounted in a full-fuse airplane.

Aerotiger .36 on my Tucker Special. Not the greatest pattern, but I wanted to show how this well regarded stunt engine performs. There are no posted videos of Aeroproduct's engines so I thought this might be a worthwhile posting. BTW, the muffler is a tube style supplied by Randy Smith, with a rubber angled extension on the outlet. I want to increase the lap times a bit. I can try richening it ...

Pre-mixed diesel fuel is unavailable in the US, so I mix my own using JD starting fluid (80% ether). It worked in previous years. I’ll try a fresh mix next Summer. Again, thanks for the comments.

A very enjoyable demo. The PAW certainly runs sweetly. I could not afford one at a kid in the 60s. Bought a 2.5 BR version in 1980. It's never been run. Have just spent a little time reviewing availability of the ingredients for the diesel fuel. I've only just realised that PAW are still trading. It's maybe time to get my grandchildren into control line flying wing combat... At least they would have to hug each other instead of fighting :-)

Diethyl Ether is extremely hard to find in the US. I think there are a couple of fuel companies in the UK that still blend model diesel fuel. I don't know what the team race folks do, but most of us here use John Deere starting fluid. Kerosene and castor oil are fairly easy to obtain and cetane booter can be purchased at truck stops.

I have always liked airplanes. I got my first flying model airplane when I was about 10. It was a Carl Goldberg (I think) "Fire Baby" with a 0.49 engine, "U" control of course. Neither my dad nor I knew anything about gas models.. this was about 1957. So the hobby shop where we bought it in Monroe, Louisiana gave us the name of a kid who did and we went to his house and he helped us build it. It didn't take long since it was a "profile" model meaning the fuselage was 2 dimensional basically being a flat stick of balsa wood, the wings and tail were too. The kid showed us how to start and fly it and then my dad tried. It went UP and then DOWN. It survived the crash but it took a beating before I figured it out. It moved very fast and you got dizzy quickly. I took up model airplanes again in the 60's when I was in the Marine Corps and lived in San Diego. The local Navy base had a great hobby shop and you could buy kits for 2 dollars and engines (K&B .35's) for $7. I became fairly proficient at flying them. Then in the 80's I came back to the hobby but now it was radio controlled, and I built some nice BIG models, some from kits and some from plans and flew them for a few years. Now it's electric motors etc., etc. and everything costs a fortune but I'm not up to that anymore. I'm going on 75 and my Harley's and old Cushman motor scooters keep my busy.

All this is a conspiracy to make C/L flying the poor relation, I say. Why is it so hard to build a nice full-bodied stunt ship, and to take more pride in it....? PS.. The PAW 1.49Br is quite a potent little engine. That airplane was based on a plane designed for a 2.5cc glow. Unfortunately, we seem to have developed a love of profiles here in the U.S. (simplicity I guess). I have a PAW .8cc powered full-fuse stunter of my own design. The engine is not cowled however (fuse stopped at the firewall), but I thought I could form a cowl from aluminum. I fly mostly glows, but get the 'diesel bug' frequently'. Check out my PAW .19 powered Ringmaster (sorry another profile!): th-cam.com/video/egO-So_F8bY/w-d-xo.html

I've had a lot of paw motors in my time, great to use , but damn hard start in very cold weather. 🙄

I had a 2.5 and it started easily, I found the 1.5 could be a bit temperamental. Very powerful engines, I loved them.

Heres a tip for you, dont yank on your pully or thro time your pully will not crab the righ way, theres plastic grabers that will go out in time. Pull it slowly untile it grabs then pull start fast. It will save your pull start in the long run.

Why you gotta make Profile Models, ay...? They are cheap and they look cheap, however well they fly.
