Sea fortress/military harbour Liepāja
The north and south pier of the harbour were built at the end of the 19th century by the Russian Tsar Alexander III. At the time, the harbour was to be developed into the so-called ‘Liepāja Sea Fortress’.
The north breakwater is the longest breakwater in Latvia, 1.8 kilometres long and 7.35 metres wide. Nowadays it is often used by the town's inhabitants for fishing and watching the sunset. During storms, the view of the turbulent Baltic Sea with its high waves is magnificent.
The smaller southern pier, where we are taking our walk today, is 700 metres long and also protects the harbour of Liepāja. About half of the path on the pier is level and easy to walk on a concrete surface. The second half then leads over the large stone stacks and is only suitable for climbers.
