Deep Cabaret - Matchless
This gorgeous short film is inspired by Deep Cabaret's song Matchless and created exclusively for the Lawrence Batley Theatre by conceptual artist Adam York Gregory.
Deep Cabaret's unique sound celebrates jazz, improv, African, folk and left-field pop.
Out on January 10th, 2025. Pre-order the limited edition LP from Wrong Speed Records from Dec 6th:
deepcabaret.bandcamp.com/album/matchless-reissue
Incredible ‘lost’ album, merging British folk, deep drones, wild noise and the pulse of desert blues into a single, beautiful whole.
Produced by Justin Adams (Tinariwen, Robert Plant) and available on vinyl for the first time.
Formed in 2005 by bandleader and songwriter Steve Lewis, Deep Cabaret is a group of forward-thinking, instinctive musicians using sound and language to explore what it means to be human.
In 2019, Arts Council England granted Lewis funding to make an album. This afforded Deep Cabaret the type of luxurious budget normally unimaginable to DIY bands. They hired Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios and chose Justin Adams as producer, tapping into his deep expertise in North and West African music.
The resulting Matchless is aptly named. There is a calm assurance about the album that is rare. Influences are absorbed, interpreted and fed back in a way that feels natural and inviting. Hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, clarinet, cello and throat singing (as well as more traditional rock and pop instrumentation) all feature. It is remarkable (and testament to the skills of the ensemble) that these powerful tonal elements can co-exist so beautifully.
Lewis’ vocal is the glue that holds Matchless together. He sings in a voice entirely his own, free of rock and roll artifice or affectation, disarming the listener and drawing them in.
Lewis’ lyrics are equally intriguing - adapted from contemporary writers like Jonathan Safran Foer, Mary Oliver and Marilynne Robinson and icons like William Blake, Carl Jung and Wassily Kandinsky and their experiences of being human. Sometimes these words are used in their original form and recontextualised as song, sometimes they’re ‘remixed’ and reimagined as required.
The results are as though the deep trance of Ali Farka Toure has been magically transplanted to the mudflats of Morecambe Bay, reimagined through the lens of traditional British folk music and shot through with a European gothic sensibility. A tool for meditation and contemplation. A remarkable record.
Originally self-released on CD, Matchless is now finally available on vinyl for the first time thanks to Wrong Speed Records. Perhaps best known for loud, wild rock music (Part Chimp, Hey Colossus etc), there is nonetheless a common thread through the label of music made by “lifers” - people on an eternal creative quest.
2024 saw Steve Lewis celebrate his 70th birthday. Somehow “lifer” doesn’t quite do justice to his decades of creativity, but it feels serendipitous that this charming, eccentric and romantic album has found a second life and a new and welcoming home.
“It’s quite rare to find a group of musicians who have committed to finding together their own path, raw, personal, human and emotive, not relying on cliche or shallow ideas of what ‘good musicianship’ might be - so I was happy to find myself working with Deep Cabaret” - Justin Adams
Matchless is released on limited-edition LP and DL on January 10th 2025. 200 copies on vinyl only. Available through Cargo Distribution.

Clips from the making of "Ghosts" by HARESS, Erbistock Mill, Wales, January 2020. Originally released in 2022, “Ghosts” met with deserved critical acclaim. We don’t go genres at Wrong Speed but it’s fair to say it’s become recognised as an essential record in what might be loosely termed (by others) “New Weird Britain” - that deliberately blurry middle ground of underground UK music where the e...

This one really brought back the fond ones…
couldn't find the lyrics anywhere on the internet so I made a quick attempt at transcribing it myself. Feel free to suggest edits if you think i heard smthn wrong (probably did) Is this reason what you wanted to know? __ called to you and it's your time to go Looking good in your big black suit(?) Come and join us now, we're down in the woods Your skin's so pale, you're fading away Are you breathing, are you trying to say I tried to force you, and it did no good Now it's over we're asleep in the woods Don't even know where is my soul We're gonna rot away, mutation And I wanted to see your human eyes Now you wanted to know where is my soul What I told you will you know what to say? Just another little loop in the chain I should have told you but I left it unsaid. Come and find me now I'm back from the dead
Marc Riley made me do it.
❤
Amazing
EPIC POGGERS VID
this record is great!!!
Never knew that Dennis Rader played with a screamo band back in the day.
Kind of, you know, kind of, like, you know, just like literally kind of you know.
Mental spastik🤩
Listening on 0.25 speed and it's mighty fine
What a likeable chap. I remember him from Maker days, think he had a reputation as a bit of a ligger. It does have to be said that if you scanned the Maker from about 88-91 for Canon Records both contemporary and older, that would basically be Gullick’s collection. Enjoyed the binman anecdote. Every photo shoot needs a passing binman to deflate the egos of the band being photographed.
Think I’ll take The Jesus Lizard over Lionel Richie and Stormzy. Probably not saying much though. I’d take Black Lace over Stormzy.
I wouldn’t consider Pure by Godflesh to be the second album, it’s their third really. Their first self-titled is an LP, 33 1/3, over half an hour of music. That’s not an EP, despite what Wikipedia says. You didn’t pick up that they’re actually a duo. Broadrick is the most talented English musician of the last thirty odd years.
24:40 “I still look at a record and go - How does the music come out?” I still wonder this. Doesn’t matter how much I understand about the physics of the matter. Records of orchestral music: how can they fit so many instruments into that thin line of vinyl? A very charming fellow!
At least a little comedy was injected into the conversation when he started droning on about Burzum. Always revealing when the key (and only) complaint about Varg is that he’s a racist. Rather than the fact that he actually killed someone.
Lovely anecdotes about lovely Whitehouse. I had a quite similar epiphany to Luke when I first heard Whitehouse in 1992, which was listening to their Another Crack of the White Whip compilation that my best friend had leant me. I still remember having the CD on my desk at work after she gave it to me, looking at the artwork and song titles and wondering what the hell it could sound like. I had only really heard noisy rock music before that, so they were a complete revelation. The most thrilling music I had ever heard. I loved it immediately, despite it being such an alien sound and concept. It opened up whole worlds and musical scenes that were shunned by the music weeklies of the 80s into early 90s. And once you discover those beautiful, harsh industrial sounds, everything else seems like second best. “Try And Be Grateful” … I was and am.
Just floating along, maybe above a desert. Maybe at sunset. Just floating.

What a beautiful record.
Excellent
Rust in Peace is a killer album, have it on tape and its been one of my favorite metal albums for almost 30 years. Think its better than early Metallica, only that one though. Youthanasia kinda sucks though. I kinda don't want to talk to "metal" fans who don't love the record, good on you Aaron but the controversy is just dumb.
I was about to say that it was a pain in the ass, but he beat me to it! Only been there a few times, for a reason. Cool place though would be great if you literally never went anywhere.
