    A former fire apparatus no doubt. Red, chrome and diamond tread everywhere. Very clean interior. Chrome moon caps on red wheels. That’s what this was.

    I know you CAN start it with the start warning buzzing. Does that go off if you have the ignition BUT DON’T TURN IT OVER or is it for the longer startup process and is in conjunction with the typical glow light process?

    • @wdixon27
      @wdixon27 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      low air pressure warning, usually below 60psi in the brake system the warning comes on so you can get it stopped while you can (have a choice) detroit's don't have glow plugs

    Love them old Detroits. My favorite was the single axle White 9000 that was assigned to me. Loud, no A/C, no air ride seat, no power steering… But she was a beast.

    I remember that distinct engine sound from when I was a child in the early 80's. I live just a couple of miles from the Lakewood General Motors plant which used these trucks moving cars out on trailers.

    I was used to a Mack. Slow revving, slow shifting truck. Next job, I got in a GMC with a 318 Detroit, with a 13spd. Was having a hard time shifting. I asked an older guy, what's the trick? He said; First thing in the morning, slam your hand in the door, and stay mad at it all day! It worked!

    That doesn't look like a Brigadier; they had a square nose with single headlights on the fenders. The General had dual headlights on the fender if I remember right. That looks like a 9500. I drove a '73 9500 with a 238 Detroit and a 13 speed and at 73,000 lbs. you needed every gear! In 1980 they raised the weight limit to 80,000 lbs. and the 238 was too small.

    A Detroit Diesel (8v71 for example) turning 2,100 will sound like it's turning 4,200 but it's not. The piston speed and crankshaft speed is the same as a 4 stroke turning 2,100

    • @Romans--bo7br
      @Romans--bo7br 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      1SixpenceFan..... Crankshaft speed (rpm) would be the same at whatever comparative rpm...... but, unless the stroke of both engines is the same... Piston speed (fps) would be completely different. Piston speed is directly related to stroke travel.. in Any reciprocating engine, Not crankshaft speed.

    Good one. In 1983 i drove a GMC General; it had 430 silver detroit. One time, i was leaving from a stop sign, with an A-train load of crude oil. Raining out, and when i released the clutch, drive tires spun, before moving. I am still amazed. Thank-you, sir, for not showing modern computerized plastic garbage, sold and driven as ' trucks '
