As You Love Yourself
Sometimes we pass over the "as yourself" part of Jesus' essentials. But the revolutionary good news Jesus shared is the message that we are loved by a God who says "You are my beloved child, in whom I am well pleased". At the end of Jesus' ministry, he rephrases the essentials into one new vision of our life with God and each other and it begins with the simple fact that we, ourselves, are loved. Our journey is to learn to love ourselves as God does and let that love overflow into our world.

The Essentials - Love God
มุมมอง 3319 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
It may seem like Jesus skipped over the "Love God" part, but the very next story quietly gives us one vision of what it looks like to Love God: simply being ourselves with God. In the story of Mary and Martha, Jesus balances the "doing" of loving our neighbor with the "being" of loving God.
The Essentials: Love at the Center of Everything
มุมมอง 5114 วันที่ผ่านมา
To paraphrase a certain musical nun, starting with the essentials is a very good place to start. Jesus said the essentials are simple, but profound: Love God, Love neighbor, as we Love ourselves. Everything hangs on these three things. When we understand what Jesus said is essential - Love above all - it revolutionizes our understanding of faith, practice, and purpose. Let's start our journey t...
The Essentials: Love Your Neighbor
มุมมอง 1714 วันที่ผ่านมา
Jesus starts his explanation of Love in a very practical place: love in action, for others. But those who listened had all the questions we do: who? how far? how long? Jesus answered with a vision of the infinite love of God: everyone, always, as long as it takes. Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan flips the script and shows a wider vision of love than seems possible. But like the Samaritan, ...

Holy means set apart, I am surprised that a man ( of the cloth ) wearing religious clothing speaks about these things and does not know what words mean

My mom says that she loves me, but I found out that she allowed for and agreed with slavery back in the day... she asked if I still love her, and I said no I can't, and then she lit me on fire. Does that mean she truly loves me? My God says that he loves me, but I found out that he allowed for and agreed with slavery back in the day... he asked if I still love him, and I said no I can't, and then he lit me on fire for eternity. Does that mean he truly loves me? Does this make any sense at all for a loving God to not only allow for slavery under certain criteria, and claim to love but is clearly abusive? Gods word or bronze age immoral mens word?

You were made to help man. Man was made in His image, and woman for man. You teach without a veil, so you cannot see. "He has given his people a strong leader, someone praiseworthy for his faithful ones, for the people of Israel, the people who are close to him."

In Sunday's service, I preached on faith and work. T oday, I read this quote from author Roxane Gay, in a podcast with Brene Brown: “I hope to spend time doing more creating and less time on the hamster wheel of maintaining visibility.” Ya'll, I'm sorry. That sermon could have been much shorter had I just used this quote. All that to ask these questions: How does your work interact with your faith? What IS your work? The word 'work' can be deceiving, especially if we limit that work to a paying job. Answer the questions from Barbara Taylor Bradford, "What brings you joy? How do you spend your days?" Help me with this phrase: employment ministry. What does that mean to you? If we were to explore such a ministry at Arapaho, what do you imagine that ministry to look like? You can contact me at cathy@arapahoumc.org .

2 Peter about false teachers: “These people are as useless as dried-up springs or as mist blown away by the wind. They are doomed to blackest darkness. They brag about themselves with empty, foolish boasting. With an appeal to twisted sexual desires, they lure back into sin those who have barely escaped from a lifestyle of deception. They promise freedom, but they themselves are slaves of sin and corruption. For you are a slave to whatever controls you. And when people escape from the wickedness of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and then get tangled up and enslaved by sin again, they are worse off than before. It would be better if they had never known the way to righteousness than to know it and then reject the command they were given to live a holy life. They prove the truth of this proverb: “A dog returns to its vomit.” And another says, “A washed pig returns to the mud.”” ‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭2:17-22‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Questions for reflection and comments: 1) Pastor Scott mentions two paths that churches often follow: some are protective and defensive, others lean into disruptions (bringing open minds, hearts, and hands to continue our faith journey). In what ways would you like to contribute to leaning into disruptions? How will that help others understand a God of love and justice? 2) What did you think or feel when Pastor Scott asked you to consider that some people are tired of the 'usual' church experience? What do you feel that God is calling you toward to help address that experience? What does that mean to those who do not call 'church' home? 3) Reflect on the email from a visiting couple that stated, "If we were to ever feel safe attending a church, it would be yours [Arapaho UMC]." How does being a loving follower of Christ model a safe environment? 4) Agape love - God-sized love. How will you show that agape love this week? 5) Reflect on this closing thought: This is our prayer: that our love might become even more and more rich with knowledge and all kinds of insight. We pray this so that we will be able to decide what really matters and so we will be sincere and blameless on the day of Christ. We pray that we will then be filled with the fruit of righteousness, which comes from Jesus Christ, in order to give glory and praise to God.

Other thoughts for reflection: Read the scripture passage - Matthew 7:15-20 1. "A tree gives glory God by bring a tree." (Thomas Merton). How does this quote intersect with the message of bearing good fruit? 2. "Actions can reveal the state of our faith." (Pastor Scott). What actions best express your faith? How might your actions change as that faith grows? 3. Poieo - Greek for "to do," in the present and future tense, as in now and ongoing. What is yours to do? How will that action make a difference in the world? 4. Read Martin Luther King Jr.'s "Letter from a Birmingham Jail." Select one or two paragraphs and reflect on it, maybe write about it in a journal. How does King's letter encourage us to "look closer, not away?"

Some questions for reflection from Pastor Scott's message today: Read Matthew 3: 13-17 (The Baptism of Jesus) Here are some points and questions for reflection. Feel free to add comments for discussion in this forum as you reflect on these questions. 1. "Baptism is not still waters that grant us rest. It is God's current in which we get caught." What does this say about an active spiritual life or the movement of the Holy Spirit in your life? Are you currently in water at rest, or in living water? 2. Read Amos 5:24. You migh associate this with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who quoted this in his preaching often. What does it mean for justice to roll down, and for righteousness to be an ever-flowing stream? How are you allowing God to work through you to bring this about in our world? 3. What does heaven on earth look like? What does the work look like to bring that closer to a reality for all peoples? 4. Three questions are asked in the United Methodist Church Service of Reaffirmation of Baptismal Covenant. How do you incorporate your answers to these questions into your spiritual journey? 1) Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of this world, and repent of your sin? 2) Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves? 3) Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as your Lord, in union with the Church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races? 5. Finally, read Matthew 28:19-20. How are you embodying the Great Commission?

When we know we belong to God, we embrace the winding path of discovery, we accept the uncontainable nature of God’s presence and hope, and we receive the truth that we’re beloved and that’s enough.

I was already prepared to welcome Scott into our AUMC community--already prepared to embrace his ministry among us, and this interview reinforced my belief that he is going to be an awesome fit for our congregation.
