Boats & stuff 10 - under your boat
มุมมอง 353 ปีที่แล้ว
Here in Sweden it does not look like there is much happening beneeth the surface. I was sitting on shore, just one meter from where I had mored my boat and filmed this by sticking down the camera under the surface. Not as colourful as in the tropics, but quite beautiful and interesting life forms never the less. #boat #underwater #Sweden #sailing
Boats & stuff 9 - launching the dingy
มุมมอง 1883 ปีที่แล้ว
Early morning, before leaving the anchorage, I launch the dingy for a short row (excellent excercise before breakfast) and also takes the opportuniy to get rip of trash and cans from the boat. Because of the davits on my boat were built before the boat was extended, I have added a small arm on port that pushes the dingy past the rear anchor. I was only planning to show the launching, but with s...
Boats & stuff 8 - sliding knot
มุมมอง 423 ปีที่แล้ว
When you need to change the length of a line there are several options. Here I will show a really simple knot that does the trick. Works well on most ropes, except really smooth and slippery ones (like typical lanyards and halyards). Do you have a tent, you probably have the small pieces of plastic on your lines to adjust the length, you can replce them with this knot instead... simpler, more e...
Boats & Stuff [07] - Thunder at midsummer

Just a short film from midsummer. I was hit by several thunderstorms with lots of wind, rain and lightning, but between them the night was beautiful. This is a well protected achorage, only really high winds from the north could be an issue. #boat #sailboat #sailing #achorage #lightning #storm

Boats & stuff [04] - lubricating propeller shaft seal
มุมมอง 1.6K5 ปีที่แล้ว
Before going back in the water, the seal should be lubricated. The seal sits around the propeller shaft so that sea water will not flood the boat. I have a seal from Volvo, called black jack. It is a very simple seal, sonsisting only of rubber. It does not provide a perfecr seal, some water will leak, but it is a super simple seal that does its job well. The only maintenance needed, it to put s...
Boats & stuff [03] - Polishing the propeller
มุมมอง 15K5 ปีที่แล้ว
The bronze propeller gets a litle corroded after a season, even in the baltic sea. Polishing it makes it look much nicer, and probably improves the performance a bit as well. Using a high speed polishing disk, it is a quick job. I do not bother to polish the hub. This propeller is probably the same age as the engine = 40 years. Note it is a left oriented propeller, in this case indicating an ol...
Boats & stuff [01 f] : The end of the line - end splice
มุมมอง 65 ปีที่แล้ว
The most robust end of a line is the end splice. It will last the lifetime of the rope, and will make it look nice. The disadvantages is it makes the rope a bit wider at the end, it uses up some of the rope to make the splice, and it is probably the method that takes the longest to apply.
Boats & stuff [01 e] : The end of the line - walker's knot
มุมมอง 85 ปีที่แล้ว
A fantastic way to end a rope is using the walker's knot. The main advantage is you need no tools whatsoever, not even tape or string. This means this is a knot you can use to immediately sort out a rope that has gone bad. The two disadvantages are: It makes the end a bit wider, and the rope will end up shorter as you need to use some of the rope to be able to tie the knot. It is a permananent ...
Boats & stuff [01 d] : The end of the line - sewn whipping
มุมมอง 155 ปีที่แล้ว
The sewn whipping can be made shorter than the basic whipping, but is still even stronger. It takes longer to make, and require some kind of needle, but it is not difficult. However for most people, the basic whipping will be enough, and you do not need to go and get any tools.
Boats & stuff [01 c] : The end of the line - basic whipping
มุมมอง 145 ปีที่แล้ว
A whipping is a nice looking, robust and traditional end to a rope. It is not difficult, and takes only a minute or two to make, so there is really no reason not to have a nice whipping at the end of your line.
Boats & stuff [01 b] : The end of the line - heat shrink tubing
มุมมอง 505 ปีที่แล้ว
An easy way of terminating a rope, using heat shrink tubing. Not the best looking, not very traditional, but something anyone can do with good results. Also look at my other videos for other methods of ending the lines. And please subscribe for more videos on boating and sailing.

    this is strictly speaking not polishing. it's grinding. I use a red sanding pad to clean. then I use a dedicated metal polish bar and a drill. autosol also works great. but for a mirror-gloss surface, metal polish is the best🛥

    I use a non ferrous wire wheel on a corded drill. Sometimes a nylon abrasive wheel. (No scratches) then polish with a drill buffer wheel and compound. NEVER a grinder.

    Thank for the video man, it's a job i have to do. Can i ask when do you have to replace the stuffing box (hours ? years ? symptoms?) ?

    • @petera9757
      @petera9757 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lubrication is each year or if it starts to be noisy. Replacing the seal (volvo black jack) I am not sure, but I have not replaced it yet, had the boat for eight years. I have been thinking on replacing it, and will plan to do it for next season. Feels a bit scary to disconnect the shaft from the engine, and I assume it will be a struggle. And as always in boats, almost impossible to reach. I will try to temember to get hold of a new one, and of course record the replacement

    • @boardelia
      @boardelia ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petera9757 I've read that you have to squeeze it to take the air out when you send the boat back to water. So if it's rock hard and can not be squeezed, it's time to replace. So i will buy one just in case and when the boat goes back to water we'll see... Guess what volvo stopped the production of the reference i look for (828416) i'll have to see which reference replaces it ! I've seen some videos on how to disconnect and replace the gland, it doesn't look hard but the access is another subject and every boat job lolokks easy and is finally a struggle lol

      @petera9757 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boardelia yes venting out the air, or rather filling the tunnel with water is essential both from lubrication and cooling perspective. I have never had any problems with that. I think what happens when it gets old it starts to leak more. Since I still have not built any bilgepump meter to keep track of the running time, I do not really know how much, but gut feel is it is not much. And still drip free at idle.

      @@boardeliayes. The squeezing before going back into water is called burping. If the stuffing box is hard, it needs replacing.

    That might work on a sail boat where the props spin at low RPM's but I would be concerned you will make them out of balance if used on a power boat without balancing them prior to use.

    • @petera9757
      @petera9757 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The corrosion and biology will of course also cause inbalance, but I agree that on a powerboat you might not use a 43-year old propeller.

    • @Mikeandlucy1
      @Mikeandlucy1 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@petera9757 Of course if you were planning to set a new World Water Speed record in you 40+ year old boat, I'm sure you would have taken the time to check how many microns thick each blade was, how many grams you had removed and making sure you did not alter the profile of each blade in any way. I'm also convinced you would have made sure that any sanding marks all ran in exactly the same direction so as to guarantee the prop gave a perfectly symmetrical amount of propulsion with each revolution. However, I suspect you thought ' hmmmm, Jim's talking bollocks, its a 40 year old boat, not really built to race against a jet boat, also the prop is covered in sea life and is probably as much out of balance already as a sailor after a night ashore and two bottles of jack Daniels, I doubt it would make even the tiniest of a difference if I use a polishing disc on it, so heck that's what I will do'. However, I strongly recommend you take Jim's advice and any planned high speed stuff, you make sure that prop is as finely tuned as is humanly possible.

    • @Mikeandlucy1
      @Mikeandlucy1 ปีที่แล้ว

      IDIOT, you think he doesn't know that, its not a power boat its a sail boat so why even raise the issue. I have however given Petera9757 some useful advice and suggested he take on board your knowledgeable comments.

    • @petera9757
      @petera9757 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Mikeandlucy1 Yes, I do this mainly for fuel economy not speed. And even if I am only polishing, I am of course removing the corroded material so the blades continously get thinner. I would argue that the corroded but non polished blades would have the same or at least very similar history. It is absolutely getting close to replacing the propeller, which I am sure will be a nightmare as I do not know if it has ever been taken off. Big puller and lots of heat will be needed I am sure, but I dare not try without having a new propeller ready.

    Hello Peter A, great video thank you for showing me the knot, looks like it would come in handy in some situations, keep up the good work! I have just started making knot videos too, mind if I demo this one? thanks

    • @petera9757
      @petera9757 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Please share the knowledge, I have not invented the knot. Even knots I have come up with myself, I assume already exist :-) Of course I appreciate a link to my video, it will also provide people with alternative views of it making it easier to understand. This knot is still a bit magic to me, so simple, and extremely useful for adjusting the length of things. Very environmental friendly if we for instance could get rid of those small pieces of plastics on the lines of tents.

    Måste man fråga om lov från hyresvärden, om man borrar i grannens balkong?

    • @petera9757
      @petera9757 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jag använde inte kraftigare saker än om man skulle monterat en lampa eller större tavla så jag frågade inte. Men det är ju viktigt att inte borra för nära kanter och hörn så klart. Fråga är säkert bra, men stor risk man hamnar hos någon som inte kan eller vet och får ett nej för det är enklast. Men oavsett så blir du ju ansvarig för det du gör.

      Thanks. One of those basic things that seams forgotten by so many. We do not need special equipment for everything, sometimes a knot will do it (there are several examples where knots actually is better than special components in many occasions, not to mention they are more environmental friendly, and you always have them at hand) :-)

    • @petera9757
      @petera9757 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not know the brand, there was only one type of polishing disks at the store. This was a 115 mm disk, and there were mainly two types: the grinding ones, which has like laminated sand paper (do not use these, they will grind away the metal), and then they had the polishing type I used, which instead has pads, a bit soft, like the scotch brite pads. I doubt we have the same brands here in Sweden anyway, but if you ask for something to polish metal you should find the right thing. It had three levels of roughness as well I think, I believe I used the medium one. I have also used it on stainless, after having cut and grind it, to polish it up to perfect shine.

      Glad to be of help. Yes, it does not take many minutes to do. For many years I did not use an anode, but used the propeller to protect the engine, so it corroded quite a lot each year, so polishing was essential. Now I use an anode, but I still polish it. The fixed propeller I have is not very expensive (although a bit hard to find as it is counter clockwise) so not so worried I might be wearing it down. But with the polishing disk, I am not really takin any metal off.
