Human Desires vs. God's Desires Scripture acknowledges that human desires are not inherently evil; rather, their moral value depends on their orientation. When desires are self-centered, they can lead individuals away from God's intentions. Conversely, God-centered desires align with His will and purpose. Psalm 37:4 encourages believers to "delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart," suggesting that aligning one's joy with God leads to fulfilled desires. However, Jeremiah 17:9 warns, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" This highlights the potential for human desires to be misguided when not aligned with God's will. Human Will vs. God's Will The Bible presents God's will as sovereign and ultimately prevailing, yet it also acknowledges human free will. Romans 8:7 states, "The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so." This indicates that human will, when influenced by sinful nature, resists God's will. Nevertheless, believers are encouraged to seek transformation and alignment with God's will. Romans 12:2 advises, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will." This transformation involves submitting personal desires to God's guidance. Reconciling Human and Divine Will The process of aligning human will with God's involves spiritual growth and discernment. Philippians 2:13 explains, "for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose." This suggests that God actively aids believers in conforming their will to His. Additionally, Jesus serves as the ultimate example of submission to God's will, especially evident in His prayer at Gethsemane: "Yet not my will, but yours be done" (Luke 22:42). This exemplifies the call for believers to prioritize God's will over their own. In summary, the Bible teaches that while human desires and will are significant, they are ideally to be aligned with God's desires and will. This alignment leads to spiritual fulfillment and the accomplishment of God's purposes in one's life.
