Im not sure if it was a malfunction, but maybe if he was turning on purpose, then that mightve introduce the drag and slow down the aircraft after he hit mach 1. probobly holding him there long enough as everyone else is saying. kapoof. pretty sad a small mistake like this can happen

No. He went the speed of sound, and some sort of malfunction occurred. It could have been a failure on the aircraft, or him spending too much time at Mach 1.

First of all, he had a catastrophic engine failure that took the aircraft out, it happens some times when the burner can fails. This was not due to him banking. The F-14 was quite capable of turning above Mach 1. Not something the crew want's to make a habit of since the g's multiply pretty quick. In an answer to other comments regarding the swing wing design of the F-111 Ardvark, B-1 Lancer and the F-14. The Tomcat"s swing wing used a Titanium wing box and was nothing like other swing wings. It could maneuver at 7+ g's. The 111 and B1 can't and didn't reach that level of stress.
Exactly, F-14s were maintenance hogs to say the least when they were good, they were absolute bad asses, but when they were bad,this is what happens, Still a very bad assed and lethal fighter in the hands of a capable pilot.

that effect is not breaking mach 1. its just a shock cone. and to flex... mach 1 at low altitude is easily possible. myth busters did it in one of their shows.. so its not "any pilot with an iq"... dumbass.
