Any chance you could list the parts you used, like the Shims? What would need to be done for the standard polymer stock at the for-end where it mates with the flange?
@Jajroofing24 Good evening. We'll, my Gunsmith, own a few of the scout m1a's. I did email him and check mine over to see if that's the problem. He loves figuring out stuff like this and getting onto the manufacturer on not picking up the issue. It seems like this is an issue on the socom 16 models. I sent him your video to watch and look over. Let's see what he can find out.
Too bad you just didn’t do it right and shim the gas block like the rest of us! Everyone knows Springfield armory doesn’t know what a spec is. That’s why I don’t buy Springfield, buy BULA or LRB. I guess it just depends where you want to start. How’d your crown job turn out?
Swimming the gas block is for timing the brake, not what the problem was the muzzle and brake did not mate end result was a very small turbulent chamber affecting accuracy. This is a 1/2 moa gun at all distances up to 500 yards, my ranges max distance. The crown turned out to be a hugely beneficial item.
@@Jajroofing24 I just picked up BULA Defence DMR M-21 and I’m very happy with the way it shoots. Broke the barrel in on Saturday and using Federal 168 gr Tac was getting 1/2” inches at 100 yards benched. Ran it out to 300 and was spot on. Do you run yours scoped or irons? The BULA I’m running has a 19 1/4” barrel on it and I’m thinking that it might just outshoot my LRB with a 22” on it. Did you replace your op rod guide by chance? Those Sadlak op rods are worth their weight in gold and really settle the op rod down. Was wondering how your crown job turned out! Does Springy use a chrome lined barrel on the Socom? I wasn’t sure and that’s why I asked. My brother has a Socom and he loves it, kinda why I bought the 19 1/2”er. Mine comes with an integrated Pic rail bridging the receiver and I’m trying one of the Arken Optics Killbox 1X8-34 on it, so far so good for a Chinese wannabe. Going to go to McMillan stocks on Monday and see about a fiberglass stock for it, not necessary but what the hell. My wood stock is showing a bit of light under the heel and I’d rather bed a fiberglass stock than cut the wood up on the walnut stock just to bed it.
Shims will help the timing of the break, but you will never get the muzzle and the brake to make contact. Delta P has a direct thread adapter now that eliminates the machine work but they are about $260
Man I was pretty upset grouping my m1a tanker. The groups are hideous . Awesome video and maybe someday I can have my break and barrel worked on! Amazing video again!
@@Jajroofing24 Not M1A, M1A SOCOM 16. I was told per the factory 168 max on my M1A loaded. 150 max on my M1A SOCOM 16. Not to avoid catastrophic failure but to prolong the life of the rifles. Take it for what its worth or check with Springfield.
You are all scaring the heck out of me, i paid 2 grands for a brand new one off gunbrokers, and i have not shot the blaming thing yet. so you all say if i cannot get a good grouping at 25 yards, i should send it to Springfield for adjustment of the gas tube ?? i am afraid to take down that gas tube and i wont be able to put it back together. i heard it requires special tools and all the youtube videos i watched advised against fiddling with the gas tube
Hey John, got an m1a socom my break looks different than the one in the video but I shoot groups just a little better than an ak at 100 yards. I though it was me or the scope. 3 scopes later I can't get a group smaller than 6 inches at 100 yrds.
Well shit! Mine just got sent back and is brand new. At 25 yards I couldn’t even get a zero using a scope. Damn inconsistent shots driving me in circles and after 100+ rounds I gave up. I’m going to have to find a local gun smith to bring this to or something. What are you using to remove material? Are you a machinist?
Most gun smith's don't understand the Socom 16. I have done a bakers dozen for others and I do the same thing every time and they will shoot sub moa with a good trigger man behind it.
@@Jajroofing24 sounds good man. I’m a uspsa shooter and know what I’m doing but this thing drove me nuts. It’s at Springfield now so I will see what happens and then go from there. Are you an FFL? The issue may be not being able to even send you a gun if you aren’t an FFL.
@@Jajroofing24 I am sure you figured this issue out. When I pull the comp and gas block I can tighten it by hand back further than it aligns. This means I have to back it off to align and certainly there must be a gap as you mentioned. I should mention I didn’t try 168 grain because they are hard to find right now. But 147 grains in 2 different brands I did try. At 25 freaking yards I can’t get a 4 inch group so I know it has to be the gun. If this socom shot 2-3 inches at 100 with a variety of ammo I would be happy.
Mr. Baumann, I would like advice on this (m1a socom) rifle. I have one on layaway and many folks are saying it was a bad idea. But I have had a very good experience with the standard model up to 300 yds and that was without any adjustments, aftermarket parts, or optics. Would you share your knowledge with me so I can achieve the same thing you have?
I must’ve got lucky cause my m1a scout is a lazer. Hitting at 500 yards iron sights baby. Only attachment I have is a sling. It did however take twenty rounds to break in before it started ejecting the round properly
Glad you fixed your issue. I don't have the equipment to do the same. Angry with _Bring Enough Cash_ Springfield. Anyone want to buy a lightly used Socom 16 ???
Thank you for showcasing the biggest issue with this rifle. I bought mine second hand and it was not shimmed/adjusted properly. I didn't know that you needed to do that for it to function properly and couldn't figure out what was wrong with the poor thing, but now I know everything about the rifle. That being said, I am getting some shims, but to fix the issue you fixed by removing material, wouldn't it be ok to make a precise washer to fill that gap, rather than trim everything?
I’m working on mine, have an adjustable gas plug and threaded adapter for asr brake. I need to remove material just like you did, when it’s not all the way right everything is concentric. Once it’s tight it will strike the end cap.
When the rifle was designed it had a wood stock that was intended for combat. The barrel tension coming out of the factory is to allow the stock to expand under certain conditions.
I want to buy a M1a very badly but I have just heard horror stories about them being not nearly as accurate as they were rumored to be, I am no gunsmith , I am a novice at best, I can not afford to spend the money on a M1A only to have to sink more money into it to make it accurate, so disappointing what Springfield has let happen to this rifle.
Any chance you could list the parts you used, like the Shims? What would need to be done for the standard polymer stock at the for-end where it mates with the flange?
Can i send you my rifle to tune 😊
That isn't a problem
Amazing results! I'd love to have mine tuned like this.
its only $$$
Nice video. I guess im going to have to get with my gunsmith on this and have him look over mine. My shot groups are the same way with my socom 16
Most won't touch them

Do you do this type of repair service if so how can I get intouch with you to have this repair
To figure out how much to take off the gas port and the Piston did you just make the first part before and after you timed it?

Will Quick Loads work with pistols?
Absolutely 😅
Could u have just install shims to to get proper fit instead of machining off material?

Well Done John. What is the turn around time for something like this. (I live in New England area ) Thanks !
Turn around time is typically 14 days
I might need this done to mine? What state are you in?
I am in Atlanta Ga, where are you located?
Wow. That fit is flawless.
At what yardage were those groups shot ??
100 yards
On the SOCOM 16 you shouldn’t be shooting 168s. Per the factory nothing over 150s was what they told me.
The ammunition used to test fire the m1a is FGMM 168gr. The M1A is not restricted to 150gr bullets and under.

SEI addresses this in a few ways additionally with a unitized gas system......

Good stuff. Gas valve lockup is crucial for every M1a/M14
What distance were you shooting at? How did it perform (factory) at 300yds and closer?
How many yards were you shooting?
That's 100yds it shoots sub(1/2)moa groups at 500
John, did you show your findings to the company? I know this has been a common complaint.
It's a service rifle designed for minute of man, and that is within their spec. Pointless
The real question is, is it legal in California?
You would need to modify the factory gas lock, I believe not a CA resident
