Making a Chess Board With No Table Saw, Planer, or Jointer
Made from rough-cut black walnut and hard maple. Because any error gets compounded, getting the components to the precise measurements with hand tools is tedious (but a labor of love). For this reason, some steps towards the end were not filmed. Apologies 🙏🏻.

Should have cleaned the glue with a warm water wash rag right when you clamped the board together, than you wouldn’t have had to scrape the dried glue and discolored it?
Glad to see more wood working in my feed!
Nicely done!
Any cons to using a table saw instead of band saw? Also whyd you choose to make the second set of cuts on the miter saw instead of the band saw again?
Dude, use a pushing stick 🫣 i do like your approach here. Its all manual work, which is just more enjoyable, and the result 👌👌 also, the sound of the storm outside make it magical 👍
So, what's the basic idea?
Maticulous dimensioning of everything and lots and lots of hand planing
Just a very nice miter saw and a band saw lol
Nice board, but i personally id add more finish, if ur using oil, its very difficult to apply too much really, if its poly, still, add more, it may feel smooth but i believe you could really make the wood pop. Good job nonetheless
Very nice work 💯👌
This turned out awesome, I love it! I really like the edge banding you put around the board itself before attaching the walnut surround.
is that not a planer right at the very beginning?
Nope. It’s a bandsaw. It can’t produce a finished cut-just breaking stock down to rough dimensions before finishing with hand tools
@@GestellWoodworking just to clarify. Starting at 00:17 seconds, that isn't a planer you are using on the wood?
Oh, those are hand planes. The nomenclature is far from consistent, so one could be forgiven for thinking otherwise, but generally I think “planer” usually refers power planers (ones that feed the material through rotating cutters), and “plane” is usually used to refer to hand planes. Plus “no hand planes” would be an odd boast
@@GestellWoodworking ahhh thank you for the information. I was just genuinely curious as I just started getting into woodworking so I thought I was confused on what a planer was. But what you say makes complete sense!
Amazing work - glad to see another hand tool woodworker not giving in to the pressure of power tools!
Well done mate! Thank you for the ideas. Came out great.
I wish ppl would let old growth trees die naturally before hacking them up to make furniture, instead of cutting down our dwindling forests for "bEAuTifUl SlaBS"....
Me too-recently soap-boxed this on my insta. Maybe next time I hear someone is going take such a tree down I should just let them take it to the burn pit as they intended. That would send a message huh.
Please send it to me in Lebanon 😂
I’m enjoying your video very much. There’s not nearly enough hand tool woodworking on TH-cam. One bit of constructive “criticism”…..lose the PVA glue. Hide glue has been holding furniture together for centuries….a chess board would be effortless, for said glue….and cleanup, even after it cures is a breeze. Looking forward to your next project.
Good morning happy Thursday. Thank you for your kind words. Hope you stay busy.
Looks great, well done!
Easy yang dto s pilipinas,,
That is just awesome dude!
Thanks friend!
I gotta say the resultant product is awesome, however, this has to be a personal board, you can never make any money with this amount of work. You spent sooo much time correcting errors that the video was hard to watch. To see all the work was just boring. Invest in a silicone brush for your glue. When you spread with your hands you introduce oil from your hands and reduce the tactility of the glue. Sorry.
If you have no interest in watching someone make a board with hand tools why even click on the video? Of course making chessboards by hand is not cost competitive compared to using machine tools. It hasn’t been for almost a 100 years now.
I think it’s about the art with these no power tool builds. No one realistically thinks they can build chessboards without power tools and make profit
Whats the stuff you apply at the end to give ot that shine?
I used Osmo oil wax to finish this-three extremely thin coats. It’s holding up well!
@@GestellWoodworkingThanks for sharing that detail. Was wondering myself …
Wow
