Mixam vs KDP - Which one is Better for Self-Published Graphic Novels
I hope this review video will be helpful to any artist looking to print and distribute their self-published graphic novel.
As a disclosure, I often refer to my graphic novel as “comic” but do keep in mind that it’s actually a volume containing 4 comic issues, so it should technically be considered a graphic novel in terms of format and storytelling.
My comic "WORDS AND SAND" is available here: www.amazon.com/Words-Sand-Amirak-Delat-ebook/dp/B08Y63NKKC

For the dark colors, I also had this issue and it's not the fault of the printer probably. When looking at the screen colors seem a lot brighter, so you should check the level of black in your colors when preparing the file. We tend to add too much black especially with night scenes. Regarding the profit, printing one copy is obviously going to be extremely expensive, the only way is to print lots of copies from a good printer. The more copies you print the less the price is going to be. The problem is you need is going to be a gamble, if you don't sell any copy you lose the money you invest...

Great video! Do you actually sell your author copies to people directly? Treating amaoN as pure printing service … Or do you sell the author copies via Amazon platform only?

Thanks! I only donated my author copies to my family/friends so far. I guess one can sell them but the profit margin would be low since there are shipping costs, etc. Otherwise, I really use Amazon as a 3rd party to print/sell.

I've worked at a print shop as a temp when I was in college, and the reason why printing one or two copies is expensive is because there is a pretty complex setup process they have to go through and then they run some comps to make sure the press will run correctly. You're paying for the time the operator spends setting up the press. They run your two books, and they have to recallibrate the machine to run someone else's order. So, physical samples are always going to be expensive.

That makes total sense. Thanks for sharing this! Not many people know the actual process behind the printing business.

Your video title really got my attention because I've used Mixam for my 36 page comic that I've been selling myself but I'm interested in putting it on Amazon for (possibly) more exposure and more and easier access. Can you recommend any good KDP tutorials? Thanks!

That's awesome! To publish your comic on KDP there’s basically 2 steps: Step 1: Download the Kindle Comic Creator app (kdp.amazon.com/en_US/help/topic/G201217140) This will create the file that you can upload on KDP’s website I recommend Amazon Kindle's user guide for Comic Creator: kc2.s3.amazonaws.com/KC2UserGuide_en.pdf Otherwise, this tutorial by Jon Del Arroz was super helpful to me: th-cam.com/video/4gjFcL--dJM/w-d-xo.html Step 2: Create an account on KDP and create a new book to upload your comic. Check out this tutorial: th-cam.com/video/zAkTkn-7rM4/w-d-xo.html Good Luck and feel free to share a link to your comic if you want! :)

Have you thought about a hardcover version? It's only a few dollars more I think. Also, once you start moving many copies, the costs on places like Mixam go way down.

YES - The hardcover version is definitely on my mind! Hopefully when conventions are a thing again I want to give it a try.
