Getting better at anything takes time, patience and practice. Today's video we will have a look at how that works for photographers. Using the Pentax Q10, a tripod and some mental agility. I start with one image and work my way through composition trial and error to make the best photos I can. Taking you along with me every step of the way. Please leave any questions you may have in the comment...

Taking photos in dull over cast conditions, or in darker woodland environments can be really challenging. In this week's video I want to explore one of the ways we can make pictures in poorly lit conditions by adding our own light. #flashphotography #pentaxq10 #oldcameragoodcamera #vintagedigital #oldcameras #woodlandphotography #landscapephotography #localphotography #yorkshirephotographer #wi...

This week we enjoy the excitement of visiting a new place for photography. It is an amazing feeling I get when exploring a new place, because I have no idea what is around the corner, and it could be anything. We are in the cool looking woodland near Silkstone Common in South Yorkshire. I see it quite often from the train but have, until today's video, never taken photos there. There are highs ...

I want to talk about what I loved about the two previous projects I have undertaken and what they have shown me about my photography, as well as what I want to do next. There's so much rushing about in today's modern world. Join me on a quiet walk around a local reservoir, taking picturers as we go. Hi James stumbled across your channel while looking new inspiration for my own channel someday,I like the idea of the channel your calming and pleasing voice just captivated me and it's nice to see something that comes across as sincere good luck in you future projects looking forward to seeing more....
Thank you so much for your comments, all I can say in terms of starting a channel is to just do it. I had wanted to do so for a long time and had a few false starts. Once I started to get into a flow with making videos it got a lot easier, I'm still in the early days of my efforts but the experimentation is really fun for me! 😊 Hope you enjoy my other videos and if you do start soon please feel free to share/link to your videos here I would love to see them!
@oldcameragoodcamera Thanks James I might just do that...
Thank you for a nice, relaxing trip through the country. I enjoyed your photos very much.
I'm so glad you liked it, and I really appreciate the kind words about my efforts. There's a few more videos like it on my channel, I'm still very early on in my video making so I have been trying lots of different ways of making videos - all comments are super helpful in making them better each time 😊
@ I was happy to see your channel pop up in my feed, as I love cameras and the outdoors! Good luck with your channel- I will check out the rest of your videos!
Hi james. I agree. Perspectives from different angles and lenses can change a visual image . I took a similar image by using a beanbag with the camera resting on top of the branch, looking along the branch. Achieved some good images. Regards David
This is a fantastic idea, David. I am going to have to give this a go sometime!
Hi james. I really enjoyed the walk and talk. Some smashing images. I did plan on going out to chelmsford in Essex. To make some images of the inside of the cathedral for xmas celebrations. But the storm put that on hold. So fingers crossed. This weekend, coming, I hope. Will see me achieve my small project. Can not go on my own because I need assistance. Anyway, keep up the brilliant images .appreciate what you have created so far. It's a lot of work to create a video weekly . Best regards David
I hope you are successful with your project at the cathedral, it sounds like a wonderful subject! The weather has been a real struggle for many lately, so any opportunity to go out is great! Thank you as always for continuing to watch and comment on my videos, I appreciate it so much!
I really enjoyed your video and I appreciate your comments about how the search for photographs is what brings joy. That’s what I love about photography, not focussing on the final image, which can often be a disappointment. Just getting out with a camera and engaging in the process of making an image really is so good for our wellbeing. And I love your images too. Thank you.
Thank you so much, I couldn't agree more - the process for me is just as much fun as the final image! 😊
Refreshing photography channel - it is inspiring me to get out and take some images and maybe even start a course. Looking forward to following your channel and soaking up some of your philosophy.
So good to hear that my video has encouraged you in that way - I hope with or without a course you get to enjoy some time out there with your camera. It's all about having as much fun as you can, it's escapism at its finest! Thank you for taking the time to comment on my video, it's really nice to get any sense of how people are finding my content helpful,/enjoyable
Hi james. What a beautiful woodland to walk in and explore. I really do enjoy and look forward to seeing your vision of where you want your channel to go. I think you are going to grow a large gathering of followers due to your ability to orate with confidence.lovely, images of autumn. I have not been out yet to get any autumn images. And I guess it's too late now. Best regards, David
Thank you so much as always for your encouragement - it is really appreciated. You may have missed autumn but I would always encourage you to get out there and shoot what you find! No such thing as too late 😊
It’s a little bit early to have a preference for short or more lengthy videos. I’d like to encourage you to do it as you like and find a public that is comfortable with your style of videos.
Thank you so much for such kind words - I will keep experimenting with different styles, I think I was just becoming conscious of how long my videos were, didn't want to bore anybody! 😁
Great episode. More please.
Thanks for taking time out with me and my channel, I have a few videos uploaded now and I am aiming for a new video every week, hope you find them as enjoyable as this one!
Very enjoyable vid 👍
Thank you so much for taking the time to watch my video! I am super pleased you enjoyed it, I had a lot of fun making it, theres a few more videos on my channel if you liked this one I hope you like the others :)
Thanks Rob. I've enjoyed your autumn videos. Looking forward to seeing what you'll do in winter.
I'm so happy to hear you've enjoyed my videos, I look forward to sharing my winter adventures with you going forward too!
Just ordered a flash gun for Minolta Dimage 7i, which I can use on my other Dimage cameras. Regards Rob.
@@robstammers7149 This is great to hear! I think you will have a lot to experiment with there, the Minolta flash mount super proprietary isn't it? Great work finding a flash for it!
It's the Minolta Program 3600 HS D gun, it has a diffuser fitted too, it's a wireless model which works in conjunction with the Dimage 7i. It suits my needs perfectly as it will fit my Z5 and Z6, I have the Dimage A1 & A2, I have to check it'll work with them, particularly the A2 which I love using. Regards Rob.
Hi again, the fundamental element to any type of photography is light. Light is the connection between you and your camera. Understanding this connection is crucial to what you see through your eyes to the image your camera actually captures. The human eye and a modern digital camera sensor are completely different. But that's a subject for another day's discussion. This is the complexity of photography which fascinates me. Great discussion of the use of a wireless flash, which I'm going to explore. Many thanks Regards Rob.
Couldn't agree more, light is crucial! I think my biggest light bulb moment was realising with flash there is essentially two exposures happening at once - the ambient light and the flash, and you reduce either in favour of the other and find a nice balanced look. Thanks so much for taking the time to comment on my video again! It's so appreciated!
244 here bud! Love the idea of the channel, I too enjoy shooting with older cameras!
Great to have a fellow old camera user along for the ride! There's something fun about creating with supposedly limiting gear that teaches you it's not that limited after all! Thanks for subscribing!
I really appreciate your video quality is amazing. But not many views, not many subscribers. Because many errors in your channel. Like tag sections, description, title, keywords are many errors in your channel. As a result your video SEO score is very low. So I recommend you need to proper SEO and PROMOTION. And if you want you can boost. Then increase lot's of views and subscribers in your channel. As a result you get monetize option.

Hi james. I think you have cracked the talking to the camera. Really enjoyed the walk around a new area. Look forward to another visit in the future. I was just wondering what the woodland has to offer in a different season. I use a canon eos m100. On scouting a new area and a small tripod. Camera in pocket. Tripod in sling over the shoulder and you are away. Regards David
@@daviddunmow thanks so much David! I really am grateful for that comment as I feel I'm making positive steps in the right direction with every upload - I'm definitely more confident than when I started! The EOS M cameras are really underrated I find, I know the original I used once was a fun and engaging tool!
This light is blink not there. F11 in this light?
@jameshchetwyndjr9739 f/11 gave me the depth of field I needed, and with a tripod the shutter speed can be what it wants - I used to shoot way wider when I handheld shooting made shutter speed a constant concern. I am finding a tripod helps me avoid making such compromises in my photos.

James I have old Pentax cameras I photograph with my film camera is a Pentax Spotamatic SP2,. My Pentax DSLR cameras are a *istDL, K100D and a K3-11. I had Apature block failure on my K50 & K70 so I purchased my first used camera my Pentax K3-11 when the Pentax K3 Mark iii came out i waited a couple of years and bought a used one for the fast autofocus as i had begun photographing wildlife and I needed the faster autofocus. I replaced the Apature block on my Pentax K50 & K70 and have since loaned the cameras to my son good luck on me ever getting them back from my son but I am quite happy with the Pentax K3 cameras
@@scrptwic haha yeah good luck with the cameras you "loaned", although I am glad to hear your son is enjoying them so much! I loved the K30 so much I bought a used one with the aperture issue you described, fixed it and installed the K50 software on it to use the 55-300mm PLM lens on. Of all the brands I have tried this year I think the Pentax cameras have been the most well rounded and full featured cameras. They have a little bit of everything, don't they? I have not used a K3 but I can only assume they carry on those same attributes and then some! Wildlife is an area of photography I would dearly love to explore more (apart from the occasional agreeable squirrel) so it's great that these cameras are helping you enjoy your passion, I love to read stuff like this!
No BS= More video views = More subscribers. I’m subscriber 193-you’re doing great! 💙. Cheers! 🥂

Hi james. Great job. Really appreciate it, and i enjoyed the video. What I like about watching your videos is that you are actually outside making images and not sitting behind a desk telling people how to take images. Regards David
Thanks again David, I may occaisonally start or end a video at home, but I really want the majority of the content to be outdoors because that is genuinely where I feel happiest and I am glad it's had a positive impact on your enjoyment of the videos!
Hi james. Approximately 7 minutes into the video. The stone wall is an amazing piece of work. I think an image from the top of the wall on the right bottom corner will change the perspective because the fern growing against the wall and a different angle. I mentioned in a previous comment that using your phone to frame up is a pretty useful tool. Try removing one leg from the tripod to create a monopod with your phone or picture frame attached. This allows the surrounding area to be a completely different view. I mentioned this because I am a wheelchair user.but not all the time. So my perspective is different. Regards David
@@daviddunmow thank you so much for your comments - and I agree I love stone walls! I really think the ability we have with our phones now is truly magic! The monopod idea is fab too - I will definitely keep that in mind! Anything that makes photography more accessible is a good thing in my opinion - and it's great to put out as many tips as possible, thanks so much for all your comments!
Hi james. Congratulations on the milestone. The image of the train was very cool. I liked how you managed to capture the train through the trellis work of the bridge. Quick thinking. Regards David
Thank you, it is still really amazing me that anyone would be willing to spend their time with me and my thoughts on photography, I am so so grateful for all the encouraging comments. The train was very much right time right place, but I am glad I was out with taking pictures in mind! I have seen it a couple of times without my camera with me and always felt I'd missed out!
Hi james It is a very interesting narrative, and I like what you do. Your vision for an image and thought process, i use my tripod on most expeditions. I usually set up my image in camera. But I will use my phone camera to move around the area I have set up in and see if I may have a better shot at a slightly different angle or height. Regards David
I definitely was guilty of not using a tripod as much as I could have in the past - it's something I'm way more encouraging of now, I think it has genuinely improved my photographs no end!
This is a fantastic idea. To me it will help focus on my composition in all types of photography
That is fantastic to hear - I am really glad it helped, I tried lots of things to help improve my composition and found that it needn't be about "rules" as such but ways of "seeing" images that please you. It's a learn by doign kind of practice and that is really rewarding for me. Thank you so much for your comment, it really means a lot!
Just subscribed.looking forward to the journey👍😀
That's so cool, thank you so much! 🙂🙂
What a simple but brilliant idea, I'm gobsmacked, it's a beautiful idea, I'm gonna give this a go. Regards Rob.
Thank you! I hoped it would be a boost to anyone who wanted to practice their composition skills, and it's great to hear it's been a bit of an inspiration 🙂
I was going to suggest a director's eyepiece to help you work through a shot, but there's something about the starkness of that white border... it imprints on the mind's eye differently, rather like a sort of wooden rangefinder 🧐
I do like the idea of anything that can help train your eyes to frame things. The only thing they all suffer from is not being super exact to your lens/camera setup but its something you can build on over time. I think the first battle is understanding what in a scene caught your eye, and then building from there. It's all about constant and small improvements over time 😊
Been up there photographing those windmills a few times

Amazing James on passing 100 subs, of which I'm one of. You are going forward and we are with you for the long term. Cheers fella Regards Rob, Yorkshire.
It's so appreciated, thank you for all your helpful comments already! Glad to have you along!
One more ? Do you use GoPro for your moving shots and talking?
Yeah I use an action camera made by DJI because their wireless mics are a real doddle to setup for talking to camera - I have really enjoyed using it as a setup, the only thing it doesn't do is focus (it's a fixed focus so at arms length most things are in focus but I can't use it to show the back screen of the camera I'm using very easily) but apart from that it's brilliant and just what I needed!
Also like the look of your camera backpack, what brand and does it work well?
It's a bag made by K&F Concept - I have to admit the fact it matched the colour of my coat was a big draw initially - but it has turned out to be a really flexible bag that holds a lot of gear very comfortably. I think they do an all black model too - I really like it in the yellow though!
Really enjoyed your video and content. How do you get such nice video image quality, 4k or other? Which editing software? Thx.
@@gregpatterson134 Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it - the footage in this video was recorded with a mixture of an OM System OM-1 and a DJI Action 4 - they are both really fab video cameras for doing this kind of thing. I use Final Cut but I am nothing close to an expert on the software. I have tried to record everything in LOG and colour corrected as best I could in Final Cut. Once I get a more stable method of putting stuff together I may need to do a video to show how I do it but I'm not super confident I'm doing it right yet.
