This is ultra boring to me.

A good story ruined by using Chen again.

I fail to believe that experienced commanders would be stupid enough to tell the opposing forces exactly how you’ve defeated them. When they returned a few years later and blew you to hell you’d only have yourself to blame.

Quantum detection grid picked up gravitational distortions. I feel like Rick Sanchez, yelling at the kids on my quantum lawn. Because you can’t just take regular words and throw a “quantum” in front of it. Also, gravity is the thing we have not been able to reconcile with quantum mechanics. Not yet, anyway. And if they’re trying to do some kind of “quantum computers are better than regular computers” thing… they’re better at doing very specific things. Mostly, they’re more expensive, take up more space, and cost way more. They will beast-f-k current encryption algorithms. There are new encryption algorithms that aren’t easily defeated by quantum computers. They will be way slower at doing normal math stuff, like graphics and whatnot. So… as with most tech stuff, it’s just an evolving arms race.

There is no way humanity could just stop using EM band signals. We use WiFi’s n and g variants because they’re backwards compatible with the hardware from .11a. So it’s just a software patch instead of buying all new hardware. Wi-Fi itself is HUGELY inefficient, because it’s pretending to be the even older Ethernet (as in, network wires) protocols. Ethernet does stuff that way because it’s pretending to was literally one wire with a bunch of computers connected to it. So there’s a bunch of stuff each computer does to make sure it’s the only computer talking at that instant. And all of the Wi-Fi protocols do all that same time-wasting stuff, even though there is no wire, and radio waves handle two computers talking at the same time. But at each step in the process, the least amount of work they could do to get to next step means they left a bunch of functionality in place. There’s this story… don’t know if it’s true, but it illustrates the process well. Modern cars are a certain width now because the road lanes are a certain width. Why are they that width, and not some other arbitrary width? Because that’s how wide a horse carriage is. That’s based on some even older tech, etc. And eventually, you get back to Ancient Rome building roads all over their land, and those roads were wide enough for a pair of oxen to pull a cart. And even though there are no more Roman ox-carts, the width of an ox is still relevant to modern urban planning. Because nobody designed a highway system from scratch, they just do incremental changes over time. For whatever reason, Hitler was a big time fan of railroads. WW2 tanks were built certain sizes because they had to fit onto freight trains. So when the OG Nazis tried to build ultra-mega-tanks, they realized they were too big and too heavy to use roads (also why Trump never got his North Korea-style military parade… the Washington DC roads would get mangled by a bunch of tanks driving around). He also wanted double-decker trains with gun turrets and whatever. Would have looked cool AF to 12yr old me, but they figured out that they’d need wider rail cars… and therefore wider train tracks. And even peak-wartime German industry could not spend the time or money to upgrade their entire rail network. Like… design new tanks that can fit onto freight trains existing trains… cool, you changed one thing and got new tanks. But overhauling the rail network gets you NOTHING except for a bunch of train cars that no longer fit. Then you can upgrade the actual trains. THEN you can upgrade your tanks or whatever. Except… France and Poland are probably using the old sizes, so once you invade them, you have to take the time and effort (and iron) to overhaul THEIR rail networks. I guess I’ll point at one last thing. Ask yourself if you’ve ever taken a commercial flight somewhere, only to realize at the end that you put your phone into your bag without turning it to airplane mode first? How many people do you imagine do the same thing? Now, ask yourself how likely it is that every person in the world would be willing to stop using all of their devices, and how many would forget about the box in the garage with all their old phones in it? It’s like herding cats. But they did it in like a week, and they somehow managed to organize and coordinate the entire planet doing it without using any of the old communication networks the aliens are already monitoring. That would include every satellite already in orbit.

the story can only be as stupid as the person who thought it up. showing the enemy how your own technology works while the battle is not yet over is more than just idiotic.
