This video and the story surrounding it, came up in conversation today with a guy at work. Upon watching it again, it appears to me that a waypoint mission had been programmed to follow the channel. Perhaps a failsafe condition caused the waypoint mission to become activated, but the steady descent throughout the entire flight from the point at which manual control was lost, is indicates that the plane had been incorrectly set up for "straight and level flight". The aircraft attempted to follow it's waypoints, but without the ability to maintain it's altitude and thereby making contact with the water. I would have liked to have seen the entire mission play out, as I'm guessing it would have had returned to the launch site.
fair enough, control may have been lost, it happens, however at take-off you are only yards away from the airport, a far more serious offence it seems you avoided punishment for.
obviously havnt read all comments.. the airfield is classed as part time, so it was a sunday (when it was closed) as the airfield houses a model flying club, who fly from the airfield, there was never any saftey concerns about where i was flying from
robert knowles Quadcopter whether within opening hours or not, airports and the areas around them are no fly zones without authorization, which the model flying club would have. You however didn't. anyway, a lot of the advice and regulation around this stuff is quite recent. shit happens, the fines probably a bit harsh. Perhaps you could pursue compo from the drone manufacturer? PS. how do ya like the hubsan? I'm looking for an upgrade and am considering it.
to be fair if your wanting to upgrade what ever you have to a hubsan, your still playing with toys, i was flying in a safe and legal area SIMPLE, do your homework and check info on barrow air field, and its operating hours, dont you think the CAA would have included that in the offence ?
The round blue areas on the map indicate Aerodrome Traffic Zones, they surround smaller airports and aerodromes that do not have additional controlled airspace. Other areas of blue identify Controlled Airspace. If you are operating a drone above 7kg (MINE WAS 4kg)you must not fly in these areas without prior permission from the air traffic service provider controlling that airspace. If you are under 7kg, it is still strongly advised to notify the air traffic service provider of your activity. This is a private airfield with opening hours, i was flying on a Sunday, out of hours, perfectly legal!
I think fpv drones need a mini EMERGENCY PARACHUTE RELAESE SYSTEM IF the RC control signal to plane is lost With an EMERGENCY BUTTON ATTACHED TO YOUR TRANSMITTER you can push if need be (Then using a Signal scource which covers a longer range than the Basic RC signal ) Once designed and produced a requirement written up by the BMFA for this sort of safety device must be fitted to all RC FIXED WING aircraft before flight THAT WAY you can save the model and it will float down to the ground I don't have a solution for saving RC Heli as the rotor would chop up the parachute any ideas anyone ???
just read about your case, sorry you have to deal with a corrupt government who doesn't imprison white collar criminals that rape the worlds wealth, instead they focus on people who flu UAV's not posing any real danger. I hope life is getting better for you, can we get an update on how you are doing?
Hi Robert, I'm writing from the Press Association. We're currently putting together a video news piece on Quadcopters. Do you think it would be possible for us to use a clip from the above video? Many thanks. Angus
kgill99 The CAA have only prosectuted because i kicked there investigator out of my premisses aft he started pointing fingers at me, then made a complaint to his boss, but before that he was telling me about another case he was working on, not very profesional if you ask me, tip of the day, dont put your name and address on your models, it counts for nothing..
Loved this, Never seen the Abbey from the sky. Train passing was ace ! Awsome soundtrack thanks for creating this, I also found it by accident - brilliant!
No Paul you were commenting on the fact i was flying near the airport, the flight was out of airport hours and within all caa and walney airport fields (no flight zone within opening hours), and yes i have 2 insurances BMFA and FPV insurance, and as you have already looked threw my vids you will only see one on there using a quad and it never lost control, surely there must be some kids playing football in the streets for you to have a whine about ?
As a private pilot who flew out of Walney, its often used by fellow pilots out of hours, as well as the Gliding futurity, as well as it being classed as an emergency landing area for aircraft with a problem, and occasionally for military exercises. Please respect the rules of the air.
LOL paul, both the CAA and Walney airfield had no concerns about me flying where i was, im guessing your a member of the model club that flies off the airfield ? seriously lol get a life
Not correct Robbie I am not connected to any any more, however I am just commenting on looking at safety of others, I assume you have a good insurance policy, I hope you never have to use it, but, one day you might need it after already seeing that you have nearly hit buildings, boats, frightened livestock etc. when you have lost control of the Quad. I will not bother you again, but I politely ask you to please respect others when enjoying your self with your Quad camera.
what a clever "runaway" plane at 2:07 for it to bank left all by itself to avoid the buildings and point directly at the bridge. at what point did you "lose control"?
Dodge Ditchburn, you obviously havnt read the link or even read the title, I wasnt flying the plane it was a run away, in simple terms i lost sight/control of it over a mile away
What no fail-safe options? Surely part of the design should have been to return to launch point in the event of radio failure or at worst cut power to rotors or at best without GPS to cut power and deploy parachute. Was it a commercially, bought drone or a home design build?
Loved every minute of that, I've never seen the Abbey from that angle before plus train passing which adds to it, I guess thats you controlling from the car park, my only dislike is I hate queen but being serious this video is brilliant, thanks for putting it on even though I came across it by accident ( I was looking for Furness Abbey railway hotel to see if any cine film was on before it was demolished)

what model of drone was this??
It was a 4 foot foam wing, home built using apm flight system

it was 9 in the evening , the outside airport opening hours lol
I dont think the CAA or Walney Airfield Staff will like this, but it is well done, please thinkbof aircraft safety when flying.
So what was the laptop on the roof of the car for?......assisting with LOS?
Telemetry there was no fpv equipment what so ever on this occation

Indeed it was
please remove the god-awful image stabilisation

wingco39 failsafe was the problem! it sent it where it went....
@2:58 How stupid to fly like that! Learn some rules.
he wasnt actually flying he lost control, the plane was recover by BAE who contacted the Police who contacted the CAA
So that was all on APM from 1:15 onwards? Fairly stable!
***** thats what the apm supposed to do :)
Guessing the RTH wasn't working?
***** it wasnt enabled, only used it for a stable platform

whats the story behind this video?
no not yet CAA send me a folder with the videos on cd, but they told me i could have it back.......
You got it back, well done.
