Erard the Steinway of the 19th century
Debussy's Blüthner was a 1904 'Aliquot' model with extra strings on the top three octaves. He bought this in Eastbourne on the south coast of England after having hired one for his stay at the Grand Hotel there. It's likely that the first work he composed at this instrument was 'Reflets dans l'eau', a replacement first movt. for Images bk1. Debussy took the Blüthner back to Paris where it had pride of place in his salon. After his death and that of Emma Bardac the piano passed to Bardac's son Raoul who moved to Brive. On his death his wife gifted the instrument to her doctor who sold it to a local dealer. It was subseqently bought by the museum in Brive where it still resides to this day.
What a wonderful piece, probably one of the most beautiful ever ! And your rendition is very nice! Thank you very much for sharing it !
Bösendorfer sounds clearer, more accurate and overall creates a calmer fealling. For those reasons is my preference.
Strumento meraviglioso.bsonobopere d'arte in piena regola.❤
A fascinating and really interesting video on piano restoration. I have a baby Bluthner and would like that done to mine, although not in anyway as bad as the Bosendorfer, a piano that produces such an exciting sound.
Bravooooooo
Very nice, thank you for sharing. I've got a 1912 Grotrian-Steinweg short grand, bought it when a University Music Department was getting rid of it as well as some Steinways, Bluthners, Bösendorfers, etc. Went for the Grotrian-Steinweg (marked as "Steinweg Sucessors" for marketing for import into the UK I imagine) as it had become my preferred practice piano rather than all the other ones, both for responsiveness of action (repetition) and tone. Always been interested in Erards and recently tried an 1880s London Erard. Loved the action, and tone inspiring despite being out of tune. What struck me about the Erard's action response in addition to excellent repetition, and what I feel like I can also hear in your playing the Grotrian-Steinweg in this video is the fine dynamic control in particular the fine ability to play softly, subtly and sensitively - not softly from the perspective of an audience member in a large concert hall, but softly from the perspective of the pianist, which I struggle with on many modern pianos, also still somewhat on my 1912 Grotrian-Steinweg (possibly partly due to wear and tear, though have had technical work done on action regulation, possible due to inherent limitation of design).

Ur a magician!
Isn’t Borsendofer better suited for Mozart?
Very informative, thank you.
Amazing job! I don't know anything about piano restoration but this was fascinating to watch!
bosendorfer, piano choosed by O.Peterson
I'm currently working on the dampers of my 1867 London Erard. Did you have to replace the springs and glue the felt to the moving arm? I'm not sure what the best glue would be.
normal wood glue.. yes I made new springs from piano wire
@@sarbachpiano Thank you! Did the spring rod have rope sheating over yours? I find it challenging to place the springs back on. I'm looking into making my own springs.
Complimenti.🤗
Bravo!
Thank you
Beautiful interpretation!
What a fantastic video showing some of the detail of the amazing work you do. Really interesting. Thank you; I have learnt so much from your channel.
Absolutely beautiful work, I do have a question if you dont mind. My 1914 Bluthner 190 aliquot grand has several cracks in the soundboard that dont affect the sound but Id like to repair, how would I go about acquiring the strips that you used? Thanks
you can get parts on meyne.com, if you want to do it yourself, I would recommend you at least advice of a experienced person
Stunning restauration, beautiful!
Thank you
congratulations, may I know if you changed the felts on the hammers or if they are original and matching?
Beautiful piano, sonds very, very, very good, sir!
Perfect, I Love Grotrians. All of them, all models. Quality, and sound of them penetrate streight in my heart.
Sonds really good. Respect.
❤
Great job ! What's amazing about instruments is that we can take two similar instruments (frame, soundboard ribs, length, number of chords for individual keys) and they will still sound different. :)
I recently went to a ‘venue, where there was a Steinway, Model M, (6’) undamped, and so out of tune it made the enamel on my teeth flake off and my eyes water. WHO DOES THAT to a piano ? It is not just an offence - it is a SIN. i was torn between setting fire to it to put it out of its misery and making an offer of £5
That's like a Lamborghini in a junk yard. OH SHIT, LOOK AT THAT.
Salut my friend super Piano super video subscribe subscribe ...
Oh my! What a lovely sound. Beautiful restoration! The bass is very rich.
Il Bluthner ha un suono più delicato 😄
Gotta love the way you restored that Bosendorfer back to its former glory, screaming to be played on again.
The Bösendorfer has a clean, sharp elegance. The Blüthner oozes character. I always loved the sound of a well prepared Bösendorfer over Steinways and Bechsteins, but Blüthner always were so different that I felt I could not compare them properly. I was looking for a good grand, 200-230 cm long some time ago and of course played Bösendorfee 200 and 225 instruments which were wonderful but of course really expensive (45-80000€). Then I found a Blüthner X (230cm) from 1908 with a double repetition action and fell in love for a third of what a Bösendorfer 225 would have been. Now I have this characteristic sound in my living room. Sometimes I wonder if a Bösendorfer 225 would be nicer. Then I stop, call myself an idiot and remind myself that I do own one of the finest pianos. The grass is always greener on the other side and as long as two grands in my living room is not an option, I shall be happy and excited.
What a beautiful big whole sound
That was super-interesting Fabian. Thank you, and keep up the good work.
I prefer the second piano sound.😊
This piano business would do well to hire a sound recording engineer for videos on this nature
Actually I think Steinway do produce their own hammers - in the US for their New York pianos - so I guess this New York Steinway should technically be fitted with those hammers in order to be "original". Having said that I totally agree that the hype around Steinway only parts is rubbish and you can achieve just as good results with parts from other manufacturers. Look forward to hearing and seeing the results of your work on this piano.
