Bechstein Concert 8 or Bösendorfer 130? 🤔 thoughts?
Secondo me si fa preferire
What I would give to have any one of these! Especially living in the US. . I do agree that the Bechstein is special. They all have a pretty powerful sound, but there is something special compared to the sound of modern pianos. There is more character in these old instruments than modern pianos. I can enjoy a modern instrument, but these transform you into a lost time. What beautiful work you have done with these instruments and can see why you have a difficult time parting with them. If I ever make it to Switzerland, I would love to see your store. Best wishes from NY,! Ed
Wow. I am thoroughly impressed
Thank you for saving that wonderful piano, I cringed when I noticed it was a bosendorfer .
Very impressive work. What was the device at 2:18? A humidity sensor? Thank you
Yes,❤
I did the exact same thing on a Steinway Model D from 1940 and I tore it down to its bones. It took me 2 weeks because I was taking my time and would work on it after work. I got the piano for free because it was dogged up and wound up selling it for $70,000. I sold it to a Broadway theatre. They fell in love with it because that piano was the best 1940 Model D from 1940 in the world. I wound up restoring 46 more after that and made it an actual business just getting junked grand pianos and restoring them.
How did using an impact driver to just zip each tuning pin out effect the pinblock? I've always done it slow, only a second or so per tuning pin then move on to another, to avoid excessive heat in the pinblock if i'm not replacing it. Were the new pins jumpy at all?
Do you have to change the gauge of wire when replacing an iron wound bass string with a copper wound one? I have a period instrument I need to replace all the strings on but can't find iron wire anywhere.
It is possible to get iron wire from hellerbass.eu but I recommend copper anyway it is simply better, and no company uses iron anymore today...
Lovely piano, but is it not a Style VII from before 1925? I am guessing because there are no aliquot strings and it has Bluthner Patent Action. I liked your demonstration of the repeated notes; people just say stuff! Bravo!
It doesnt look like a barnfind to me ? 🐔💩
The Bluthner was out of tune across most of the keyboard but especially in the top treble and the Bosendorfer was also out of tune but not as bad as the Bluthner. It's a real pity because both of these piano's are truly awesome instruments and they both could've sounded so much more beautiful with a proper tuning and some voicing in their treble regions. Personally, I would take that Bluthner.
Fantastic restoration! What is the first piece that you play? It is beautiful :))
@@StanislavStanchev it is a etude of chopin, op 25 I dont know the number, but you will find it

I wish all subscribers more Fabian in 2025 ;)
I have a 1985 Grotrian-Steinweg upright piano; it's incredibly good.
Thank you, yes it is for sale, you find it on my homepage sarbachpiano.ch
Love your works and interpretations. I'm restoring one Bossendorfer 155, from abt 1924.
Great video, thanks. The tuning pins seem to be rather large though. Why did you decide not to replace the wrest plank?
Thank you. Yes the new tuning pins are 7,5 x 56 so the second largest size. they all hold very strong (almost too strong :-)) and the wrestplank had no issues at all. So why not keep it?
@@sarbachpiano I suppose that the argument in favour of replacing the wrestplank is that it will inevitably need replacing in the not-so-distant future (perhaps in less than 20 years given that the pins are already at the second largest size) and that it would have been much easier to replace it while you were doing the other restoration work than later on. I guess that the argument against replacing them would be the cost of doing so versus the value that this would add to the current sale price. Similar cost/benefit considerations presumably apply to re-facing versus replacing the hammers.
@@sarbachpiano Also, I wasn't sure what you meant by the text in the video ("original sound"). Is this a recording of the piano before or after restoration? There's a lot of 'tubbiness' in the tenor>bass, e.g. the B flat and E flat from 5:12
When you take the keys off the piano at the beginning all the “ivories” are present, other picture show damaged keys….not sure I believe this restoration is actually real!👎🏻
I didn`t show the restoration. I filmed this in other videos...
I am following your work; greetings from Georgia. My Grotrian-Steinweg piano was manufactured in 1886 (it is already 138 years old). It is an upright piano (not a grand piano). Currently, it is tuned to 404 Hz, and I do not interfere with its authenticity to avoid losing it. However, I am wondering if it would be possible to raise the tuning to 432-440 Hz (the strings are in good condition, and the tuning pins, at first glance, still have some reserve). Thank you, and I wish you all the best.
♥️
Odd choice of music
The bass and tenor sing... Warm, alive, and beautiful. Elegant... a treasure. Fine restoration, Sir, congratulations🏆 A very happy Grotrian owner awaits...
Yiruma sounds so beautiful on this piano!!
In a barn? An air conditioned and humidified barn with air filtration? Cleaner than most 20 year old pianos I run into in living rooms.
Nice detail is the support of the pinblock. Normally we use this when changing a wheel on the car.
Well seen, it is from my old Toyota that finally went to Africa :-)

The final price for restoration?
Fantastic video, thank you!
I love the attention to detail and the effort. I can't say I would ever want that two tone color scheme in my home, even being a Bosendorfer. 😉
Oh picky picky 🤧
Bosendorfer is much better!!

The Blüthner was shrill in the upper registers and wasn't quite in tune - just a bit flat. It was very obvious that it was not tuned using the tuner's discriminating ear in the last few measures when a first and a third were played together by the right hand. It sounded like it was tuned using an electrical tuning machine and not adjusted in the thirds and fifths. The bass had little presence - it was just a low note. The Bösendorfer was just a bit out of tune in the upper registers but not nearly as bad as the Blüthner. The Bösendorfer's upper notes were almost bell-like and not uncomfortably shrill. The bass had a nice resonant presence. The first and third notes near the end matched the mood of the piece - somber but in tune and not jangly. The Blüthner was 6'3". The Bösendorfer was 6'7" so size alone shouldn't make much difference. The quality and resonance of the sound board has to be the deciding factor in choosing which piano to purchase. It appeared that the mics were placed in just about the same place on each piano. The Bösendorfer would get my vote for the better sounding piano in this "contest." I would have liked to hear a piece that could have pressed the acoustics and resonance of the sound board as well as the lower end to their limits - a piece that was very difficult. Moving the mics off of the sound board and further out to where the "audience" would be would have displayed each piano's sound better.
Amazing sound! Clear, full, round, refined.
Being made to be loud while forgetting to make it play beautiful is something that has been lost from the modern piano industry thanks to gatekeepers telling people who want different what piano they want and throwing away period instruments like they mean nothing. The modern piano ruins the kind of music I write but these period instruments don't even though this piano is much more modern than the one I write for which has 77 keys, 2 strings per note and the strings don't cross.
Absolutely gorgeous now!!😊😊😊
Wow, amazing resurrection.
What was that mix you used for the cast iron plate? Mine has gotten all speckled and I want to do something like this when I eventually restring.
