How hard is it to beat X-COM: Terror from the Deep on Superhuman?
มุมมอง 51K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Finally time for TFTD! Had to learn the game ahead of playing, but that's going to be a consistent requirement if I plan on playing mods. Hopefully I can get the next video out a bit quicker. OpenXcom: openxcom.org/ LP Playlist: th-cam.com/video/9rxolDgOPK0/w-d-xo.html
How Hard is it to Beat the Original X-COM on Superhuman?
มุมมอง 103K10 หลายเดือนก่อน
In this video, I recount my playthrough of the original X-COM game (X-COM: UFO defense or UFO: Enemy Unknown) from 1994. Technically this was a playthrough on OpenXcom, not the actual original game, but I'm sure you can understand my decision behind that. While I didn't enjoy editing this down, I would certainly do it again if this video gains any amount of attention. Thanks for watching! I've ...
I'm aware of the various visual and audio issues in the video. As you may have guessed, I had issues with the editor. Instead of redoing the entire video, I've gone ahead and posted it in the current state. I can talk more about it in the discord if you're curious, otherwise enjoy! This took far longer than expected. I'll do a space age run sooner than later, though I'm looking to play another game first. I'm most the way through a first playthrough of space age, so when I do get around to it, I'll know what to expect. Additionally, this was the first of my "variety" videos that I'll be posting. I'm still sticking to the vague category of games that make me think, but I'll be playing some games other than X-COM in the hopes that people enjoy them. This will allow me to play the crazy mega mods people have been asking for (think X-COM Files), and I'd love to play one of these mods without disappearing for a year or more. Let me know what you think, and if you'd like to see some of the big Factorio mods in the future.
The music and pixel art in classic xcom is gorgeous.
Having watched this blind, about half on my second monitor and half on my phone while cooking dinner, I didn't really notice the frame drops. I tend to watch compilation videos like this while I'm doing other stuff so I don't think it affects it too badly. I did notice some choppiness in the audio specifically with 'copper' at 1:24. Rechecking to see if I could see the frame issue I also noticed the audio at 0:09. I don't think the audio or visual hiccups are deal breakers for posting this though.
Tyty, I was hoping that this would be the case. The audio is an issues are little edits I had to make due to pops and such I noticed after I had the ability to re-record. Not great, but far less jarring than before. I'll leave this unlisted for now so youtube can work through its various processing tasks, but will likely release this in a day or two. Thanks again for your feedback!
It is actually super easy, barely an inconvenience. But only because of a bug that resets the difficulty to super easy after the first mission. Then plays the rest of the game like that. Which is very jarring when a single sectoid downs 7 out of 16 squaddies on your first op. Then become dum dums in all subsequent missions. Terror from the deep notably did not have this bug, and was considered widely as a much harder experience as a result.
Thats why I played on OpenXcom. Said bug is not present there.
Cheers for these, needed a bit of retro X-Com for my work day.
No problem, glad you enjoyed!
all i know is, always skip the cruise ship terror attacks
Learned that the hard way
I’m older than this game. 😭
This is one if my favorite videos on all of TH-cam. The music, game, and your presentation were all exactly what I wanted. Keep up the great work!
Tyty! Glad you enjoyed! More content sooner or later.
Well it does look a little hard for simple people.
Would you be interested in playing xcom apocalypse or phoenix point?
I'm looking to play OpenApoc (apocalypse project similar to OpenXcom) whenever thats done, and haven't looked much at phoenix point. I got the impression that phoenix point was similar to the newer games, and didn't take much or an interest. I'm sure I'll get around to all the newer games at some point, but they aren't a priority.
Do TFTD and you're a literal superhuman
I may or may not already have a video on that
If you enjoy trying older games I recommend The Lost Vikings (1993). It's made by the company that eventually became Blizzard.
Not old games, so much as games that make me think. Xcom is one of the best for that. I'll take a look, I've got a list of recommendations already that I can add it to.
love it please post more
Soon
"This version of the game is 10 years older than me". F my life, just let my bones disintegrate already.
"we'll be watching your career with grewt interest.." Jokes aside, gonna join discord and also question - will you be playing Xenounauts max difficulty then?
Not something I'm opposed to, however I'm far more interested in mods for the moment. I have it on my list along side Apocalypse, so I'll end up playing it eventually, but it'll likely have to win a vote in a channel poll.
25:39 brazilian corrupt polictics strike again lol
Indeed
Good video as alway with a great naration (the only problem is the micro with who produce a slight background noise but not the most dramatic thing). For future playtrought after your Reaver Harmony one (which i hope receive the same tratement as your two last xcom and TFTD playthrought), you could trie XCOM apocalypse (great game with few playtrought online and no sort of superedit) or the XCOM file (great but TITANIC modpack for open xcom).
Tyty! Apocalypse is on my radar, however I'm waiting for OpenApoc to be completed. I have no idea how long that will take, however once it is done, I'll play Apocalypse. As for larger modpacks, that depends on how the non-Xcom videos do. They will take forever to beat, and I'll need to keep uploading something in that time.
I only ever played this game on easy. But I would have enough money to recruit harvest accurate marksmen. So my guys would all have accuracy of 70 or over. Once I got to the mind control stage and realised that most of my snipers would panic very easily I started looking at other stats as well. I don't know if it's a bug, but elerium was never a problem as the alien attacks on my base gave something like 2000 elerium. I had to sell it just to have enough storage space. I love this game and this playthrough is very interesting.
Im a somewhat new xcom fan, and dawm this one is way prettier than ew and 2
Bs. you've changed the core rules.
Hah, i blasted the brain with a guided blaster bomb once, though i was no more then 3 or 4 corners away from it when i did. My absolutely favorite method though, was to train two squads of elite Psy operatives, proceed to take control of the Etherials guiding it, and use them to kill it!
Wish you explained the differences present in Superhuman. Great video and editing though
It'd take a while to explain them all, but I understand the desire. For the most part, there are just a lot more aliens on missions, and they spawn with better items. I just figured most people had a passing knowledge of the game due to its age, and didn't bother to go that in depth.
Yes, give me a hour of 90s XCOM! I just played both for the first time earlier this year. Time for another run I guess.
Enjoy!
Is Xcom harder or easier than Xenonauts?
No idea, I've only played Xcom.
I hated the mid sea anti terror attack missions. The ships had too many small rooms and hallways, and not only one but two levels to clear. It took forever to find that last alien. Worse when there's several terror attacks one after the other.
I love UFO Defense. One thing I do to farm resources is placing a base near an alien base that isn't sectoids. The landed larges will match the base inhabitants and they show up every(ish) month. I just send rookies with laser rifles and personal armor. Laser rifles so you don't need extra storage for clips, and personal armor because you can create alien alloys to make them anyways. So you're trading money for elerium. And it pumps your score. Camping UFO doors for the streams of aliens coming out and murdering your guys, kneel and have them look at an angle in the room (or ufo) to both sides of the door, otherwise you'll just kill your own guy with reaction shots. This also protects them from immediate vision, forcing the alien to walk out, and then turn before being able to shoot giving you lots of chances at reaction fire. Also with laser/plasma can you shoot your own door into a UFO wall, but it might take a while to destroy. With hoversuits you can assault any UFO by shooting holes in the walls/roof for vision at different tile heights.
The amount of X-COM PTST I have is impressive. Hearing the Chryssalid sound make me want to nope out of there. (:
okay brother, u need a better mic, other than that - great videos - editing, script and commentary are on point, if you keep this up - i think that the algorithm may choose you, just dont sellout after that, lol godspeed, commander o7
The mic was an issue. I finally got enough attention on these to actually justify getting a new one, so assuming I'm using it right, audio should be better (not really sure what I'd be doing wrong). Also no plans to sell out, unless I get offered retirement worthy money. I'm just here to play games, and am happy people are enjoying. Thanks for watching!
wtf brother, that was good, and only ~90k views? godspeed, commander o7
Thanks! Was a lot lower before TFTD, but I've caught some attention since then. Glad you enjoyed!
Ahh nostalgic
any body ever play Lazer Squad? It looked like Xcom but multiplayer. Also Xenonauts
That was exciting. Good to see OpenXcom getting some love.
22:00 Imagine the relief of hearing X-Com come to save you only to hear them immediately turn back around and fly away. Total 0 to 100 to 0 moment.
Imagine your alien invasion foot troops are so bad your enemy has to build specially accessible, walkable hangar bays so they don't get stuck
I imagine the invasion would fail
Actually, if you have Vibro-blade, Disruptor Pulse Launcher, and Magnetic Ion Armor, it's easy. Definitely get Vibro Blade first, ghis thing can 1-shot almost everything, that is if you can get close.
It is quite easy, first missions are scripted, there is single last mission for it, just do not do it, and you can have easy beginner enemies for as long as you want, when you got all inventions you want, train your squad, you can do that last one scripted mission , and finish game with great weapons and trained squad.
The fact that you are selling your soldiers so easy is heartbreaking. I always had my team from first mission to Cydonia.
>"Please something happen I need money" >first cruise ship mission >LOBSTERMEN ahahahaha fuck you xcom
I hope youre down for the Marbozir XCOM2 modlist, its absolutely incredible. Closest thing to feeling like the breadth of OG, but the depth is shocking.
I'll take a look at it. The newer games aren't my favorite for a number of reasons, but I'll happily look through some mods to see what they change.
I preffer smaller and simplier maps from the first game. Not spending two hours finding last Alien hidding in the closet on the ship.... It has good atmosphere, but difficulty spike was way too much.
This is about how I feel. Everything in the game was made to take longer, from weapons being able to shoot less, to larger maps. It was hard at the start, but eventually I just had to keep playing to win.
Blaster Launcher guidance is affected by the accuracy of soldier using it. It is possible to guide it all the way trough base, but even with very high accuracy it can still lose its tracking and slam into wall somewhere.
Interesting, I didn't know that. Makes sense given Cydonia...
I'm going to sit out this generation, or two, possibly. 3060 is doing great.
Am I crazy that I find the TFTD graphics a lot better?
Maybe, I'd say it's more of a style preference than anything. TFTD is a lot more distinct than UFO defense, so that may influence your opinions.
I quite enjoyed the video. For games like these watching the entire campaign is something I never manage to do. So a shorted rundown with the important points outlined was very fun. Glad you didn't make it too short, 50-60 minutes was just right.
Tyty! This is how I feel about a lot of games, so I thought I'd try making videos about some I have beaten. Funny enough, it's also a lot easier to finish something when you know other people are watching and waiting. Glad you enjoyed and though the pacing was right!
Aliens!
Never let Virgil Gallagher die, he is the best soldier in the game and you start with him almost every time
Advanced civilization lost to smoke grenades.
Nailing all that research in the first month! I first completed this on my Amiga 1200 but I used a program to edit the starting base and probably some other stuff. I bought a printed guide off a dude that I clipped into a folder. I'd always disregarded the traditional tanks but you've convinced me to give them a go.
Thanks for watching! I always thought tanks were a lot less fun than soldiers myself, but I gave them a try here. It's nice to have a unit that isn't made of paper in the early game.
@@PotatoCaravan I need to step my game up. And definitely explode more stuff. I'm enjoying the CRT style screen filters built into OpenXcom these days. Great vid.
@@redStiv Thanks!
6:13 You've spread your troops too much and aren't using overwatch (reserving time units) enough. At minimum, soldiers should be moving in pairs , alternating their movement - one on overwatch, one moving forward into cover - and use kneeling position to increase accuracy and reduce the chance of getting hit by enemy fire. Personally I used to split my entire team into fireteams of 2-3 soldiers (2 with rifles, 1 with a heavier weapon) and then alternate on a fireteam basis. This allowed each group to absolutely murder any alien that came into line of fire, and since the aliens usually moved one at a time, losses were extremely rare. I generally avoid smoke grenade use because the LOS affects my troops just as it does aliens. 9:47 You're not using flares. They're a godsend in night missions like this. 28:33 TBH I don't bother with the intermediate craft at all. Interceptors are good enough if equipped with Avalanche missiles, so I just progress straight to Avengers once I have that tech unlocked. 35:54 Just as you dedicated a base to engineering, dedicating another to research might be a good idea. That way you have a lot more space for storage at your primary base
