Relationships Matter: a Law and Justice interview with Georgie Oldfield
In this interview with Georgie Oldfield, a leading physiotherapist, author of "Chronic Pain: Your Key to Recovery" (2014), by focusing on repressed emotions and empowering people through psychoeducation and self-soothing techniques. We discuss Georgie's training as a physiotherapist, the absence of a focus in healthcare on the role of emotions and undigested trauma in disease and mental health problems. Drawing on examples of gallbladder pain, sciatica and migraines in her own life and patterns and triggers behind them, we discuss how Georgie had a lightbulb moment when she discovered the work of John E Sarno MD ( e.g. his book "Healing Back Pain: the Mind Body Connection" which helped her rethink her approach to dealing with chronic pain in her patients.
We talk about the importance of authenticity, the work of Dr Gabor Mate and Dr Dan Siegel, exploring how and why certain personality types, such as intellectual/analytical individuals, caregivers, those who are very controlling or perfectionist may be more prone to pain and exacerbate it. We consider the limits of the pain management approach, and talk about why Georgie decided to establish SIRPA training (see www.sirpa.org). We discuss techniques such as journalling, and developing a somatic awareness, including the ability to notice triggers before a flare-up, to empower people to be agents of their own wellbeing. In terms of what politicians and policy-makers could do to improve the prospects of all children growing up to enjoy healthy bodies, Georgie states that we need to educate children, parents, schools and doctors about emotions.

I am so so sorry to hear this. It is heartbreaking for you and your children being left to deal with the mental trauma alone. Children should be at the forefront and prioritised immediately. Our government are paid to care but don't provide the services to those in great need. Private counselling costs a fortune and is not affordable for a large majority of people. I really am so sorry to hear this has happened to you and your family on top of losing a child.

Glad to hear this topic being discussed. If we know what causes trauma we can intervene early. As speakers say, early intervention, cross department approach and real listening and presence at the coalface is essential. Theoretical knowledge and training is not enough. Highly suggest listening to / interviewing cognitive scientist Prof. John Vervaeke ( of series on " waking from the meaning crisis"). Lack of meaning can leave people open to trauma or make them perpetrators of trauma. Prof. Vervaeke is someone who cares and offers real solutions.

One of the answers is structured meetings. Racism is more prevalent in more mono-cultural societies. Situations where people unite around commonalities can be helpful.

Beautiful! 🙏🏽 At present i'm waiting to pounce (or rather walk in gently and tread carefully) on any opportunity to initiate a more or less entire-parish based learning formula; cannot anyone learn from anyone? This would go hand in hand with establishing many small permaculture gardens/forests around the parish. The Bogomils had a beautiful system going despite being hunted down and burnt at the stake by the then-'civilisation'. All the best of spirits to y'aal for 2022, come what may 🌳🕊💚
