I would go into IR if most places had the protego. Hopefully over the next 5-10 years there is a huge wave of adoption.
Wow what a great program.
What about the Radiologic Technologists? I've been in the field for over 30 years as well, now semi retired. I spent about 5-6 years in Interventional Radiology and the Cath lab, the rest has been in CT, Trauma and OR.
th-cam.com/video/Xe6VqJkKlGM/w-d-xo.html Go to about 20 minutes in - Radiology pioneered many of these techniques, but once it got into other discipline's hands, there was far less fundamental training in radiation safety.
There are many types of aprons that are no longer made of lead but are equivalent to lead. They are much lighter.
The Superstition Wilderness is MUCH more beautiful!
FYI the people doing the Radiographic exams are trained as long as a RN, pass a certification board, maintain a license, do continuing education and are subject to professional discipline. It would be nice to be called by our proper title. Radiologic Technologists or Radiographers. Would you call a Doctor or Nurse a healthcare worker? Then call us by our earned professional title- especially when reporting on issues related to our occupation.
Radiologic Technologists are so unknown, even in a show about their jobs LOL

Radiology Techs and Cardiovascular Technologist
Rod Adams' commend, below, is very pertinent. Very recently the American Dental Association changed its standard of care rules for dentists, declaring that THERE IS NO NEED to give patients lead aprons or thyroid sheilds,. In effect acknowledging what is proved beyond any doubt by all major studies of the biological effectgs of radiation on humans done over the last 100- years: Radiation is harmless to humans for all but staggeringly high dose (and rapid) exposures. The ADA even explicitly stated the radiation from dental x-rays is SO entirely totally harmless there is no good reason to offer lead shields to pregnant women receiving dental X-rays. To be sure, cath lab health care workers have a higher radiation exposure than patients getting dental x-arys. Indeed, their radiation exposure is higher than that of any other medical care givers. But that exposure still is in most caes well below that whichi can be expected to cause ANY risk acute or down the line harm. Rod's suggestion that intellectually honest and competent study of their(cath lab workers) particular situation is HIGHLY likely to show that the lead they wear... or at least the amount of lead they wear... is ENTIRELY unnecessary is very cogent. What is particularly disturbing about this series is that it repeatedly engages in anecdotal single case reporting, and never once cites a competent medical study of the biological effects of radiation EXCEPT to dismiss the single most respected and biggest such study... one that involved thousands of people exposed to radiation who were followed... and compared to well matched controls... for 50 or more years: The Hiroshima Nagasaky LSS study. This series has all the familiar hallmarks of baseless hysteria mongering regarding non-existent radiation dangers, and promotion of junk science.
It is near certainly indicative of this presentation being junk science and quack medicine in that NO WHERE is there any mention of (or reference to where one can obtain such) the dose of radiation the speaker was exposed to. It is also strongly indicative of the this presentation being junk science offering malignant falsehood that they >explicitly< REJECT information from the biggest and best studies of the biological effects of radiation on humans (such as the LSS ... Life Span Study of Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors) and SUBSTITUTE individual testimonials and one person case reports. This series on radiation appears to me to be primarily yellow journalism and misleading hysteria mongering. The methods presented here are an insult to intelligently and intellectually honestly conducted investigation of science and medicine. It is especially shameful and unforgivable that the speakers HAVE had extensive medical and scientific training... yet choose to engage in such irresponsibly offered, faith based, evidence-rejecting hysteria mongering to the public. What IS true is that inteventional cardiologists DO have the highest radiation exposure of all medical professionals. What is ENTIRELY FALSE is that dosages of radiation they encounter can POSSIBLY cause skin lesions, or even significantly affect risk of getting cancer. By the way, other professional medical bodies are gradually coming to realized what malignant falsehood is the claim of danger from radiation. A few months ago the American Dental Association changed its recommendations to dental professionals, saying that a lead apron and/or lead "thyroid shield" SHOULD NOW NOT be offered to patients. EVEN to pregnant women patients. Acknowledging (at elast implicitly, if not explicitly) at last that radiation in these amounts is ENTIRELY harmless. DO NOT believe the malignant falsehoods offered in this series of videos, PLEASE.
1- The radiation exposures of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors accounted for acute radiation exposure (a lot of radiation at once). This documentary involves long-term chronic exposure to low-level radiation, the effects of which are widely unknown. This is why the Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivor studies are not transferable to occupational exposure in the cath lab. 2- Yes, interventional cardiologists have the highest radiation exposure of all medical professionals. 3-The linear non-threshold model extrapolates cancer risk from acute exposures and correlates to low radiation exposures. However, this does not account for chronic low-level radiation exposure. Further, we should emphasize that we are unaware of the effects of chronic low-level radiation exposure. These radiation exposures may or may not be the cause of cancers. Still, since it is unethical to experiment on humans with the intent of causing harm, there is no large-scale data to prove or disprove the documentary claims. This is what leads us to rely on individual testimonials. 4-Dental professionals (and X-ray technicians) have decided to forego using lead aprons on patients because the radiation that goes inside the body for imaging is likely to be reflected back into the body as it escapes because of the lead apron, thus increasing the patient dosage. In accordance with ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable), it is reasonable not to use lead aprons for patients because they lower the radiation dose for the patient.
@@lancersmith7020 Tho it's convenient to make up your "facts" when the evidence entirely contradicts your faith-based assertions, it's neither honest or helpful: You suggested that harm was caused to Hiroshima and Nagasaki survivors (and by implication many others, as well due to the effect of "low level radiation". Effects you claimed are to this day "not well known". All of that entirely false, and contradicted by the overwhelming majority of evidence / studies of the effects of radiation done over the last 100 years. Thus I know I'm dealing with one who is either a true believer, going by ideology, not intellectually hoenstly and properly gathered scientific and medical evidence, or one ignorant of how truth in science and medicine is determined. I''ll exclude the third possibility... that you might be a deliberate and cynical deliberate liar... as a matter of courtesy. As I do not know who you are. Tho the anti-nuclear movement was founded by many such (especially notably the malignant quack MD Helen Caldicott, and the dishonest junk scientist (also winner of a Nobel Prize) Herman Mueller. The fact is that it's been WELL KNOWN and proved beyond a shadow of doubt (at the level of certainty that we know the earth is round, not flat, or that species arose by natural selection over billions of years, not divine creation 5000 years ago) that radiation is entirely harmless (at worst... it may in some cases be beneficial, decreaing risk of getting cancer and infection via "hormetic" processes) below IMMENSELY HIGH threshold levels. The studies of Hiroshima / Nagasaki survivors proves this unequivocably, as does the 50 year follow up studying the famous "radium girls" (those who, for FIFTY YEARS, painted watch and instrument dials with radium-containing self-illuiminating paint, followed medically in a huge study that went on for 50 years) ... to name two of the best and most important studies. There's also the study of those downwind from atomic bomb testing (who had LOWER cancer rates than the general American population) and of those exposed the infamous Goiania incident in Brazil. ALL of these show how ENTIRELY harmless... at worst... radiation is in other than truly massive doses... doses so high that very very few of the 9 billion on this planet have ANY chance of encountering such. I'm talking dozens to hundreds. It's a pity you appear to have been brainwashed by those who, often, are funded by the fossil fuel companies, who spend tens of millions bankrolling dispensers of lies about non existent "dangers of radiation"" That industry KNOWS that the ONE thing that can remove demand for their product is nuclear power, that "renweables" are a fraud that locks in demand for natural gas power plants to "back up" this worthlessly intermittent fraud, and that pushing baseles fear of harm from radiation is one of the most effective ways of combatting a rational energy policy program with respect to greenyhouse gas emission and global warming. Not to mention the heath impact (200,000 to 1,000,000 killed per year world wide) of using fossil fuel ... especially coal... to make electricity. By the way... I'm a far leftist, a life long fighter for social justice and for free quality health care and good publich health serv ices for all, and a Harvard-trained scientist, and an MD who has studied the biological effects of radiation for years. What are your qualifications to distinguish between quality and garbage "research"? I have decades of such. ---marty
@@lancersmith7020 The fact you are NOT CITING quantity of DOSEAGES (whichi are trivially easy to measure, and well known) is proof you care only to cite menaingless double talk, and fear anything that is solid science and math and medicine that contrdicts your faith in radio-phobia. The claim that lead aprons "relfect x-rays" and "increase dose" is PURE BS. As, by the way, the cited explanation that the aprons can cause bad images to be made and thus require another "dose". You are, tho, I must say, very good at spewing seemingly scientific and medical comments that in fact are PURE DOUBLE-TALK. I should knkow how to recognize such, having been in solme of the world's most respected academic and medical institutions, where the faculty and staff often are world class masters of such. Again, the bottom line is dose... which is trivial and harmless in the case of all dental and medical imagining x-ray exposure... and the fact that, due to WELL UNDERSTOOD repair mechanisms at the molecular and cellular level, repeated low doses of radiation ARE NOT AT ALL CUMULATIVE. You go back to sqqure one within 12 to 24 hours after other than staggeringly high radiation doses. You probably don't know a sievert from gray from rem from a rad from a Becquerl. I've spent years studying this sort of thing... and the medical implications thereof.
LNT is pure bunk. There is not a shred of evidence in intellectually honest quality research supporting it, and all major large and high quality studies prove it hugely monstrously wrong. Believing in that fraud is as deadly as belieiving in other frauds of science and medicine of the past, such as the claim blacks have inferior intelligence, or gays like molest children and are mentally diseased. Indeed, LNT is one of the two or three biggest, mostl widely bleived malignant lies in all of the history of science. (I studied the history of science when I was at Harvard). You also are confused about this business of "acute" vs "chronic" exposure. It's obvious you have little medical training or knowledge... in general and especially with respect to biological effects of radiation. Again... I'm an MD and scientist who has studied this at length. A given dose, rapidly acquired, can be 10 to 100 times more harmfujl than the same total dose, acquired slowly continuously over months and years. LNT of course denises the basic trutyh, and merely claims a slowly acquire dose is at most 1/2 harmful as the asme dose acutely acquired. But the fact is it's all a matter of whether or not repair mechanisms (which LNT is PREDICATED on DENYING the EXISTSNCE OF!!) ... mechanisms well understood now... are or are not overwhelmed. You don't seem to udnerstand this basic fact of biological effects of radiation on humans. You really come across to me as did medical colleagues in the 70s who believed homosexuality was a mental disease requiring treatment... one who oeprates on faith, not based on evidence.
A better, more data-driven understanding of the relationship of radiation dose and health effects would help avoid the harms associated with wearing lead shielding. It's possible that the protection being offered is not worth the more easily proven harm of wearing heavy shielding.
Well said, Rod!
Re: comments made around min 17 regarding what we know about radiation - If there are millions of procedures done each year, and thousands of physicians and support people being monitored for dose as they perform those procedures, why isn't there better statistical data available than studies that rely on unmonitored exposures from Hiroshima and Nagasaki?
The data is available... you just don't know... or don't want to know... the relevant facts. Typical of a true believer, not one who cares what the evidence shows. People like you pretend any evidence (in this case, HUGE amounts of such) that contradicts their on faith belief is to be ignored. Radiology workers since the 50's have LOWER cancer rates than the general population.
This series is wall to wall malignant and gross falsehood concerning radiation. Speaking as an MD who has spent years studying the biological effects of radiation, I can say this episode and this series is one malignant , deadly, factually uttterly false bit of hysteria mongering about radiation after another. What you are told in this episode and this series is contradicted entirely by EVERY SINGLE ONE of the major studied of the biological effects of radiation done over the last 100 years. For the record, cancer rates among medical workers working with X-rays are NO DIFFERENT from that of those who do not work with X-rays. The shamlessly mis-informing physician presented in this episode SCRUPULOUSLY avoids referring to actual high quality studies of radiation and medical personnel. Insteadl, in the fashioin of all liars and frauds and fools on this subject, prefers to present individual assertions and testimonials. The fact is that radiation is ENTIRELY HARMLESS to humans in other than staggeringly high doses. While an individual photon or beta or alpha particle can damage DNA, life... evolving agianst a background of conttinuous radiation, has evolved numerous means by which this acute damage is 100.00% totally repaired within 12 to 24 hours. Thus, all but massive doses that overwhelm such repair mechanisms are harmless, and repeat doses, if under a hugely high threshold, DO NOT ADD UP, because 12 to 24 hours after exposure to ionizing radiation one is BVACK TO SQURE ONE. Thus, repeated doses of radiation (other than ones so staggeringly huge that near no one has any chance of being exposed to such) DO NOT cumulatively increase risk AT ALL. This has been demonstrated over and over and over... in study after study... over a period of many decades. it is as solidly established today as it's proved the earth is round, not flat. Another thing that reveals the physician speaking in this episode as either a liar, fraud, or profoundly ignorant individual governed by faith and dogma, not science and evidence. is that he... and NO ONE ELSE in this presentation... once mentions specific quantity of dose. You can be near certain anyone who fails to mention so crt6icallhy important a thing as the doses involved is a liar or ignorant fool... or a paid shill of the fossli fuel industry (which know that nuclear power is the one thing that can remove demand for their product). At one point in this episode a woman engages in a particularly contemptible and sleazy bit of conveying hugely misleading falsehood , using the time-honored technique of hysteria mongering the more sophisticated of yellow journalists employ: selective neglect of data combined with cherrry-picked truth: She states that when one is exposed to small doses of radiation these get repaired. This is true. She also states that if the dose is high enough to overwhelm the repair mechanisms, harm results. This, too, is entirely true. But what this malignant lying hysteria monger fails to mention is WHAT safe vs potentially harmful doses art, despite the fact these are EXTREMELY well known. And she doesn't mention how those known numbers for doses that are harmless vs potentially harful compare to the specific doses medical workers receivwe, daily or over the course of a year. She doesn't do this BECAUSE if she did, it would be abundantly clear her contention that "twice the dose received by nuclear power plant wokers" (their words) presents a risk to doctors working with X-rauys is an over the top MASSIVE falsehood. While radiation is for all practical intents and purposed proved harmless, misguided fear of radiation of sort this junk science and quack medicine series presents is irresponsible and ignorant (to be as kind to them as I can be) ... and hugely deadly. 2000 Japanese were killed by a 100% needless hasty evacuation from the environs of Fukushima, in the face of the UN WHO and other independent researchers reporting AT THE TIME that there was ZERO risk of ANY sort of people having a greater chance of getting cancer immediately or years later, given the extremely low doses of radiation recorded. 100,000 to 200,000 women in Europe had abortions of otherwise wanted pregnancies because fear mongers of the same sort as those producing this contemptible series of videos told them a "plume of radiation" was headed for them from Chernobyl, and they elected to abort their pregnancies fearing their babies would be born physically and/or genetically deformed. When this "plume" of radiation was a small fraction of normal background radiation, and 1/.10,000th or less the amount of radiation that pregnant survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki experience, and yet all those women delivered babies with ZERO evidence of any harm (compared to well matched controls). The babies were follows FOR FIFTY YEARS, as were the controls, and IN NO CASE was there any evidence of the SLIGHTEST increased risk of ANYTHING referable to radiation. Again, this with exposures to doses of radiation OVER 10,000 times that which these European women experienced from the "plume of radiation wafting toward them from Chernobhyl". Martin H. Goodman MD
I'm not trying to start any arguments nor do I have any ill intent, I'm just purely curious. Could you refer me some of the studies you are referring to?
Great serious. Thank you for the information and your services!
This is a very important issue. Thank you all for doing what you do. You truly are heros! My son is one of you! 🙏🏻💜
Wonderful series. Thank you for trying to bring this subject to light. The change will have to come from the money makers for the Hospital Systems. That is YOU physician. You have the power.
As I have always said, the medical people are an incredible combination of intelligence and stupidity. DUH! Yeah you gotta fix this.
Thanks for producing and releasing this series. As one who works in a lab, it increased my awareness and willingness to advocate for more safety.
Thank you for this series. ❤
"Nurses and patient care techs".... even in a video about radiology.. they still can't get our title correct. RADIOLOGIC TECHNOLOGIST.
Awesome information so we'll done thank you for caring for others
I worked in cathlab for about 12 years. We had two co-workers die from cancer. One had brain and the other had eye.
And how did the number of cancers of cath lab workers ... in a large well-constructed study with a well-selected control population of other non-X-ray exposed medical workers ... compare to that a matched control population? Indibvidual case reports are one of the most common techniques used to accomplish hysteria mongering and to suggest falsehood.
Great video !
I see nothing great about a video that has about one big factual lie (or monstrous falsehood) in near very sentence.
Seriously? After all these years of research showing how dangerous modest radiation doses are NOT, you are still trotting out the same old hysterical paranoia? Why don't you have an expose' of the estimated 8 million people who die every year from fossil fuel pollution alone? Then compare that with the death toll from radiation. There is absolutely no way you can avoid the natural radiation in our environment; shall we all build lead bunkers to avoid increasing our probability of dying from cancer from 20% to 20.01%?
I moved to Arizona from N.C. about 2 years ago. Everything in the desert is so fascinating to me - the animals, plants, history, sky. It is truly beautiful. I go hiking as often as possible to commune with this beautiful land and all the gifts it offers.
my bucket list!
Ian a native of Tucson and still love the sound of the birds. Right now waiting for monsoon rains due sometime this month. There’s nothing that compares to the smell of wet creosote❤
I am a native and enjoying this video with the cactus wren calling in the background.
Fantastic Mule deer footage.
Awesome video 🌵🌵🌵🌵❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
From West Saguaro Park...Tuscon would be East, not west!
Its not even the deepest water canyon in America! It's beautiful, yes. But calling it the Canyon of all canyons is incorrect
My saguaro has brown wooden looking callus , I think is something wrong but I can identify the problem. How can I send u a pic so u check it out ?
Beautiful and peaceful place,I was there in January.
I live right next to that desert cool😊
Beautiful desert. In all of parts of America continent there are many areas like Sonora desert like Chile, Peru, Northeast of Brazil, North of Mexico. ln all of that habitats there are many cactus species .
Very nicely done!
in 3 months I'll be running 13.1 miles through it. Can't wait.
Wow, My best friend, Wonderful video dear. I enjoyed watching. Hope to see you soon...
I was lucky enough to see the Sonoran desert right at the tail end of an unusually heavy monsoon season. The absolute abundance of wildlife was incredible.

So... no wind muff?
Making a video is not easy... catching and filming wildlife is not guaranteed and for someone interested about maybe visiting someday this video will do just fine.
It was one of my lifelong dreams to visit the Saguaro National Park (actually to see the Cactus up close and personal) and it finally happened in August of 2021. Hope to come back some day soon
