In October of 2015, I was in Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. A pride of lions had killed a baby elephant the day before next to the water hole and were relaxing nearby, guarding the carcass.
I thought the elephants were nervous due to the presence of the lions, until I realized that there was a baby elephant trapped upside down in the water trough, right next to the pipe where the water came out. National Parks was advised of the stuck youngster, but while they were organizing their rescue effort, several hours passed.
During that time, we watched the frantic mother try again and again to pry the youngster out, unsuccessfully. She was also doing her best to keep the other elephants away from him, but this was during a heat wave in the dry season and everyone was desperate for water, so they pushed back. Her backside was covered in wounds from where they had pushed her off forcefully with their tusks. But as you will see, she still persevered - approaching them with her backside, in order to minimize the damage.
At a certain point, I saw another elephant herd arriving at a break-neck speed, faster than any others had approached. They ran straight past the pride of lions and almost immediately, the matriarch immediately mounted her own rescue effort.
While you watch this video, also keep an eye on the rest of the family - who work together to keep the mother from interrupting the rescue effort - you will be able to recognize the mother as the one approaching walking backwards! The others eventually drove the mother off. After 5 minutes of continually trying, failing, and reassessing, she managed to free the calf, and the rest of the herd returned immediately, trumpeting with joy.
After several minutes of calming the baby down, the matriarch separated him from the rest of the family and somehow gave the OK to the mother to come collect him!
My apologies for the video quality - this was all shot on my iphone!

God gifts elephants 🙏🙏🙏small elephant stuck finally rescued family elephants🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘🐘 🙏🙏🙏
Elephants are so loving animals!
It is the best of the best videos I ever watched ! The Matriarch rushed to save the baby as she new, got a message from stressed Momma and brought her herd, organised EVRYTHING ! to save the baby. None of her herd approached to the water and waited patiently (doing their job "told" by the Matriarch). The communication between elephants is amazing !!! They can hear the sound, call for help through a log distances...
Police force please take the herd of elephants to the police station properly excellent
Incredible rescued from the matriarch and the herd! Elephants are so intelligent!
Beautiful! They are such intelligent animals!
Thank you for this video .a lucky little baby and a happy mom. 💗💞💕
🙏🌺🙏🌺🙏🌺🙏🌺🙏🌺🙏
Why is it so hard for them to get it out? It's not like it's 20 ft deep? Seriously these animals are so uncoordinated and clumsy it unreal. They seem stupid too
My 🦁 lions were ready to lunch 😂
Leave Rose Bowl, Bulldust out of This!! Rose Bowl Suck's.
Wow So Beautiful 😍 "not like evil man" From Zimbabwe 🇿🇼 and USA 🇺🇸..🌍🌎🌏🤩🥰
Elephants are such amazing and smart animals but things they do to protect their own family is unbelievable
Great rescue! Sadly completely ruined by the scrolling commentary and then the banner at the bottom covering the baby ellie! Terrible!
Esto tiene que ser INTELIGENCIA!!!! De dónde aprendió????? Re cursiva!!!! Mi profundo RESPETO ADMIRACIÓN son MAJESTUOSAS!!!! Wow ❤️❤️❤️🐘❤️❤️❤️😊
Thank you for wonderful and amazing rescue.
The MATRIACH IS AWESOME..SUCH A GOOD JOB OF RESCUE..HIGHLY INTELLIGENT..
I LOVE THIS VIDEO..ANIMAL WORLD IS FILLED WITH INTELLIGENCE AND CARE AND LOVE..THEY ARE SO BEAUTIFUL..❤❤❤🐘🐘🐘🥰🤩
The matriarch is very wise. She took some water from the trough with her trunk and sprinkled it around the baby elephant's head before she proceeded to free the baby's head from the muck. She also made good use of her trunk and tusks in freeing the baby. The way she wrapped her trunk around the baby's front leg securely to pull it up bespoke of experience. The other elephants from the herd did not drink until the baby was out of the trough. They waited patiently by the trough while some of them kept the mother away from the baby during the rescue. This herd of elephants is AMAZING.
Nice and hatss off to that elephant mother 🙏
This is why elephants need their tusks. I see them saving babies all the time with them.
This has to be one of the best baby rescues I have seen! Marvelous how they it worked out!
可愛的象寶寶,與媽媽互動很有趣🐘🐘~❤
💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
Finally, I get to see the original. Many others have posted just the clip of the rescue. Fascinating dynamics at play, here.
Wonderful!
This video really demonstrates the individual character of a matriarch. Much like humans their character can vary. The other elephants were merely aggravated at the mother, whereas this matriarch showed great compassion for the plight of the distressed mother and her calf. Exceptional footage!
I thought the had brought the chil out but not..
I know we tend to see animals' behavior through human experience, but it almost seemed as though, through their trumpeting, they called the more experienced older female to "come quick, we need you". The complexity of animal life is so beautiful - I get emotional.
The leader the big boss the big 💪 matriarch god bless her always she portrays immense strength she will not give up without a fight in everything she does is fully responsible for all the precious lives she have around her 💙 ❤ 💜 💖 😊 💕 💙 ❤ 💜 💖
Wow!!! So much left to learn from nature
Los animalitos son las cosas mas linda de este planeta
The video was so good I had to watch it twice. Thank you
What a fantastic video,of elephants saving a bady elephant, and done a great job
I watch these videos all the time, but this has to be the best rescue I have seen. To see her run in and go right to work to save that poor baby, not just from being stuck, but from the lions that would have killed the poor baby. What joy this brought my heart.
A baby being bored, adorable. 💘💘💘
I liked the baby's interaction with the big sister!
🙏🙏🙏❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😘😘💋💋💋💋🐘🐘🐘
E VIVA OS ELEFANTES ... E VIVA A VIDA ...
This is absolutely fascinating to watch. How they think, work together, above all their intelligence. I wonder how old the matriarch is? Thank you for letting us into their lives.
This is so human behavior!!!
Why would anyone thumbs down this video? Boggles my mind
Excellent. If only people would design and plan better then as great as the compassion shown is maybe the Elephant would not be having so many problems?
a heart filling video...elephant s are beautiful creations of god..so cute baby it was like human baby shaking their legs and hands
Oooo...super cute baby..and good commentary...enjoyed it
Hi. Sir please helping baby elephant. Stuck. You can helping baby stuck out. Mother pull out. Help. Baby. Thank you. Janice
This was utterly amazing to see! I have so often SCREAMED inside "use the trunk, USE THE TRUNK DAMMIT"! when I've watched rescue attempts by elephants. And here she is, lifting the calt by its leg with her trunk, and literally lifting it by its neck with her tusks out of the trough. This also sort of shows the tragedie of poching. Its the oldest, with the biggest tusks they kill first, and with them goes the wisdom, knowledge and experience of the heard. Fantastic to see, thank you for showing.
Amazing
WOW, THAT WAS AMAZING!!!!
👍👍😚lovely ending
