Into the Eye: A Father-Son Journey to Elephant’s Eye
Join us on an unforgettable adventure as my son and I hike to one of Cape Town’s hidden gems-Elephant’s Eye, nestled in the stunning Silvermine Nature Reserve. Starting at the foot of Constantiaberg, we embark on a 6 km hike filled with breathtaking views, peaceful trails, and a journey of discovery. From the serene sound of a small waterfall along the path to the sweeping vistas of the Cape Peninsula, this hike is a perfect blend of natural beauty and quiet moments.
We stop at an old fire lookout hut, once used to monitor wildfires, offering an incredible vantage point over the landscape. After a brief rest, we tackle the final, steeper climb to the Elephant’s Eye cave. Inside, it’s like stepping into another world-ferns growing from the cave’s walls, water dripping from the ceiling, and a sense of calm that only nature can provide. The cave, carved into the mountain’s face, truly resembles an elephant’s eye watching over the Cape.
This hike is more than just a journey-it’s a shared experience between father and son, capturing the bond that outdoor adventures can bring. With stunning drone shots, scenic paths, and a magical ending inside the cave, we hope this video inspires you to explore the beauty that lies in your own backyard.

    In low range ESP is not working. 🙂 Traction control is working and not just working but become more agressive to try to give your SUV as even power to all 4 wheels in different situations as posible, put your Pathfinder on 3 rolers and it will get out of there just fine in lowrange (with ESP off) 🙂 "Traction control is not the same thing as ESP. It is usually controlled by your ESP but it serves a different purpose. Instead of stopping your car from sliding or spinning in corners, traction control is - as its name implies - designed to give your car's driven wheels more traction under power."

    • @4x4ViewFinder
      @4x4ViewFinder 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello there ivar. ESP uses a system of various sensors to detect if the vehicle is on the verge of losing control. The system works via wheel speed sensors, steering angle sensors, and yaw rate sensors, to monitor the vehicle's speed, direction, and the driver's steering input. All of which help to keep the vehicle in control. The nature of off roading is uncontrolled. You want it off because by the time the system reacts to conditions sensed in a specific point in time, less than a second later conditions have changed again. The lagg in mechanical as well as electronic tolerences actually cause the vehicle to perform very poorly off road with the traction Control/ESP [in Nissan vehicles] I have physically experienced this over the 100s of 4x4 routes i have done over many years. My Fortuner i have now, works exactly the same. I Switch off the traction control when doing the gnarly stuff. You can ask anyone who has done off roading with a miriad of vehicles over the years weather traction control/esp/whatever every other brand calls their system does better on or off, when off roading. The pathfinder can not swith off the ESP completely like say, the Fortuner can. The fortuner has 2 stages of traction control, partially of and fully of. The Pathfinder switches off partially. Meaning it is still active, but in a very minimal way. Meaning, at the crutial moment you need power to go up a sand dune, the car wont take the throttle away from you because the wheels are slipping. First we need to understand how the Traction control works before we can understand how it impacts our driving on the grave, mud, asphalt and rocks.

    hi i see you are from cape town i would like to know if my fortuner D4D 3.0 struggles to start if it can be the glow plugs.

    • @4x4ViewFinder
      @4x4ViewFinder 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there Craig. Well, it can be a whole lot of reasons why the vehicle wont start, most common reason is a deteriorated or wrong battery installed in your vehicle. Both will seem fine when you test them, but wont have enough CCA Cold Cranking Amps to start the vehicle. Bad Glow plugs will cause your vehicle to have very bad feul economy and will idle really rough, sometimes even smoke. But yes it could cause it not to start, but you will have a bunch of other issues before you get there though. Without some more info its hard to try and narrow down the cause. There are a bunch of other reasons why your van wont start buddy.

    • @craigcook7589

      @4x4ViewFinder after I bought my d4d fortuner I put a new battery in and did a service.

    • @4x4ViewFinder
      @4x4ViewFinder 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you do not have the right rated battery with the right CCAs your van will struggle to start and the colder the tempratures the worse it gets. You can potentially hurt the starter as well. But before you buy another battery just see if you can find someone with a similar van and ask to switch batteries and see if it changes anything.

    Good video, just a tip that I was taught is use a wheel nut to hold the disc while re installing the caliper and pads. Just one less thing to have to hold on to. I also use a smear of copper grease on the back of the pads.

    • @4x4ViewFinder
      @4x4ViewFinder 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanx bud. Great tip there. Im afraid to put any kind of grease on the pads, the heat generated by brakeing generally causes the grease to "melt" and become fluid. This then goes everywhere including the discs and could cause damage to the rotors or worse, cause you to lose braking at a critical moment. I know there is a very specific grease the use, but i still cant find it anywhere. Thank you for commenting and giving the great tip, i will be sure to use it in future. Keep safe bud.

    Decent video mate. This is almost exactly like my Flex Adventure 55L or the Alpicool fridges. The one covered here just looks like an older generation Flex. I thought Flex made their fridges here in SA so either I’m wrong in that assumption and this is a common platform companies are just branding, or if the design is Flex’s then they are selling the older generation under a different name?

    • @4x4ViewFinder
      @4x4ViewFinder 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey Arkonza, thanks for your comment. With the exception of Snowmaster, Engel and National Luna, basically any plastic fridge that you can get in our market is made in the East. Not sure which country exactly. But the companies buy stock of a generic type of fridge and then add their branding to it. I dont want to mention names but the two companies sell axactly the same fridge, all the way down to the app and battery it uses, just with diffrent branding on it. If you can find my Instagram, you can DM me and i will show you that almost all these fridges are generic. I was also mislead to believe that a certain brand's fridges where made in SA but found out that it is not the case at all. But thats business i guess.

  • @ijc9984
    @ijc9984 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    If I understand you correctly, the lit esp off light in 4low is normal. After a good reading of the manual I couldnt see any mention of this. Only asking as I've recently purchased a 2013 pathfinder manual box and was checking the 4wd system. Im very familiar with older analogue landrovers but this is the 1st electronic 4wd system I've experienced . It did take a little time for the 4low to engage and disengage following the correct procedure doing so in neutral and stationery. I had to move forwards and back a few metres slowly. From experience this could be because the 4wd has not been engaged for a while and was maybe slightly sticky. Thank you for your upload and clear information.

    • @4x4ViewFinder
      @4x4ViewFinder 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi IJC. Yes it stays lit to warn you that the system is not fully active. Its normal condition is to have the system fully active, in which case the light will be off. It works like this in almost all 4x4s which have traction control. In addition most 4x4 with an electronic engagement may need to move forward or backward slightly to engage the 4x4. If the gears are not aligned, moving the vehicle wil help it lign up and engage. So you are experiencing pretty normal charachteristics. Im so glad i could be of help to you. Hope you have an blessed day.

    Hi Mate i have a question my nissan navara d40 2011has the problem of mixing engine oil with diesel. Previous injectors were changed .please suggest what can be the cause. Nissan dealership boy told me to go to dpf cleaner which cost $1800.as dpf is clogged so oil is coming into the engine oil chamber as he told me.if i put 4 liter in engine it top up within a month.please suggest. Thanks

    • @4x4ViewFinder
      @4x4ViewFinder 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey buddy, without knowing the history of the vehicle it would be hard to determine the exact cause, but 9 times out of 10, your piston rings or your sleaves are shot. Feul is being forced in between the piston and the sleeve and ends up in your sump. That can cause a lot of problems invluding excessive smoke and the engine running hot. Please do not base a decision on what i have said. Im not a mechanic and my advise is just based on experience not fact. But it may be an avenue for you to investigate.

History is ;it was giving white smoke and lose power.I had it to machanic,he cleaned dpf with water and solution .i saw there was a lot of black stuff came out.then again i faced lose of power mainly on freeways when there is a bit of steep.the other machanic then changed injectors.then this problem start(mixing).i been to dealership they says clean your dpf.which i didnt do.my thinking is there is problem with some seal .machanic dont want to open as its his fault,he might not put new seals!(guess). I will ask my machanic if he can check what you told me. Salute for giving your valuable time and experience. Regards

    Why drive at 100kmph with a 4.0 v6? I honestly don't understand these okes who deliberately buy a 4.0 v6 then moan about fuel consumption it should not even be a discussion? Great video man. My Nav I get average 5pmpl then I'm driving it like your supposed to. That vvti loves revving. I have a mate with a 6 cruiser 4.5kpl and another mate with a jeep 5l v8 he gets 3kmp I get 5kmph and this is dicing each other and acting like lyties on the soft sand dunes. So Nav better than those two and evenly matched power wise also. Love my nav and don't even worry about fuel next mod is a 100ltr aux tank and maybe a supercharger if I can get one😂

      Hey Wayne, you are right, these vans are meant to be DRIVEN. The flip side of the coin is that for some they are more affordable than their diesel counterparts in purchase value, for them getting the best you can out of its consumption is worth a lot. Especially in this economic climate. I made the video with those folks in mind, helping them get the best out of their van. But even if you are a hypermiler as they say, I bet every last person on the planet who owns a 4.0v6 will and inevitably has,... squeezed that trigger,... I mean pedal, every now and then. Hahaha. Thank you for the compliment on the video buddy, glad you liked it. Thank you for taking the time to comment.

      @4x4ViewFinder Hay man. Yes I totally understand your point of value versus Diesel. Great point actually. These vans are great value for the money. If you have to calculate the difference in price and equate that to buying petrol and potentially not having a vehicle payment it is a no brainer. I put a 2 inch lift with ats this thing is a beast for 90% of offroad situations. We really push our vehicles here have access to huge sand dunes areas. Hi Sir I just want to know that when draining Oil on the 3.0 D4D Fortuner must it be parked on a flat surface or on a steep surface, because I suspect that it does not drain nicely when parked flat.

    • @4x4ViewFinder
      @4x4ViewFinder 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi sir. On a flat surface or a slight incline shoulf be fine. The nose should be higher than the tail. The position of the plug lends it to draining completely on either instances.

      Hi there sir. I would for sure, recommend these discs and pads. Ive had almos 40 000kms on them so far and they perform like they where put on yesterday, even with severe driving conditions, such as towing and off roading. They still have more than 50% left. I would say they out perform the OEM parts by a large margin.

      Hey Shaun. Thanknyou for the great remarks. I really apreciate it. First off, i wish i could help you. I made this video a bunch of years ago, and i had the schematics uploaded to YT thinking it should be there forever. In the intrum, i have changed PC's and won and lost data. Im pretty sure i dont have the original schematics. I also dont have the Pathfinder any more. So i cant even measure it for you. Sooo sorry my friend. Also as a result of your message i went and checked, almost all of my older videos, which i have shared PDFs and Documents have all been removed. YT changes their mind on things as often as the weather. Could be that it violated something somewhere in the YT ether.

    Great video bud! have you notice any performance improvements after doing this? cause im planning to do this as well since i have changed to a high flow air filter and remmaped it.

    • @4x4ViewFinder
      @4x4ViewFinder ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ivan. Thank you for your comment, well at the low end there was a very slight improvement. At the top end not so much. Because the turbo can now spool up from virtually no revs, it helps give some oomph down low. If however you couple that with a straight pipe, and a map after that, you may get some great gains.

    • @IvanDoesMTB
      @IvanDoesMTB ปีที่แล้ว

      @@4x4ViewFinder awesome! It already had performance filters and a remap.

    • @4x4ViewFinder
      @4x4ViewFinder ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome, just remember in future that you always leave your remap for last. You first do all your performance upgrades and then map. That way your engine is tuned to what you have upgraded. Otherwise, in most cases it negates your upgrades because your engine is running on old perameters and limits set by your previous map. A stage 1 upgrade always includes and is not limited to an exhaust upgrade, the next stage is a map. From there you change turbos and or intercoolers etc. After which you do a remap again. Unless you do all of this at once. A good dyno tuner will ask you if you have done an exhaust upgrade before they tune, as mapping always comes after that. You dont need to do an exhaust upgrade but 99% of people who opt for a remap, almost always want to do an exhaust remap for even more performance afterwards. A remap before an exhaust upgrade also has the risk of raising your EGT's and causing additional ware on your engine if you happen to tow or run the car hard. So i always suggest to do a decat and a straight pipe first, then do a map. Your engine will thank you.

    Thanks for great review. I have been told that this DAG is similar to Tentco Clamshell and they come out same factory. However this tent has different specifications and as far as I am concerned, more streamlined than the other. The DAG when closed is only 18 cm in height whereas the Tentco is 27 cm in height when closed. I think the extra 9 cm will affect fuel efficiency in long run. It is only R500 more so hardly much difference. Which do you think is better?

    • @4x4ViewFinder
      @4x4ViewFinder ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for your question @ronsfreespirit. You are absolutely correct. These RTT's are generic platform made in the same factory. The thickness of the base or topper vary according to the brand's requirements. The only diffrence is the materials used for the canvas and branding. Quality wise they are exactly the same. So it all comes down to availibility and preference. The DAG RTT is more streamlined and causes less wind resistance but the deeper Tentco version allows you to put you pillows and thicker items in the tent while traveling. So it basically boils down to user requirement.
