Behind the scenes video of the making of the automaton from Hugo. Produced by Savage Media and a selection of photos from Sociates Ltd. The automaton was created by Dick George Creatives Ltd. In total Dick George Creatives made 13 automata and 2 writing automata. Both 'writers' had the ability to draw the picture featured in the movie without the aid of any CGI or Special Effects.

I always thought automatons were cool, and after watching this movie, I have now gained a ever stronger determination to figure our how this one works.

It's amazing. I would like to see every move in multiple angles. How does it work? I need to know ever little part and how it come together and do that. I thought it wasn't actually drawing but pretending. This is amazing

Ahora pregunto, porque la maquina dibujaría esa imagen ya que la pelicula se realizo después, el autómata lo creo antes segun lo dice en la película o sea sabia que iba a filmar esa escena. No lo podia saber ni sabia lo que era el cine.

Interesting that it draws an illustration from a 1920s silent movie

Part of the story is focused on the rediscovery of Georges Méliès as one of the pioneers of the film industry. He filmed the movie that scene is from, and the automaton was based on actual automata horologists made (Hugo's father, uncle, and himself working with clocks) and sometimes magicians would use (Georges Méliès being an illusionist before film came along)

This was a disapointing video. I hoped for way more real inside information on the building and development. I love this automaton so much. Where is it now? How was it build?

I've always been wondering more about the automaton too since watching the Hugo movie. Look up "François Junod" he's an automaton maker who makes complex mechanical writing and drawing automatons very similar to the Hugo and Jaquet Droz automata.

Hi Christian, it was inspired by Jaquet Droz's automaton. type "jaquet droz writer" on TH-cam and you'll find it.

I've got a question. How was the 'memory' implanted to draw the drawing in of itself? Like I mean how did it know how the drawing it was meant to draw looked like if it doesn't have a brain basically? Was it designed in a way that it would follow step by step lineal routes to draw the drawing?
