Throwback from a year ago today! I recall getting up early that morning with a fantastic clarity of mind and knocking out this demo. It showed up in my Facebook memories today, and I still really enjoy it so figured it deserved a spot on the channel. Kick back and relax.

Playing around with some Karplus-Strong synthesis over top a bubbling bed of rapid fire textures and hyperstimulated beats. This track represents another step in my recent experiments with more complex and unorthodox song structures.

Trippy Stuff… miss making Music in fasttracker
Nice track!
I think this one is my favorite. I like the way it feels out of bass, sounds quite unreal. Cheers and subbed !
Greeeat piece, thanks 🙏👍
Thank you 🙏
Beautiful- thank you
Thank you for listening!
Polyend should really be giving you a shoutout for all this Tracker stuff, boss - you really are doing the Lord's work here! This one is absolutely lovely. The timings and pattern-lengths variation stuff is a really interesting and creative part of the Tracker set-up I think, and you're showing it off very effectively I'd say!
Thanks Joel! It’s one element of the PT workflow I realized I hadn’t fully utilized beyond easily divisible pattern lengths, or whole pieces consisting of the same odd length throughout. Mixing it up more intently and just sort of observing the way new parts emerge is something I can see becoming a staple of my work moving forward.
Top! Aux p'tits oignons👍😁
Thank you! Plenty more to come
there is a powerful message in this. I got it and that is what matters. Thank you.
Thank you for picking up what I’m putting down. Your words mean so much
That’s crazy but I like it 👍🏼
thank you boss 🫡

Very nice
More lovely tones and vibe! Thanks for sharing.

More lovely stuff ... you're really on a roll, aren't you? :) Keep up the good work man!
Liked at 20s in. It continued. :) I thought this had more of an early-Squarepusher vibe - though still very much its own thing, I just mean the kind of clanking jazzy rhythms ... really great work!
I appreciate the kind words! My mission as of late has been to strike some kind of pleasing balance between sonic complexity with more straightforward arrangements. Tunes one can deeply explore and get lost in or just kick back and float away with. Perhaps an EP or album on the horizon as well… I looked into the MetaModule! Seems pretty intense but I already know you’ll be able to accomplish great things with it. Best of luck to you at work and school!
wow
Really enjoyed this, a lovely kind of RDJ-album-era vibe. The ambient IDM mixture very much up my street, as you might have been able to predict. Keep up the good work boss! I know I've been experimenting with the AI stuff of late, but that's largely getting it out of my system. Some more "real" music from me coming soon I hope ... just busy getting ready for the new term starting at work, and then - separately - starting my PhD next month, so lots of pieces to slide into place. But I just got something called the 4MS Meta module (Loopop or Red Means Recording videos can explain) which I think is going to ride spectacularly well for me once I've worked her out...
sounds good. and u got the nord rack so good taste.
Nice compo cheers from Australia
Tickling the vagus nerve deliciously ... very gentle, soothing, tones from the JP-08 there. A really good, straightforward, demonstration of the Tracker as MIDI sequencer!
Not sure how I missed this before, but there we go! Really lovely stuff - the chill vibes promised in the title, but then some really excellent intricate work on the drums throughout for that delightful jungle flavour ... sounds really great. Keep up the good work man!
Nice one!keep it up
как то уж слишком просто для тебя... ты раньше делал гораздо сложнее и талантливей...
That’s fair and to an extent I agree it’s rather simple! At the end of the day I believe in letting tunes be what they are and not forcing things into a box so much. So even though this isn’t my most intricate or complex work, I still like how it turned out.
Lovely chill vibes, and a little gentle glitch texture in the beat ... very cool. I think my favourite thing is the kind of syncopated, shifting, notes from the bass, especially in the breakdown. It adds a very solid, 'human', kind of feeling I reckon. Keep up the good work, anyway!
That's awesome! The jazzy style sounds really human ... is this on the Tracker+ still or are you playing some of it live? I also enjoyed the stakeout-in-a-1970s-cop-film vibes to the video ... keep up the good work man!
Glad you dig it! This one was made entirely in Ableton - drawing in the beat and then playing the other parts live via MIDI. I tend to swing back and forth between only using the Tracker for a long time, then getting back into exclusively using the DAW, and so on. For me, periodically jumping workflows is essential to keeping ideas fresh. Always a treat to get your feedback, my friend!
@@jhooks That's awesome, thanks for replying. That makes sense, shifting workflows to keep things fresh, and definitely the extra level of detail and control you can achieve with the DAW can make a big difference. I used to think I stuck to the same, singular, workflow nearly all of the time because it was important to keep things possible for the potential of a live, non-laptop based, performance. However, on reflection I think the real reason I do it is just the autism! :)
Nice!!!
Loved that!
Really impressive! Probably my favourite one so far ... the synth line is very warm, and the soft fluttery beats underneath go very well. You seem to be getting on with the Performance mode too, which I've never quite warmed to as much (mostly because it doesn't really have the same effect when you're sequencing MIDI, which is about 90% what I use the Tracker for). Keep up the good work man!
Thanks so much, Joel! Most of the stuff I make with PT has been too chaotic on its face to be easily compatible with Performance mode, at least until I learn it better, and with this one I actually set out to engage in a somewhat conventional production for the express purpose of getting more familiar with those punch-in fx; means a lot that you’d notice and point that out!
Love the vibes 😎
Thanks for listening 🔥
Niiiiiiiiice, it's the first good IDM with PolyTra I listen to🎉🎉🎉
yo thanks so much! That means a lot
Ah, lovely. That takes me right back to my Uni days at the end of last century ... :)
Precisely the vibe I was going for! Having only been 4 y/o at the outset of the new millennium, I’m sometimes concerned about these kinds of tracks coming across derivative or overly nostalgic, since history lessons and only the very faintest memories are just about all I have to grasp on to from that period. It’s nice to know this one accurately evokes the era :)
@@jhooks Wait a minute - they taught you about Jungle music in history lessons?! We only learning about the Victorians ... 😁
как интересно!))) молодец!
glad you like!!
This is inspiring!
Sounds really lovely - delicate alongside intricate, never quite breaking out into something too intense but just orbiting around the edges somehow. Really great work with the Tracker as always ...
keep experimenting and sharing w us! you doing random note FX or baked in with fill?
Will do! Thanks for checking it out. Kind of a blend of the two. For real all over the place parts, I’ll start by filling in some random instruments and FX, usually all locked to the same note. Then it’s a matter of more deliberately refining what plays where, and then playing with pitches until it sounds interesting. Both the random and fill features are great to generate a jumping off point for ideas!
баса и ритма не хватает. в остальном - чудесно!
Thanks for listening! I’ll get a little more conventional on the next one 😉
this rips!! too good!!
Much appreciated!! hoping to include this one on an EP release before too long
Very cool! The beat is delightfully chaotic and meandering, which complements the gentle jazzy synth vibe. It's like I'm downloading some 60s soul and some Luke Vibert at the same time - but my modem is breaking up too (... you have to be pretty old to remember modems, sure, but there we go). The Tracker+ continues to do good work for you!
Thanks Joel! I actually do remember modems, perhaps a bit too well. My family had dial-up internet well into 2009 😂 thanks for checking it out, I always look forward to hearing your take on things. The analogy you made is a pretty spot on intersection of my tastes, and I’m glad to be able to channel that into my own work.
Lovely work! The more complex arrangement really plays out here, that definitely feels like something worth pursuing more (although I guess it's pretty complicated to achieve). That bassline is absolutely pounding too!
Totally banging, this is (originally misread the title, I did; amusing I thought it would be to talk like Yoda did I ...). Again, really impressed with what people like you pull out of the Tracker by itself. Reminds me of a couple of other quality acts here on the 'Tube you might not know - Metra Music and resyn_echo. They both produce excellent pure-Tracker; Metra is more jungle-y; resyn has a great line in more IDM/glitchy stuff. Anyhow, you might like it. Keep up the good work man!
much appreciated as always, Joel! I looked into the two channels you mentioned - really means a lot that you’d put me in with such talented folks. I especially enjoyed the varied visual content across the 5 or so videos I saw. Oftentimes for me, creating something that’s pleasing to watch as well as listen to is one of the larger hurdles, and both Metra and resyn_echo seem to have a real knack for keeping things fresh. I’ll be studying them more closely in the coming days
@@jhooks no worries, boss. I know what you mean about having something to look at... the WZRD continues to help me out there, but great to find your own way too of course.
Love it, also I know I'm late to the party but I just ordered a Polyend Tracker 😉🎶🎶
nice! I know there’s some pretty great deals on them right now since they announced Tracker+. hope you have fun, and thanks for listening!
@@jhooks thanks
This is, again, really lovely. I'm glad the algorithm put you in my direction. Easy sub. There is a non-zero chance you might enjoy some of the stuff I put out on my channel too, though it is a little more abstract/ambient so can't be sure. Anyhow, I look forward to listening to more of your stuff soon.
Hey, it’s great to have you here! I really appreciate the kind words as well. I worked mostly in ambient and experimental soundscapes for a long time before shifting more towards beats, so your channel sounds right up my alley! 🤘🔥
The Tracker is a fantastic IDM machine, and this is a great illustration of it in action! In practice I almost underuse it as mine is mostly devoted to MIDI sequencing (which it is also excellent for) but I still definitely rely on it for beats. Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! Having no prior experience with trackers of any sort, it was a bit of a learning curve but at this point it’s seriously the most crucial piece of gear to me. I don’t often utilize the MIDI sequencing functionalities, unless sampling external synths into the Tracker for further mangling - it plays great with my Nord 2x 🙂 are you using PT to sequence mostly hardware or soft synths? I’m checking out your channel now and am super curious about your workflow!
@@jhooks I appreciate Trackers do take a big of getting used to, but when they settle in I think they're especially useful for the kind of intricate control IDM/braindance/whatever involves. Having gotten very used to the Tracker now, I have a tracker in my Eurorack now (the Nerdseq) which effectively means the creature now has a second brain ... I need to experiment more with it, but it should mean co-ordinated polymetric/polyrhythmic loveliness pretty easily. The physical set-up is a great octopus of cables in the Eurorack, with the Polyend Tracker as the master clock control. That talks to a MID-CV module I have, converting the MIDI out from the Tracker into clocked CV and gate to power the voices and then control some modulation. Another channel is then effectively MIDI-Thru, which I use for the Iridium Core. As I expect you know, polyphony on the Tracker uses up multiple tracks (which is why I'm fascinated by the + they're just released...) so I have to be a bit inventive if I'm doing anything with chords. However, I do really like the MIDI Chord and Arp FX on the Tracker - they work really well. With beats on it it I tend to just load up a collection of glitch noises and actual drums, then spread them across the patterns with lots of Chance and Roll FX. When I use whole breakbeats I tend to use the Slice and Random Value FX so they come out differently even as the same pattern replays. That's probably all too long an answer for you, but that's the workflow in outline at least!
@@joelnicholson wow! Really appreciate the detailed breakdown. Your setup sounds fantastic. I was at a friend’s place a few weeks back doing some similar stuff controlling their modular rig, and indeed found the Arp effect in particular yields some really spectacular results.
