Could underprescribing antibiotics for UTI be contributing to antimicrobial resistance? 7News 2024
7 News highlighted urinary tract infection (UTI) in a national news story that aired on 28 September 2024 about the rise in antimicrobial resistant (AMR) infections. The story, featuring chronic UTI patient, Marilyn Clark-Murphy and Urological Society of Australia and New Zealand (USANZ) president, Professor Helen O'Connell AO, raises concern that prophylactic and short course antibiotic treatments may not adequately treat infections in some people. The under treatment of UTIs is becoming recognised as a possible contributor to AMR, but is rarely discussed.
