are you supposed to insulate the white pvc type pipes too? (or if it's not required, is there benefit to it anyway? or any safety issues or downsides to NOT doing that?)
I have moisture in my basement above my ceiling tile. I'm trying to insulate my ducks to prevent condensation. Is it okay if I just insulate the runs? And not worry about the elbow joints coming into the run?
I have some rigid duct that is up against the ceiling so i cant get behind it too easily and using a wrap is just practical. Is there an insulating paint i could brush on to help insulate my galvanized rigid duct?
Why is it unhealthy to have a home at a temp of 59 degrees???

We have 9 total mini splits in our house (we have 2 outdoor units to handle them). We are so happy with them...EXCEPT...2 of the mini splits are the ceiling mounted - which is in 2 upstairs bedrooms. There are no issues with the cooling feature, but the heat feature has given us problems for 3 winters now. No matter how low you set the heat temperature on the wall thermostat, the actual temperature in the room just continues to rise. It's a huge problem when we have guests. We have the heat set at 68 degrees, but after about an hour or so, the actual temperature rises to over 80 degrees. Then we have to just turn the unit off. Our installers have spent hours trying to figure it out, to no avail. Do you have any suggestions???
@@ToddCoston absolutely. Thank you for asking this is actually a very common problem with multi-zone design. If you can give me more information about the size of those two units how many BTUs they are and the rest of the indoor units connected to the same system then I need to know the model number of the outdoor unit that services all of these then I can get you some answers.
i have a hybrid split system and uses honeywell, will it be a 2 for the cooling stage? my previous thermostat broke and i replaced with an older version since it is cheaper. now it's blowing hot air with cool on. I dont know the model of the thermostat before bc i threw it away :/

I encountered these systems when I was in Cambodia, and I HATED them. They are DRAFTY. If you home currently has only baseboard heating, I and you want to save money, then they are good. However, in the long run, going whole hog putting in ductwork, installing a GAS furnace and a standard AC system will save you money, which is what I did 15 years ago, and I thank God I did. Natural Gas is 1/3 to 1/4 the cost per BTU than electricity to heat. My winter utility bill would be $200 more a month during the winter if I used a heat pump (which is what a mini-split systems are).
@@richinoregon you are making an excellent point! I think from watching utilities in different areas of the country and different states or even different countries across the world the recommendation might vary based on more unique markets where the cost of energy varies by a lot. It's always good to do a good energy evaluation prior to purchasing these to make sure that it makes sense. There's other benefits other than savings so there's a lot of things to consider when deciding what system to get.
@@cleanairheatingcooling4105 Here is another consideration. If you live in the desert southwest, AC may not be the best choice--an evaporative cooler may be. I lived for 4 years in Nevada and had an evaporative cooler (swamp cooler) for cooling, and they could get COLD. The outside air temperature would be over 100 deg F during the day (I was in the high desert) but the temperature of the air coming out of the ductwork was 47 deg F. The only power they consume is to run the fan.
@@richinoregon that's right. In the dry areas those work well!
I thought you use the spacer so the pipes doesn’t sweat.
@@benjaminmartin7702 that is a secondary benefit.
Do you have to remove the hanging straps and insulate below them then reinstall?
@@jaredzanelli7867 you don't have to. If you do so the hanging straps will crash the insulation that's reducing the auto value just below the strap. It's better to insulate around the strap as shown in the video.

How would you wrap duct work that is a square box under my mobile home my duct work is a flext tube from ac to metal box that runs the floor of my home
@@almann5798 usually that metal rectangular trunk runs the length of your mobile home. You may have one or two of those if it's a double wide. Typically those are already pre-insulated along with a subfloor and the membrane. Is another case for you? If they are exposed you can wrap them exactly the way I showed here. You may also use a different technique where you use a fiberglass insulation and staple the insulation to the subfloor after wrapping the duct so basically forming a u-shape.
@cleanairheatingcooling4105 yeah few of my vents are sweating and water is getting into the duct work so i was going to wrap them to see if that helps and see if it helps lower my bill some its a 92 mobile home ive own it for 5 years so do not know how it looks under there

@@rhodachandler4277 it's being a while since I had to do one of those so I can't tell you a whole lot through chat over here. It might be best to hire a local HVAC Tech who has worked on those
@@rhodachandler4277 what area do you live in?
All insulations work the same way. To achieve R value you have to "trap" an air space. Think of it this way - Let's say that you have a 3" thick piece of fiberglass insulation (duct wrap) rated at an R8 when installed correctly. If you take that same piece of 3" fiberglass and wrap it so tightly that it is reduced to 1" thick it is no longer an R8. Why?? You didn't remove any material right? What you did do was remove the air that is trapped within the fibers of the material. This reduces the R value. Reflectix reflective duct insulation doesn't have any fibers to trap air so you have to build an air space against the duct to raise the R value. The material used in this video is an R4.2 wrapped direct the the duct and an R6 when installed with a spacer. It is a double bubble, double reflective product that acts in three ways. 1. It is an insulation (as explained above.) 2. It is a radiant barrier reflecting back radiant heat at 96% which means that the air in the duct stays cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. 3. It is a vapor barrier which helps prevent your duct work from sweating. We also offer a big bubble material HVBB48075 that is an R6 applied direct to the duct and an R8 When installed with an air space.

The first thing you need to decide on a mini split is to find a reputable Refrigeration professional that knows that a mini split does not "pull outside air into the home" and it doesn't "take heat from the outside and bring it into the home." It does it through heat transfer with refrigerant. 😎
@@thehousedr4 That's right most mini splits don't pull air from the outside. There are some ceiling cassettes which do. But for the purpose of this video that was a mistake. Thank you for pointing that out.
Ty!
We just installed a new mini split. I was trying to check the temperature with a thermometer and it grabbed the probe and broke a couple fins off one section of the fan. It seems like the air is still blowing good on 5/6 of the fan. Do I need to replace the fan immediately or will it be ok to run it like this for a while?
