I dragged my (younger) wife & kid here a few years back on our way back from much further upstate NY, neither one gave a rats *ss about its historical significance. Finally at the end of the long dirt road, there it was, no plaques, signs or yuppie tourists lurking around taking pictures, just the iconic house and its lawn chairs exactly like it was nearly 60yrs ago. Simply surreal.

My car briefly got stuck in the snow outside Big Pink! Luckily I was able to shovel my way out. Next time I come for a visit I shall do it in the summer

You know, the first thought that occured to me as you drove down that road - which really isn't much of a road is it? - was a mental image of Richard Manuel gunning some sporty little number along the perilous confines of that Wittenberg lane. Small wonder RM totalled a few cars during their time there. And what a magical spot! I've been a musician for fortysix years, and the first thing that occured to me as you pulled up there was, 'you could make some great music there.'

I lived till I was 9 years old only 10 mins away from Big Pink. I’m 25 now so obviously this was all before my time. And I’m not to familiar with The Band other than the song, “The Weight”. But even still I find it really cool to think that song was written and rehearsed in a house so close to mine!

Any chance that’s the original siding paint job? The bottom masonry is surely redone.

I was just there! No signs, no attractions, no spray-painted rocks or anything. You can’t see j to the windows unfortunately or see inside. There’s now a fence on the right and I didn’t want to trespass and get yelled -at so I stayed in the driveway. I happened to be in Ashokan and drove up and found it. Same dirt road pull-off. Plain as anything but there, alright.
