My Grandfather's Axe
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 6 ก.ค. 2022
My Grandfather’s Axe follows a beginner woodworker’s journey learning the craft from her late grandfather’s tools. It’s about inheriting his carpentry knowledge by building with his very tools, all while adding her own unique mark. This channel is built on authenticity, highlighting the real mistakes and frustrations of the learning process instead of hiding them. From home renovations, to carpentry, to fine woodworking, join the genuine (often comical) journey of a beginner learning the trade!
Learning How To Cut An Octagon: Woodworking Skill Tree
Today I'm in the shop learning how to cut an octagon! This is the first step in my one-year plan to learn woodworking from my late grampa by recreating five of his woodworking projects.

Learning Woodworking from My Late Grampa - One Year Plan | Beginner Woodworking Skill Tree
มุมมอง 2399 หลายเดือนก่อน
I never got the chance to learn the woodworking from my late Grampa, but I'm not letting that stop me. Welcome to my one-year plan to learn the art of woodworking from him by recreating five of his signature projects, step by step. Each project is a chapter, laid out in my beginner woodworking skill tree: The AACBANO Apprentice. The Tree outlines the five projects from least to most difficult, ...

Nice
Wow those are a lot of expensive tools. I'm looking up tutorials on building my own desk and all these videos make me think it'll be too expensive to DIY just one desk.
I did use a few different tools in this build, but you could absolutely get by with just a circular saw for this! I completely understand tool costs can be a barrier. You could always try looking at second hand options in your area!
Ty for the scrap wood tip! I have hollow core doors too and wouldn’t have thought of this
You bet! I hope it comes in handy for you sometime!
I Like it! Copying this super cheap design.
@@shturmovik3033 Love to hear it! I hope it works well for you 🛠️
Does it lock?
It does! You can lock it completely or lock it so it only opens one way or another.
Look at how far you've come grasshopper. So proud of you...
Good starter catio and good for you for doing it yourself. Lots of thinking goes into these projects. I believe in time you will get rid of the wood chips as they are not comfortable to the cat, encourage bugs and mold and my cats decided anything except concrete blocks made a wonderful litterbox (yuck). Plus, they loved lounging on the concrete floor and the blocks were easy to set in (plus easy to clean). Also that screen just isn't going to last (again, speaking from experience). Good 14-16 welded wire works better. To make it more bug proof, you could add a garage door screen, or door screens (Velcro or magnetic) or even build separate framed screens that can be put in and out. Window screening alone will not keep the cats safe and other animals out and I found that even the pet screening did not stand up to determined cat claws. Best to you and thank you for sharing the whole build.
Nice job! Do you now have to put a sealer on it?
@@flutter1woodcraft Thank you! Luckily the product I used (Cutek Extreme) is essentially a colour and sealant mixed into one product so there's no need to add anything extra on top. More coats might be needed as it weathers though.
how do you get scraps to put themself away like that?
Thanks, I too watched the @SteveMaskery and am determined to make his model of box joint jig. I really appreciate your flexible adaptation of Steve's jig.
Thanks so much! I hope it's helpful when you go to build your own 🛠️
Screws holding the hinges to the 2x6s look a bit too long...sticking out the other side! otherwise neat solution.
Do you know if the max weight capacity for those hooks is the same if they are not attached to the ceiling? Kind of surprised her hook bent with that one bike. Usually they can hold at least 50 lbs.
No point in "suiting up" if your arms are exposed
And that's how you get asbestos.... good job
Good design!
Thank you!
That's great! Put some candlewax on the sole and get crazy pulling out some beautiful shavings, make you grandpa proud 😁🤙
Great tip! I keep some cheap candles out in the garage to use a lubricant for wood-on-wood connections. Sounds like I have another use for them now!
Do you have the plans some place i love this design, would love to build one
I'm so glad you like the video and design! I don't currently have plans (I haven't learned how to create decent ones yet), but I do have a link to my sketch up model that includes the dimensions. It's not the cleanest, but it should give you a good starting point! app.sketchup.com/share/tc/northAmerica/FgbTFIVMpGQ?stoken=L6o6OVLEDwFqPDTd-Av5tgxmHGkcvTT6n53oCBYh88wum5rzEi_XuuzzSkFlUo8i&source=web I should also mention I've noticed some slight racking with the current design, so you may want to include an "x" style cross brace for extra support. I'll be adding one on the back between the top brace and the standing platform on future builds. Hope this helps. Happy building! 🛠
Great job on your creative problem solving your grandfather would be very proud😊😊😊
Thank you so much! This means a lot to me.
Window mesh? He's one nail away from escaping
You do it faster
Too bad you didn't give measurements for this, you have a very solid thing going!
Don’t be an Axle…. Love it!
Great idea. I wonder if a board and hook for the lower wheel would add more stability?
Yeah, I bet that would work too! It might make it a bit harder to line everything up to get it on though. Luckily this has held up well, but you could totally try it with a second hook!
I like this...she points out mistakes.. I would have done the same mistakes and this gives you a heads up in what may happen. Good job....
Thank you!
good job! experience is the best teacher .
Thank you, I couldn't agree more!
How do you keep bees out?
I been making stuff for a few years now and my granddaughter has started to help me in My work shop, I really hope she continues to help I will show her this video to encourage her, Great job
That's so awesome! I'm sure you'll make great memories in the shop together.
Watched my uncle "weather" a pine plank wall with a section of log chain. Looked awesome after it was finished. Keep up the great work..
I love hearing memories like this 😊
A 0.2° error accumulated across 8 joints will leave you out by 1.6° on the final joint at assembly time. If you use your angle finder to set your chop saw angle instead of the wonky old gauge it came with, you might get a lot closer.
Yeah, I should have taken the time to fix it when I first noticed it, but at least now I know for next time! Also, it was a .2° error across 16 cuts, so I believe that would make it out by 3.2° altogether?
Yes, you're right. 3.2° accumulated error.
two methods i use to check for square is the 3 4 5 method and the pulling diagonals method, the first one is to check a corner and the second is to check a panel, to do the 3 4 5 method you pull from one corner 3 units in one direction and 4 units in the other direction, if the hypotenuse of those two marks is 5 units the corner is square, the pulling diagonals method is popular in deck building but i use it to make panels for shelves and tables, you pull a measurement from one corner to the opposite corner and then do the same thing on the adjacent side, if the two diagonal measurements are equal the panel is square, neither of those methods would of helped you here though with the shape of your panel, pulling measurements from zero and checking that they're equal was the right move
Wow, thank you for the great tips! As I get further into my learning/building journey I'm realizing _ just_ how important it is that my pieces are square, and knowing how to measure to check is half the battle! It definitely gets trickier with odd shapes like these panels though. Had I not yet rounded the corners I would had more reference points to work with. Thanks for your help!
Thank you so much for the video. It is just what I was looking for. My first grandchild was born in January, and my second is due in April. So I have some building to do. I have watched numerous videos and really like this design. It is very functional, safe, and durable. I was wondering if you had plans for the build. Lumber requirements and rough dimensions work for me since i will tailor it to my needs. There's no sense doing work someone else has already done. Love the video and will be watching for more. KEEP THE BUILDS COMING! Tom C. PS. You work like me. When an issue comes up, you re-engineer the problem and make it work.
I'm so glad you enjoyed the build 🙂 Big congrats on becoming a grandparent, too! I don't have any formal plans for the build, but I would be happy to share my (somewhat messy) SketchUp model. I did my best to include all of the dimensions you might need, but of course you can alter them however you see fit! I should also mention I've noticed a some slight racking with the current design, so you may want to include a cross brace for extra support. I'll be adding one on the back between the top brace and the standing platform on future builds. Hope this helps. Happy building! 🛠 app.sketchup.com/share/tc/northAmerica/FgbTFIVMpGQ?stoken=L6o6OVLEDwFqPDTd-Av5tgxmHGkcvTT6n53oCBYh88wum5rzEi_XuuzzSkFlUo8i&source=web
Great idea with the organizational board - lets you see big picture as well as helping set intermediate goals. For the circular cutouts on the shelf I think Kreg (and others) make a jig/device to attach to a router to guide the router to make circular cutouts. Looking forward to the series!
Thank you! I think it'll be motivating to have a visual representation of my progress. And thanks for the tip! I'll look into something like that 🙂
Looking forward to watching your adventure!
Glad to have you here!
Woah! Intentional practice is an AWESOME way to learn. Can't wait to see your "Grampa's Version vs My Version" reveal videos at the end of each project.
I can't wait either! Fingers crossed they turn out 🤞
You've got one heck of a plan going on there. You are on the road to success. I never dilly dally but I've been accused of lolly gagging...🤣
Thank you ☺️ I could probably get through projects a lot faster if I stopped dilly dallying, but it's just in my nature 😅
Look at how far you've come grasshopper...
Great seeing your problems & solutions as the project progresses. I noticed your successful test cut you box jointed edge grain rather than end grain. Those fingers will likely break along a grain line.
Thanks for your comment! You make a good observation. I did consider the potential weakness of edge grain pins, but ultimately decided that since I was using thicker box joint pins (1 1/2"), they would likely be strong enough to resist breakage -- that and the very healthy amount of glue and support from all 6 sides. I've been very pleased with how the cube has held up over the last year, but I will definitely consider grain orientation in future projects!
Enjoyed the video , keep it up . I find the background music distracting .
Thank you! I'll keep that in mind about the music as well. Is it just too loud?
I've watched a number of videos on this jig but loved yours the most! It takes you through the process with a level I can relate to. I also like the theme of keeping alive the skills from your relatives. And am heart warmed by working together with your dad 😊 Very nice job! Keep up the great work!
Wow, thank you for your comment! I'm so glad you found the video helpful. I try to keep my content accessible for everyone, so it's always nice to hear if I'm on the right track! Happy building 🛠
Love this And your making him so proud 🥹 ❤
I see a lot of wood around your house not trying to be creepy or anything lol do you guys live in a cabin?
Thank you for sharing your mistakes. A lot of creators don’t do this and it’s nice to see. ❤🫶🏻🙏
You know how to do woodworking and electrician stuff. you’re really outdo us girl 😂❤
This girls got talent
I love this tutorial style video Just tried it. Looks amazing. Made it for my, sister
That's awesome! I hope she loves it. Would love to see a picture of yours! 🛠️
😍
Oh my God, the before and after❤ Nice work girl I would be really interested. If you made a video on small DIY projects to help you get started in woodworking.
Great idea! I'm still a beginner myself so I would consider all of my videos beginner-friendly, but I'd recommend checking out my toy truck build as a starting point! th-cam.com/video/SwoCYF291p4/w-d-xo.htmlsi=dg_Ad0bqZGg-1VoC
Your sentimental value is inspiring❤
Thank you 🙏
The beginning peace sent me 😂 so true Also, just curious, but do you have any background doing this or is this all self-taught? ( no hate)
Thank you! I took a couple of woodworking classes in highschool, but otherwise I'm completely self taught! 🛠️
The stat motion is great BRB, just going to watch all of your videos. Love your style.❤
So cool don’t have a cat but very nice❤
