Periegete is borrowed from Koine Greek περιηγητής (periēgētḗs, “a writer of periegeses; a guide”), from Ancient Greek περι- (peri-, “peri-, prefix meaning ‘around, surrounding’”) + ἡγητής (hēgētḗs, “a guide”) (from ἡγέομαι (hēgéomai, “to lead”) + -τής (-tḗs, “suffix forming agent nouns”)), from περιηγεῖσθαι (periēgeîsthai, “to lead around”).
