2005.05.26 Wind Farm Off Arklow Coast
A new wind farm off the Wicklow coast claims to have the tallest turbines in the world.
Taoiseach Bertie Ahern officially opens a wind farm off the coast of Arklow in County Wicklow, which has the tallest turbines in the world. The farm consists of seven turbines located ten kilometres off Arklow’s coast.
The turbines are capable of generating the annual energy needs of sixteen thousand homes.
The largest off-shore wind farm in the world.
The designers of the wind farm believe that this type of green energy technology could be used to power the entire European Union.
The Taoiseach acknowledged that there was a need to develop wind energy in Ireland and plans to introduce measures to encourage investment in the industry.
The overall view from Arklow locals is that the turbines are welcome. Jim Rees believes that the turbines are a great navigational guide for boats as they are situated on sandbanks. Jim Hansen says that the waters are now coming alive with new life.
