Weave Krokbragd on a Rigid Heddle (Tidy Edges!)
This video shows a simple way to weave krokbragd on a rigid heddle loom with just a pickup stick. I also demonstrate a technique for achieving neat edges in Krokbragd without floating selvedges, which can also be used on a floor loom (or any other kind of loom).
Note: The wrapping method takes the pattern edge-to-edge for a very pretty front face of the fabric, but it is not reversible.

QUICK VERSION
Shed 1: Heddle UP, over-under with pickup stick
Shed 2: Heddle DOWN
Shed 3: Heddle UP, under-over with pickup stick
ABC or ABB color blocks:
Start every Shed 1 by wrapping the weft twice over the selvedge thread. No wrapping for weft picks in Shed 2 or 3.
AAB or ABA color blocks:
No wrapping. Just make sure that the very first pick of the block in Shed 1 goes all the way around the selvedge thread.

    What size loom is necessary to make saddle blankets? Is there a place to source patterns for saddle blanket weaving?

    • @wildgingerhandweaving4171
      @wildgingerhandweaving4171 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You'll need 36-45 inches weaving width, and you'll need a sturdy rug loom that's capable of weaving with a very firm beat. I don't know of a source for patterns, but it's not hard to create your own once you understand how the weave structure works. Perhaps I will put it on the to-do list to write up a little instructional booklet one of these days!

    • @wildgingerhandweaving4171
      @wildgingerhandweaving4171 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My biggest advice specific to that loom is that you should have a tapestry beater on hand if you want to try any kind of weft-faced weaving. It will be hard to get your tension tight enough and difficult to beat hard enough with just your rigid heddle. But it *IS* possible to get great results by packing down the weft with a tapestry beater every few picks. If you don't have a tapestry beater, you can use a fork - just attach some kind of weight onto it to make it heavy enough.

    I've done Krokbragd on a Rigid Heddle - larger, wider pieces using the "Crazy Shot" book. Now I've got a 10" Sampleit loom and can use this video for Mug Rugs. BUT I'm also going to try a second reed since the Sampleit has the slots for a 2nd reed. You should do that as a video!

    Thank you for this wonderful video. I am new to weaving and have trouble visualizing how it all comes together. I do not quite understand how the light blue crosses are not missing the left arm as the pattern on the right side of the screen only shows the weaving of the right half of that cross. There are only 3 sheds in the pattern but it seems to me there should be 4. What am I missing?

    • @wildgingerhandweaving4171
      @wildgingerhandweaving4171 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The pattern is determined by the combination of how you thread the warp and how you treadle the weft. I think you might be confusing the two as you try to wrap your head around it. When you set up the warp, you thread it in a pattern of 1232, 1232, etc. This has the effect of mirroring everything you do, which is what gives you the second half of the crosses. After it's all set up, when you do the weaving part, I promise you all you need is three sheds. My other krokbragd video explains how it works a bit more! th-cam.com/video/ttSZSqBbNZ0/w-d-xo.html&pp=gAQBiAQB

      Sorry to hear that! I wonder if this is what happened. There are two links in the video description. The first is an all-purpose post that gives generic directions for threading the loom for *all* of my mug rug patterns. The tie-up, however, can change from project to project. The second link tells you the specific tie-up to use for weaving krokbragd. If you used the tie-up in the first post, you're right - it would come out all wrong. I see how this could be confusing, and I hope this clears it up.

    Hi, these are great tutorials. I have a rigid heddle only and I’m happy to use pick up sticks. But what is the best way to warp as the warp draft is for 4 shaft. So would I put ends for shafts 1 and 3 in holes and ends for 2 and 4 in slots? I could buy a second heddle and if I did then I know it turns it into 3 shaft with pick up stick for fourth shaft. Or I can make heddles too. Just not sure how to get started!

    • @wildgingerhandweaving4171
      @wildgingerhandweaving4171 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If I were you, I would start out with the "Weave Krokbragd on a Rigid Heddle" video that is specifically aimed at RH weavers. To set it up for that particular pattern, warp your loom with 33 ends (an odd number), making sure that the first and last threads go through slots. The krokbragd pattern is kind of uniquely suited for the RH, though. Beyond that, I have to confess that I am not a RH weaver and would have to do some experiments myself before I could advise you. I have more experience weaving multi-shaft patterns on tapestry or frame looms, which is totally doable and in some ways simpler than adapting those patterns for RH! There are a number of patterns I'd like to make specifically for 2 shafts, but I haven't gotten around to making them yet.

    Your tutorial is the clearest I’ve seen - thanks! Can I ask why you use 4 harnesses instead of 3 for krokbragd? Is that so you can weave other weft faced patterns on the same warp?

    • @wildgingerhandweaving4171
      @wildgingerhandweaving4171 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes! That is definitely the main reason. But I can imagine other reasons. Some looms aren't happy if you leave harnesses empty, for example, or you might want to use 4 harnesses in order to distribute your heddles more evenly (especially with a wider project). On the other hand, I definitely use the traditional 3-harness setup when I weave krokbragd on a 4-shaft counterbalance loom. It just depends on your circumstances.

    I have a loom with only 1 shaft and I make the sequences with the needle If you want to weave the pattern on a wider loom (with more threads) Do they start the same? For example, in the first row, you start with 1 above, 3 under, and end with 4 under, To continue the pattern, do we start from the beginning with 1 above, etc. ? will it work?

    • @wildgingerhandweaving4171
      @wildgingerhandweaving4171 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think what's confusing is that I'm using floating selvedges. Basically, the very first and very last threads aren't part of the main pattern. They are extra threads that make it quick and easy to make sure I don't have any gaps at the edges. To use floating selvedges, I always start OVER the very first thread and end UNDER the very last thread in every row no matter which row/shed of the pattern I'm on. You can use this method even if you're using a frame loom, but it's optional if you have another preferred method for managing your edges. In short: if you aren't using floating selvedges, ignore what's happening with the edge threads in my demo. Set up your loom with a multiple of 4 warp threads + 3. Here's the row-by-row pattern: Shed 1 = repeat (under 3, over 1) across and end with under 3. Shed 2 = repeat (over 1, under 1) across and end with over 1. Shed 3 = start with under 1, over 1, repeat (under 3, over 1) across, and end with under 1.

      Thank you sooooo much for these very needed clarifications, Did I understand correctly that, basically, in all krokbragd weaving, the exact same rows are woven as you detailed in your answer, and what produces the different patterns is the change in the color of the thread and its position in the pattern? @@wildgingerhandweaving4171
