NA5N "Pipsqueak" regen receiver: tour through the bands
This is my version of NA5N's "Pipsqueak" regen. My first homebrewed radio and a lot of fun to build. And it works!
Here's NA5N's original article on the build: www.ncqrpp.org/files/qrpp_volume_04.pdf
And here is WB3GCK's modification: www.qsl.net/wb3gck/pipsqk.htm
Mine tunes between 2-12 MHz (but I only had a 360+ pF cap, used 4 and 12 turns).

Hi all, here's a super-brief build guide for a portable antenna. I've had good contacts using 5 watts on CW from OK to AZ, CT, and OH (20 meters) and AZ, WY, KY (on 40 meters). It's 6-7 feet tall and tunes very well to both 20 and 40 meters (with the 40-meter extension). It has a fairly narrow bandwidth but is perfect for the CW portion of the band, and can be easily tuned by adjusting the tele...

How I connected an SDR to the TS-520 that lacks an IF output port. This should probably be similar for many old analog radios. Here are some links I found helpful: The Kenwood SM-220 manual: www.radiomanual.info/schemi/KENW_ACC/Kenwood_SM-220_user.pdf The Kenwood Hybrid group: kenwood-hybrids.groups.io/ Setting up HDSDR: th-cam.com/video/9elHuzN_-es/w-d-xo.html And the hardware used: RTL SDR v3...

The NA5N Link doesn't go to a pdf file. It is being redirected to a gambling site. Thought you'd lije to know.

Thanks for this, very useful. I have a 530 and a 830, so useful. Thanks too for the link to the hybrid group. I was having difficulty finding it.

My advice is to start gathering kits of parts for future builds.. You'll never find everything you need all at once anyway, so be patient as you compile a list and start looking around hamfests and eBay. You also spread out the expense over time that way. Also, if you have a hard time finding high enough value of tuning caps, consider switching in fixed value parallel connected mica caps and use a smaller value of the variable caps. You get finer tuning that way as well.

You're stuck on using a Raspberry. Just use a tablet. That's what I use. Keeping it simple, right?...

That receiver can demodulate a.m. only. To be able to receive side band you'd need a side band demodulator. That's why those voices sound garbled.

You can resolve cw or ssb with the receiver oscillating very gently. From G4FSN.

Try a small variable capacitor (say 5-10pf) paralleled with the main tuning capacitor. Also try backing off the rf gain control. This sometimes helps to “fine tune” the regeneration or provide a better mix on strong sub signals. Nice build and good sounding little rig. 73’s GW8PNE.

"Don't want to end with Brother Stair" ... Brother Stair is the end of all things ... and now speaks to us, over the air, from beyond the grave! Nicely done. What is the "RF knob? RF Gain? I noticed you never twiddled it as you did with the regen control and, of course, the tuning knob. I've seen many, many truly antique broadcast receivers (c.1923, say) that had three knobs but have never played with one to see how it worked. I assume they were regen like this one.

This is really cool. If WWIII goes down, we may have to rely on McGuyver approaches like this.

Maybe one of these cheap chinese DDS on the vfo out and that will get you a way to see actual frequency and might even allow you to remotely steer the TRX fully too? Cool vid :)

Just did this on a 520 Sports Edition (SE). I went with the drain of Q4 on the IF board though, as suggested in the manual for the KW station monitor. I have a reg. 520 too, maybe I'll try what you did. Easier spot to get to. Itching to try out but waiting foe more parts. Did the main filter caps. Just ordered C... 15-16? Different part number on the regular 520. But new manufacture dual 22ufs.

Is that a tube transceiver? I want to buy a old tube TRX encase one day we get a big sun flare hit us or if some cold country tries to use EMP weapons or something like that. Yes! if this happened then a pan adapter for an SDR would be useless but I highly doubt those to scenarios will take place. So if I have a old tube TRX laying around I may as well put some mileage on her.

This is a hybrid radio, where the majority of the circuits are solid-state, but the driver and final amplifier sections use vacuum tubes.

I think I found the problem: No one has ever told you "That Will Never Work!" Because, *as we all know* , home-brew stuff, especially antennas, that are designed and built by people who simply think things through *never* *work*. Glad you don't listen to those people. :-)
