Kendrick is better than Eminem. That’s not to say that Eminem isn’t exceptional. His original three album run is still phenomenal. He has humor, scathing political messages and societal commentary, and raps personally. While I think his post-sobriety music isn’t as enjoyable as his pre-sobriety music, there’s no denying that he’s still one of the goats of technical rapping (sometimes he’s too good for his own good). Kendrick definitely respects Eminem. He’s cited em in his top 5. I think Kendrick is better, and has a real argument to be the goat (not just a goat). He has true through-line concept albums that touch on deep topics, and music that is digestible in first listen, but with so much subtext and nuance that you can find new things in your 100th listen. The thing that Kendrick does that truly elevates him (other than being maybe the best at using his vocal performance to really bring interest to songs) is his unparalleled (and I believe unprecedented, at least in rap) ability to communicate an idea. To get a sense of this, listen to songs “worldwide steppers” or “the blacker the berry”. These songs have complicated and intricate messages that are understandable on the surface but also have contradiction, and unique perspectives. Taken with his excellent pen game, and his genuine love for the craft (somethjng he shares with Eminem), Kendrick today is untouchable. Listen to Untitled Unmastered for an example of songs that didn’t meet the cut for a Kendrick album, and you’ll get it. TLDR: Kendrick is better than Eminem, though Eminem (especially his first three records) is still excellent.

Eminem is an exhibition rapper like the Globetrotters. Kendrick is the GOAT because he embodies the whole culture and can do the really technical stuff too. And his music is just better because it’s entirely influenced by the culture that created it. Eminem doesn’t have an album as good as TPAB or GKMC; rapping + instrumentals

Growing up I was a massive Eminem fan, but taking in to consideration everything you need to be a great rapper Kendrick pretty much sweeps. Eminem's rhyme schemes are virtually unmatched and at his best his storytelling is legendary. Eminem has also probably had a bigger cultural impact, but he has had like a 10 year head start in that aspect. Kendrick's story telling is very close if not just as good as Em. Kendrick's word play is superior. Kendrick is more versatile. Kendrick has more flows. Kendrick's messaging and emotionality is stronger. Kendrick's discography is, in my opinion, better and FAR more consistent. Kendrick's albums are much better as a coherent listen and more conceptually interesting than even Eminem's best. There's an argument that Eminem is a better battle rapper but Em never won a battle against anyone as big as Drake.
