What can we learn from the record breakers? - Nuno Gomes, Karen Van Den Oeaver and Xavier Meniscus
The final and most anticipated moment of Diving Talks 2024 was the riveting closing debate featuring three world record breakers: Nuno Gomes, Karen Van Den Oever, and Xavier Meniscus. Moderated by **Gareth Lock**, with the invaluable assistance of Nathalie Lasselin helping Xavier communicate in English, the panel focused on the powerful question: "What can we learn from the record breakers?"As Gareth Lock aptly framed it, record-breaking divers push the boundaries of human endurance, overcoming immense physical, psychological, and physiological challenges. However, as much as records represent monumental success, they are not without their lessons. The panel shed light on the untold stories-the "icebergs below the surface"-that often remain hidden: the struggles, failures, near misses, and moments of intense learning that ultimately shape these record-breaking achievements. Each of the three divers shared their personal journeys, discussing the failures and setbacks they faced along the way. They emphasized how critical these challenges were to their eventual success and how they used those moments to evolve and grow. It became clear that every record is the result of relentless dedication, learning from mistakes, and pushing through adversity. These lessons transcend diving and can be applied to all areas of life, offering profound insights into resilience, mental fortitude, and the relentless pursuit of excellence. This thought-provoking conversation provided the Diving Talks community with not only a deeper understanding of what it takes to break records but also a renewed sense of inspiration and motivation. As the panel wrapped up, it was clear that the true takeaway was the importance of embracing both success and failure as essential parts of growth, learning, and personal development. It was a fitting conclusion to an extraordinary edition of Diving Talks, leaving everyone with a renewed commitment to push their own limits, embrace challenges, and keep diving deeper-both into the ocean and into themselves.#DivingTalks2024 #RecordBreakers #LessonsFromTheDeep #ResilienceInDiving #OceanExploration #PushYourLimits #DiveDeeper #LearnFromFailure #InspirationFromTheDepths #GarethLock #NunoGomes #KarenVanDenOever #XavierMeniscus #NathalieLasselin

Thanks for uploading. Another suggestion - please use a higher quality camera and/or upload resolution. Especially considering it’s a lecture based on photography…it’s painful to be watching this with the actual slides/photos in such low quality and with the weird rolling shutter effect happening, along with half the screen wasted with a bunch of people’s heads. ***edit*** looks like halfway through it switched to that view…much better.
Hi Jill. I really enjoyed your talk. And don't ya just love the curious common names of the freshwater mussels. Have Asian clams (Corbicula sp.) colonized your study area? I have found them in a number of the caves down here in Florida, always where surface water is shunted underground. Same with the Unionids.
Middle aged cold water divers may want to check out a documentary on "core body temperature recovery". The study was preformed on an older gentlemen climbing on Denali, his core temp recovery was substantially less than the younger mountain guides. I would imagine the same issues would be at play in extreme diving scenarios.
If someone is giving a remote presentation, it should be pre-recorded. That ensures audio and video are consistent and high quality. Large sections of the talk are incomprehensible because of network jitter
Wouldn’t liquid oxygen be the real solution?
Adding superfluous, unwanted functionality and features to the tech-range models seems the complete antithesis of simple & reliable. To make these points in a talk, then simultaneously add the laughable "Avelo mode" to the tech-focused Perdix is somewhat hypocritical. The recreational models, Peregrine and Tern, can be made to appeal to anyone and everyone - cram in functions, options, audible/vibrating alarms, etc. More is perceived as better for the casual consumer. But the tech models, Perdix, Petrel and (to a lesser extent) Teric should stick with the _"less is more"_ K.I.S.S. philosophy that initially made Shearwater popular with serious divers and differentiated it from most other computer manufacturers.
I was going to be VERY disappointed if there wasn't a Hindenburg joke somewhere in here. Glad I wasn't disappointed.
Thank you for having me!
Interesting presentation. We should have more like this at the following editions of the Diving Talks!
Awesome.
I agree with everything here but the business model sadly doesnt support it. Instructors make around $400-500 for 4 students over 3-4 full days of work and thats teaching to the minimum. Add in actually teaching skills to a competent level and youre adding in days. Not to mention that to have a DM on hand, which is volunteering their time because thats a non-paid position (for some reason). Dive professionals working out of shops are underpaid so youll get dive professionals who work to the level they are paid. Im not saying its right but it is what happens.
You talk about context, regarding reef safe etc. to protect skin, and the supposed massive impact these chemicals have on a reef, what about the thousands of divers who regularly pee hundreds of gallons if not thousands in there wetsuits near or on reefs reefs every day? Let me guess, corals love raw urine but not sunscreen! So hypocritical. Really?
This was awesome 😁👍🏼

I love that so many of my diving heroes are willing to sit together and talk! Learning and exploring are such important parts of diving, and I’m glad their experiences are being recognized celebrated.
That is the Diving Talks way and that’s what we want to do and share with the world. These stories have to be told.
Terrible sound recording
What about the content? I don't think the audio was that bad in terms of being able to understand what I was saying. What is wrong with the audio quality as I've just listened and it appeared fine.
@ Apologies, I found out my earphones had a glitch. Content ok, but nothing I didn’t know before, both in my professional life and diving.

Hello everyone. I just started comercial diving training two weeks ago. Your experience sounds like a game changer. Nobody knows about it in my school. I am at Panama City. My previous career is physical conditionning. Have you heard about yoga/Pranayama/breathwork techniques to help divers prior to deep dives?
It’s a great idea to replace Helium with hydrogen in Trimix gas.
Can't wait to see them we have a mine in the States called Bonne Terre even regular divers can do the first three trails you always have dive masters with you
