    this video is not only eye opening but simple to understand and to put in into practice, extremely useful, not too much redundancy and straight to the point. I was looking for a video just like yours Jessica, and every video was boring or not really what I wanted, but yours was amazing, I like the fact that you not only thought the price mark-up and to pay yourself a salary but the machinery, the tax and all the tools you use to elaborate the product you're selling. this video is 10/10 5 stars xx ⭐

    Your video is really helpful, and I appreciate how you've broken down the expenses involved in creating PDF sewing patterns. However, I feel the budget you’ve listed is a bit incomplete. For example, there’s no mention of costs for specific subscriptions to store photos, files, and other essential data. Also, there's the cost of the fabric used for the toile and protoypes and other necessary materials like rulers, and supplies, which all add up quickly. While it’s great you can work from home, not everyone has that option-especially those living in really small spaces, couples, or people with children who can’t use their living room as a workspace. In these cases, renting a studio becomes necessary, and with it come additional expenses like rent, electricity, internet, and other utilities. Another big point is the commission fees on platforms like Etsy, which are quite significant, especially for smaller businesses. And don’t forget the costs of hiring a professional photographer for high-quality photos, which can be a big investment. For those of us who aren’t native English speakers, translation services are another important cost to factor in. Finally, I think it’s also important to mention the expenses for paying testers who help with quality control. Having a group of testers ensure the pattern works well is crucial, but it’s another added cost that people might overlook. Thank you for sharing this information and motivating others to start their own brand-it’s really inspiring, but it’s good to acknowledge that the costs can vary greatly depending on individual situations.

      Hi! Thanks so much for your detailed input. My goal with this video was to show what's possible when you're just starting out. I didn't include things like sewing space, fabric, machines, and the necessary equipment to sew a garment because hopefully anyone becoming a sewing pattern designer is already a practicing sewist, which means they already have these resources. Purchasing new fabric that isn't already in your stash, renting a studio, paying for a photographer, etc, are all luxury expenses that are not necessities when you're just starting out. Once your business is cash flowing, you can absolutely reinvest money to make things better. For example, up until recently, all my Etsy listing photos were taken with my iPhone. That worked great and didn't hinder my ability to put out patterns. Recently I invested in doing a photo shoot, so I've since updated my Etsy listings 🥰

    sorry for the potentially silly question, im genuinely curious, wouldnt your personal wages, electricity for the place you run your business etc also be operating costs for the business?

    • @jessilous_closet
      @jessilous_closet 3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes! When you run a business from your home (at least in California), it's percentage based. So for example, I use a certain square footage of my home for my home office, so I can write off that amount. Please note that I'm not a tax professional and I work with a tax company called Collective to ensure that I'm writing off all my expenses correctly based on local laws 😊

    Day 1-So kinda had a little meltdown yesterday, like a 40 something year old having a full out 3 year old hissy fit. I mean-really? With all that is going on in the world right now? But yes, I admit that I did. I watched a DIY for how to create a raw hem/shark bit hem...and it came out great. Then, I somehow (okay, not somehow-I did it by stretching them as they were a little tight in the waist area) and the zipper broke. So, I put them right in the trash. Day 2, hissy fit all over and I thought okay-I'm sure there's another DIY to fix the darn zipper and here you are! Thanks so much! To both you for posting this quick and easy fix but also to my hero Adriene on fwfg because in the heat of the hissy fit, I did a 6 min yoga meditation that grounded me and helped me realize I'm in my 40s and not a toddler. Namaste.

    I handsew stuffed bears. They’re all completely unique from each other, and they take about 8 hours each to make. I’m worried if I price my art what it’s worth, no one will buy it. I’ve already gotten negative feedback from asking around about a 60-80$ price range but priced at minimum wage, these guys would start at 125$ without a profit margin. I’m not too sure what to do

    I'm getting more and more intrigued by working in Illustrator. Thank you for showing us how you were able to manipulate the sleeve pattern in the program. I'm going to check out Victoria Werner's course, because I would LOVE to learn to use Illustrator for drafting my personal sewing patterns. Currently, I'm working with paper, and it's so time-consuming to use my basic blocks to draft new patterns...

  • @isabellefischer5145
    @isabellefischer5145 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Talking about sleeve fitting issues is super important, because I feel that's where most modern patternmaking really is not up to par. Modern, vs, 18th and 19th century, I mean. I'm a bit disappointed that you decided not to make another toile with your changes. My experience tells me that while making the armscye smaller will help with the range of motion of your arm, making the shoulder seam longer to go to your natural shoulder point will hinder it. Illustrating my point: Look where your shoulder point is when you stand straight, with your arm down. Now lift your arm, and you'll see that all the muscles around the shoulder point will rise with your arm - so that shortening that shoulder seam instead of making it longer would actually help more. For really tight fitting garments, it helps to stop the shoulder seam at your bra strap - where the little dip is between neck and shoulder. Anyway - that's been my experience...

  • @isabellefischer5145
    @isabellefischer5145 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

    The experiences you're going through sound very familiar. I took some Craftsy courses to make a basic bodice block, but only became really happy with it when I triangulated my measurements - for example: to figure out the point at the side neck that serves as a measuring base (and is, in my opinion, VERY difficult to find properly, I measured it from the center waist point and from the side waist point, and working with paper (though I'm sure Illustrator could do that), I plotted both lengths in as arcs, and the point was where they cross. Plus it really helped to draw in the points I measured on my scrap- t-shirt - as you're doing right now with your waist tape. That's the only way I was able to come up with a good bodice block for me. By the way - you didn't talk about it, but it's really important to measure yourself with the type of bra you're usually wearing...

    I like the idea of the price tag. Myself, I sell fine art prints of my artwork, which cost more than cheap prints of course. I had an easier time making sales once I printed off a little sheet that went over the benefits of buying a fine art print (eg won't fade or discolour for a long time, vs cheap prints that can fade or discolour within a year or so). Plus I gram them myself and take care to use materials to improve the longevity of the print. It helps them understand it all, and they feel better knowing they're getting something that's good quality too.

    I must be tripping because the pattern pieces for the lower shell and for the center lining say cut on the fold but they do not look like they were cut on the fold in the pattern directions or with the pieces you are using. I'm also confused with lining up the notches of the gathered strip with the notches of lower shell because theres only one notch on the gathered strip but 2 notes on the lower shell (if you don't cut it on the fold, that is). I feel like this happens with patterns for me constantly so I wonder if I am reading them wrong :'(
