The yacht looks horrible. Also ß who was the Genius that said "we are predicting we can do transatlantics without fuel use"? IT'S A SAILBOAT. Jesus, some people need to really read a book or sth.

A 100 meter sailboat barreling along at 30 knots would be a hell of a sight to behold. It looks like there's no sheets or halyards. How do you raise and furl the sails? How do you reef? How close will she point toward the wind?

I can’t describe my astonishment when I first discovered that this yacht was built by my onetime college room-mate at Miami of Ohio or Muhammed Al Barwani of Oman. By way of contrast I own a seventeen foot canoe or the Spirit II by Wenonah Canoe of Minnesota. I like my canoe better because since it only weighs 41 pounds I can easily portage it to the next body of water when I run out of water. I can also haul it around on top of my compact SUV since I thought to order a canoe rack instead of one of those cheesy luggage racks. Then also I paid cash since it only cost $3,300. But something tells me that the owner of the Black Pearl gets laid more than I do.

I want to be loved not hated. if I bought something like that I would have to fill it with cannons and special forces because almost certainly someone would want to hurt me.

This was not some billionaire, but a scientist. Here's a brief overview of him: Billionaire Oleg Burlakov died of coronavirus in 2021 at the age of 71. The businessman's family is still fighting for their legacy, the most memorable lot being the yacht "Black Pearl" with solar panels instead of sails. Author of over 30 scientific publications and more than 5 scientific inventions, for which he was awarded the title of "Inventor of the USSR" Patented inventions A device for predicting the performance of electronic equipment, the patent was published in 1981, in co-authorship. A voltage regulator for an alternating current source, the patent was published in 1982, in co-authorship. An autonomous power supply system, the patent was published in 1984. A free-piston engine with a linear electric generator, the patent was published in 1989. A collapsing yacht mast, the patent was published in 2021.

It's strange I was thinking about electronic masts with solar sails as an option for modern sailboats then I watch this. 😮 Auto detect wind speed and direction, detect pressure on sails. Adjust to maximize wind capture but bring in sails if wind is blowing too hard. You could even set cruise speed and destination for auto pilot and it would use sails first to hit the number with electric motors to compensate so speed is maintained.

The plan for solar generation from PV sails was - for reasons no one has ever disclosed - not successful. It’s a pity the boat has been tied up in divorce and then probate litigation for most of its existence, I’m assuming the money tap required for the R&D / integration got turned off. She has now finally made a transatlantic - but even tho it was a “short” crossing, not actually continent to continent, she still drank 30k litres of diesel. Which for a sailing yacht is a bloody abomination.

4:11 -- The ship without masts. I think it looks much better. Under sail something is not right: there is far too little sail area to attain speed. This square-rigged design lacks the flexibility to make its overlapping silos to work together to make the ship's speed greater than that of the wind pushing it. The fastest of all commercial sailing ships, the windjammers from the late 19th century, are four-masted, square rigged barques that used this mechanical advantage to cross the Atlantic in record time. Check out some videos of windjammers and you'll see what I mean. Then compare those windjammers with this schooner. There IS no comparison because this is a wannabe sailing ship that would be helpless without its engines. Trying to greenwash the thing, a crewman claims regeneration capability from the props when the engines are shut down. Good luck with that. The ship can barely make headway with a brisk tailwind. On one of the helicopter videos you can see the sails luffing -- sailing's version of stalling a car engine. That earlier shot of this ship without masts reveals its streamlined beauty. The faux sails enable the owner to claim net zero pollution crossing the Atlantic. And yet its speed under sail is about walking speed. The sails and their operational hardware must have added tons of weight and millions of dollars, all for the purpose of validating the lie that this ship is carbon neutral. It isn't by a long shot, and incurring all that expense in order to make a false claim says a lot about the ship's owner and builders.

By the way, I also developed a sailboat. Only much more high-tech and conceptually much more modern. I wanted to know, are there pontoons or hydrofoils? I looked again and there are no hydrofoils. I look on the Internet and see that no one has progressive ideas, neither in cars, aviation, in shipbuilding, the last thing that was interesting was Zimvolt, nor in rocket science, Starship steam rocket with a design from the 40s of the 20th century, Wernher von Braun even had a more interesting design in 40 years when he wanted to launch the first astronaut. There you have it, just a high-quality sailboat, a Rolls-Royce yacht and that’s it.

Based on sail shape, it looks like it can really only sail downwind or a a beam/broad reach which would greatly diminish its overall performance as a sailor.

this type of one off sailboat always hard to make it happen ,a design on the paper turn to the actual real thing , absolutely crazy , put money aside , in engineering stand point , you never know is really work and functional like the designers intended, so easy to missing the target ,in terms of performance , im very interesting to know is they totally match the expectations ?? or way off the engineering team performance targets , its a private owner boat i guess , 8 years later , want to know is any new information about this sail boat , something like maintenance and need a big crews to operate kind of stuffs . one thing i doubt is they said sailing cross atlantic ocean ,with out any diesel or gas generator , but if they really did it just by wind sailing and solar , thats extremely impressive.
