Thanks so much for this. In my mind I had imagined this is how it's done, but I haven't set my machine up yet. Seeing you do it cuts out that experimentation time, thanks so much!
@@weaviejeebies Glad to help!
OMG, "Tinking" on a knitting machine! You just saved me so much frustration, who knew it was that easy to 'undo' a mistake?! Thanks so much!!!
Wonderful, glad to help!
would this help to make doing a mattress stitch easier too?
I imagine it would help it look a bit tidier, yes!
awesome cause Im new to knitting machine and I was having trouble seeming up cause It was hard to tell with just the way it does edges going back and for look more knotted but I want a nice edging to on some of the other stuff Im trying to do .Thank you so much@@gretchentracy4550
I love this. You just explain it, no extra nonsense, no stories, just straight and to the point.
Ha yeah I hate suffering through unnecessarily long TH-cam videos!!! 🤣
Maybe show us what it looks like??

i’m a hand knitter but i’m thinking of buying a knitting machine. i’d want to use it for more complex colourwork pieces that would take an age by hand but i’m struggling to find a good machine second hand. with these punchcard brother machines do you know if there’s any way to knit colourwork patterns longer than 24 stitches? i’m a complete novice when it comes to knitting machines and have no idea where to start in finding a good one for me. if you know anything that could be of help i’d be so thankful :))
Check eBay, that's where I got mine! And the punch card size is pretty standard at 24 although I think there are machines that go up to 36... I have no idea how difficult that would be to find though!
@@gretchentracy4550thank you !
Which model is this
Honestly, I never exactly figured out. I got it second hand!
@@gretchentracy4550 The model number is on the right hand side of your knit carriage, you have a KH-891, which is probably from the early to mid 1980's, Mum had a KH-840, which was from the late 70's/early 80's and then she replaced it with the KH-910 around 1984 when the electronic machines came in. I hope that helps.
@@janatherton9194 Thank you!
@@gretchentracy4550 You're welcome!
Thank you for the excellent visual. This made the written directions make sense. Thanks.
Thank you so much for this , couldn't figure it out from written instructions in a vintage pattern
Glad to help! :)
For knitting sleeves, how to increase and decrease .
Hi! I don't have videos for that but I found this for you, hope it helps! Increasing: th-cam.com/video/kYgHHD0Nd48/w-d-xo.html Decreasing: th-cam.com/video/F1K3DMdBxi8/w-d-xo.html
Not sure what I'm doing wrong but it's jot working for me .. back to the e wrap 😢
I'm sorry to hear that!
Thank you! I should have read the manual since didn’t realize I needed to push that button! Thank you!!! ☺️
Good demonstration. Thank you for keeping it brief.
Thanks! Exactly what I needed to know! I made a glaring mistake about 10 rows back and didn't know how possible it was to remove and rehang my project.

You make this look so easy!!! I recently was given my grandmother's knitting machine (a Toyota KS950--it's fairly similar to yours as far as I can tell), and I have been struggling. I finally managed to get the second color in without tying my whole project in knots after watching this, which feels like an accomplishment, but I'm having an issue with my machine not always pulling the new stitches all the way through the loops. I'm confident it's my error and not a machine malfunction because my grandma was very skilled (like, she wrote her own manuals and everything), and the machine worked perfectly for her. Do you (or anyone else) have any ideas what my issue could be?
My best guess would be that you need to weight your work more! The manuals really really understate how crucial weight is to your machine working properly, especially once you're doing more than one color! Hopefully that helps!!! :)
@@gretchentracy4550 That might explain why I got a 15 pound box full of weights of different shapes and sizes with the knitting machine! I assumed they were extras for the bulky machine I don't have yet. It turns out that I am whatever skill level precedes "beginner" because "beginner" instructions assume way more knowledge about knitting machines than I have!😅Some extra weight and a little less tension in color 2 has pretty much resolved my issues I think! Thank you!
@@amarie9098 awesome! And I agree, there are a lot of things that are assumed at first but not at all obvious to beginners!!!!
What would you say is the best punchcard knitting machine for absolute beginners?🙈
I don't have enough experience with different brands to give you great advice, but if you can find a used brother machine that has the punchcard function, they are a great place to start!
I’m curious if I can mail you my punch card design could you make newborn clothes for me? I can pay you for your help
Hi I wish I could but I just moved and don't have space to set up my knitting machine anymore... Sorry!

Hello Gretchen Tracy, i have a silver link 5 and a DK 8. Unfortunly i can not connect it with the computer. Do you have any experience with this kind of problem? Thank you for your answer.
I wish I could help but I haven't had this problem. Good luck troubleshooting!!!!
Very helpful thanks! I was trying to make socks and couldn't figure out how to knit to the left of needles that were in holding position, this was exactly the information I needed, thanks for sharing
Thank you so much for the detailed demonstration. I couldn't grasp how to do the stitch properly until I saw your video! Have a great day! Best regards, Kerstin 😊
Great to hear! Glad I could help!!
If your machine is a Brother's or a Knitking machine then it will read the 1st. row of the pattern 7 rows from the bottom of the card. The large button on the right can be pushed down and turned until the card is ready to read 7 rows up from the bottom of the card. Those 2 full punched rows of the card are covered when you pin the card together. So the 1st. row with the selector button set so the card will not roll will set your pattern, then release the selector so the card will advance each row Glad to see young folks knitting on machines. Keep up the good work.
I love it!
you don't speak loudv enough on video
I'm sorry to hear that! I try my best with the equipment I have.
turn your volume up, it's fine
It is very good
hey I have a question How do you apply patterns to your knitting machine?
In this particular video I'm using software and a compatible machine. Most knitting machines are older and use punch cards, or simply can't knit color patterns at all.
There was no volume on video
Hmm, I have no problem hearing it on my end. Perhaps you muted it out there's a problem with your device?
This is so well explained! I don't have one of these machines, or knit, but I'm finding this fascinating
Please, are there 200_200 pins machine?
Hi! For home machines, I've only seen ones with 100 needles on each side, so 200 in total.
Thank you for helping me with this

Can you include in your video how to start the new yarn. Thanks
Hi! Unfortunately I can't make a new video because I have a thumb injury. However, I just use a simple intarsia join, like they show here: www.google.com/amp/s/blog.tincanknits.com/2013/01/29/intarsia/amp/ Hope that helps! :)
Thank you for this video. I was given a Knit King bulky that seems to be very similar to your Brother. I have avoided the punch card option because the manual is not very detailed or clear. Time to give it a try! Edit: Here it is , two years later, I'm trying again and have rewatched your video after having a hard time. You provide important details that I've seen nowhere else- carriage off bed to set, plain knit until pattern needles come out, and how to thread second color. Seems obvious in hind sight but sometimes those simple details can be stumpers!

Hello mam. I have trouble with faireisle knitting. While card knitting, needles droped the stiches from left side. Any solution?
When stitches drop you often need more weight. You might also try tensioning your yarn with your hand - sometimes the yarn pulls out too far and then stitches drop. Hopefully that helps! :)
@@gretchentracy4550 Thanks mam. I tried as you suggested, but not.
You might also need to move the cartridge further over to the left when you reach the end of the row - if you're switching directions too quickly it may also drop stitches.
@@gretchentracy4550 Okay. Will try again...

Thank you! Im assuming that you hand stitch the other side down. Correct? Or do you just let it curl.
I just let it curl! You can hand stitch it if you want though. :)
