About Old Barnsley In Colour. - Each video (volumes) has 32 images all of which were originally black & white. I use many different pieces of software on my MAC to colourise / upscale / repair / clean / add skies etc.
My name is Stuart Sykes and I have lived in Barnsley all my life and its my passion to restore old black and white photographs of Barnsley. If I have a wish its to leave something to posterity and so here they are - I wish my parents who were both from the Barnsley area could have seen these images, I know they would have loved seeing them and remembering.
The images in this video have been sourced from various places including internet searches, post cards, via email, messenger and other local websites. 1:58 The Trading Post.
Brilliant as always
I was born and bred in Barnsley, hard but happy times ❤
Fabulous takes me back x
Thankyou I was born a Barnsley lass.I have not been back for many years so looking at your photos brings back wonderful memories x Jean from stain cross
Have you got any with the old bridge inn and cross keys Darfield
Thank you again for the great photos. I always look forward to seeing them.
Great job buddy, remember cudorth baths well, Brrrrr!
I bumped in to an old lass, years ago, she said you should go over Yella watters, I said why's it called yellow watters, she replied, cos, watter's yella..still makes me laugh..Hxx
She wor reight :)
Where were the Yellow Waters?
Running parallel with the motorway near Gilroyd
Great Houghton, Brooks shop, was brought up on that street- New Street, Sandhill.
Thanks for the info!
That last image! We used to play at the 'Yeller Watters' when I was little.
Seen a lot of these now, and it feels like a time machine watching them. I would love to go back and take a walk around. It's hard to connect modern Barnsley to these images because so much has changed. I was an '80s kid and it seems there was a massive change from 60s - 80s and not for the better, it looks like attitudes changed completely and pride in the areas people lived in went away. The images of Barnsley around the 1960 look a lot smarter than even 1969 where we can see Kes sets and locations. The nostalgia for a place I wasn't even a part of at the time is really amazing, but I can think back to my grandparents and parents who did. Thank you for doing these. They are essential to preserve what was.
Wow i thought the muckstacks was mountains at first glance its amazing to see barnsley asnt changed that much when u look at these pictures most buildings are almost the same ❤
Yes they do
Love this Stuart
Thank you Stuart for the lovely photos .
Glad you like them!
My dad was manager at john blundell started as a collector worked his way up to manager and then area controller from ealy 1970s to retirement mr A Sharpe
Interesting Stephen - my dad mentioned it quite a lot when it was "The Prinny" - unfortunately I never took much notice
Clean maintained streets.
That might have something to do with my upscaling application - sometimes it removes some stuff it thinks shouuldn't be there
Always great to watch Stuart 👍
Thanks Garry - I'll keep posting till I run art'
awesome Stuart
Thank you
Is Park Cottage actually Wombwell Hall?
Fantastic pictures, really brings the old streets to life.
Thanks pal
Outstanding. The photo of men returning from WW1!
Yup - makes us all feel very proud
Stuart, thankyou for all you do, tharra top sort owd warrior 👍 👏
Very welcome
3.26 Royal Mews, looks like a funeral has been taking place, the vehicle on the left is a horse drawn hearse.
Wow - Dorothy Hyman - I remember one time when she came through Cudworth in an open top bus. I was only really small but I remember the crowds & all the noise/cheering as she passed by. Your videos bring back so many memories- thank you.
Thanks for sharing!
Another publication of pure White people, no diversity at all, again! I can't see one Muslim person in these pictures, no rainbow diversity flags, Nothing!
My 5 times great grandmother was the original owner and landlady of the Pheasant Inn at Ardsley (from the 1830s) - Elizabeth Owram nee Micklethwaite. Thank you for these great photos!
Nice one Gillian :)
These are lovely to see. It pains me to think how many medieval and Tudor buildings have been swept away in Barnsley. Shambles Street alone, properly cared for and preserved, would rival any street in York.
Agreed!
Excellent as usual. Thank you for all your hard work, Stuart.
Its not hard work - I love it!
Great photos I really look forward to seeing them.
Plenty more to come Gloria!
Love these old views, so many memories. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
Lovely to view them❤
❤❤👍👍😊😊
A1 as usual Stuart
Thank you - I try
The photo outside the Clarence Hotel, "Amos" sitting on a donkey that belonged to my Grandfather William Bywater who is stood at the donkeys head. A Mr Grice (a relative through marriage) is at the other end. I have this photo at home. It's lovely to see it in colour. On the back of my photo it says that Amos was Barnsley football teams mascot.
Thanks for the info Jean - all the best
Would love some of these photos made into jigsaws.❤
I’m born and bred in Barnsley and have lost all my old folk, so looking at old Barnsley is wonderful. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication.
Glad you enjoyed it
My parents had a shop opposite Nedams foundry on Pontefract road. Love the photos more please.
I'm on it !
😊I would love a time machine too,I lived on Pontefract road in the 50s/60s my playground was the marketplace walking down the gas nook to get there. Then worked at Leslie Frances. What memories.
I'd give my right arm to go back and take some photos (or videos) - Leslie Frances was my sisters favourite place to have her hair done..
It's a pity you're not able to post any photos taken close to the old Birdwell Police Station looking towards Hoyland Common when it was a peaceful junction with a small shop opposite and fields behind rather than the monstrosity that the place is now - so much for progress!
I'll post em when I get em - keep watchin..
My grandfather was a pit deputy at Monckton. Died within two weeks of retirement in 1961.
Sad
Thank you, great memories.
Glad you enjoyed it
Have you got any old photos of cudworth, loving the videos
yes
Dang
Yer darn tootin'

Thank you so much .
You're most welcome
A1 as always Stuart, but its pure sacrilage what they did to the barnsley canal
yup - agreed. Foresight is a commodity that no-one seemed to have in abundance!
Excellent as usual. Thanks Stuart. BTW, that late 1950s shot of the Congregational Church on the Sheffield Road at 5:25 is almost a spitting image of the chapel that stood on the Sheffield Road between the German Kitchens and Strafford Grove in Birdwell.
Thanks Gordon - I'll keep em coming :)
Fantastic yet again.. 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
What is so special about a steam train at Cudworth in 1952? Crowds turn out today to see a train like that, but then it was quite normal. I don't understand!
