Without Kurri and Coffey he was still leading the league in points, check out his rookie season. Messier wasn't much at the time. Gretzky played a load of hockey throughout his career without much rest. He represented Canada in just about every international tournament he could have played in. Lemieux meanwhile sat out for reasons such as a dislike of a coach.
