Spoon Carving from a Practice Blank

I bought some spoon carving blanks to practice with different types of wood , these are very small which makes getting the bowl shape more difficult and this one is made of beechwood.

Very interesting and informative! Thanks for uploading the video and your expertise 👍
Nice.
If you look at the stuff in your kitchen draw you can learn a lot from what angles you might what to carve. [depending on what you want to use the spoon for] The standard shop bought wooden cooking spoons designed for stirring in a pot are straight, whereas ladles have a simple angle because all you want them to do is scoop stuff up. And things like tea spoons, eating utensil spoons and forks have the ‘Crank’ [a spoon can have a curved handle so to fit in the soup bowl at an appropriate angle that suits the size of the bowl].
Thank you for showing me what I intuitively felt but couldn't really pin down as to WHY in so many spoons that just felt 'off'.. 😊
This just reminded me I have a whole budget of wood carving tools sitting somewhere in the house 🤔
Good work. Wish I had the patience. What wood did you use Rob?
Hi mate These were some practice blanks I bought off of Amazon, I needed the practice 😁😁😁 These ones were beech wood.
All look great 🎉
Brilliant 🤩👊🌟
Wonderful & Amazing creation by man🎉
Thanks for the video! New to spoon carving, but got some blanks to try. This is very timely for me. What is the pebble/burnishing step for? And any suggestions about type of stone or pebble to use? Do some work better than others (obviously shape might matter, but type of rock?)
Thanks, i’ve just started using the pebbles to burnish the spoons, When oiling the spoons they look great but as soon as the oil dries you end up with a mat dull finish, and burnishing is like polishing the wood without using any polish. You need to apply a lot of pressure to compress the surface of the wood and the friction created by the rubbing action evens out the polished area. [it is similar to when you look at the wooden handle of a well used tool, the area where you grip the handle becomes worn, smooth and polished by the repeated use of holding it in your hand]
Thank you, that really helps alot!
"That's not a knife, this is a knif.... oh wait, that's a spoon."
They are amazing 🤩
That’s very impressive 👍
I can’t believe I’m the first to like and comment. That is a beautiful buck saw. I’ll enjoy your carvings Glad I found you All the best Johnny

It is from the neighbour’s ’Bay Tree’ They originally bought it in a plant pot so it remained quite small, but they then planted it in the ground and it quickly grew into a full sized tree.
@@robg521 it's clear the Tree wanted to move into your backyard. Must be the energy 😂!
Beautiful
Dope AF spoon, Rob G.
Good work man 🎉
Nice job there Rob.
How far has the spring unwound before it stops? Friction from every piece that moves all adds up. You need to burnish shafts that serve as pivots smooth and hard with wax and then do the same to pivot holes on moving parts. You can burnish them by rubbing with another waxed toothpick, smooth scrap of wood, bamboo chopstick or even a piece of smooth metal. There also needs to be a bit of play between the pivot and pivot hole (about 5° of tilt). With both surfaces burnished with wax it will be much better. You can test using the smallest amount of thin oil (like sewing machine oil) in between the bearing surfaces after that, but you'll need to test. Use just a tiny amount (apply a small bit with a sewing needle) and see if it improves still. Burnishing though is what's most important. It smooths and also hardens the surfaces which also prevents wear. It's tedious work. Start with the parts of the clock that move the most. The escapement, anchor pallets, balance spring, fork and lever or pendulum pivots. These pieces must move very freely. However, a tight pivot on the winding spring, second gear or any other driven part can cause a huge loss of power and stop the clock prematurely. ALL moving, rotating parts should actually feel somewhat loose without spring or weight tension or they'll bind up under load when running and the clock will stop. Most people think " if I want a clock to run with precision, the parts need to have a precise fit". That's true only in certain areas, like a balance spring assembly needs to be balanced and the hairspring kept flat at right angles to the shaft, which shouldn't wobble. The escapement wheel and anchor pallets need to be adjusted to engage at the correct angle and depth (burnish the escapement wheel teeth surfaces too, they take a lot of wear) and pendulums need to be set in beat and length adjusted. But otherwise, a too precise fit causes friction and errors in timekeeping. If you haven't sanded all tooth surfaces smooth, or they feel a bit tight when engaged with another gear you will want to go back and smooth and burnish them too. Gears should not engage and feel snug. They should engage yet still feel loose and turn very easily. If they're tight, sand or file the notches and burnish. Backlash is perfectly ok. All gears are driven in one direction only. It's pretty cool that these laser cut puzzle/kits can make this even possible much less this easy. Wood isn't the best, nor easiest thing to make a clock out of. There are still a few tricks to success that they can't duplicate in the kit.
God has spoken.

Hey man! Just found your channel and i tell Appalachian stories on my channel but in my spare time I do a little carving (nothing to brag about lol) but, I enjoy it and definitely enjoy your videos and salute you on your skills brother! Thank you. Have a good'n
Simplemente genial, que madera utilizó
Thank you, I used Basswood, which in from the ‘Lime tree’ It is soft and easy to carve, really good for beginners which is why I use it 😂
♥️♥️👍👍👍
Nice
Well done
I saw a comment where you said your not good as some other guy on the chess pieces you made and said you gotta video of it and dude your chess pieces look amazing I just started wood whittling and carving and I'm using a few old wood carving knifes I found in my fiance's uncles work shop that passed away while we was cleaning it out and she inherited all his old tools half done projects and junk as well that was in there and other stuff of value since he rebuilt and machined boat motors and car motors full machine shop I'm setting up in my racecar shop I race circle track and the free machines will definitely save me money and make me money on racing engines and I'll be able to do what ever I need to do my self which makes it where I will always have a front running fast motor every race in the outlaw limited latemodel asphalt class I race in lol. But anyway love your chess pieces I'm gonna try and make another set but mine are small for playing not that big
Love your fist. Curious what you think the required skill level is carve something like this? I was wanting to make two and put a “handle” between the two. This would serve as the handle for a bowl turned on a lathe. For the record, that’s cool AF!
Hi Mike, thanks for watching. [carved hands holding a bowl as a handle… great idea😁👍] I’m only a beginner myself so I would struggle to assess what other people could do, in my younger days I worked as a craftsman in the heavy duty electrical industry so acquired manual dexterity skills, and they seem to transfer to this nicely. I can say that found this quite difficult to, my carved Shark video looks to be more difficult but I actually found that easier than this fist. I think that this is because the shark was made up as I went along with just a rough sketch and idea of what I wanted to produce, but with the fist it is dimensionally correct to my own hand, so I was working to and referring to measurements constantly while carving it. Good luck with your project 👍😁 Also I did all of the final shaping and details with a multi bladed wood carving knife, where I think a professional would have used chisels and found it easier.
super!👍

I've been enjoying watching your carving Rob. Great work..
Thanks Mate, It’s good to be creative, i haven’t been doing it long but I find skills you develop through life are transferable, and they set you in good stead so I am really enjoying it 😁👍
@@robg521 Where do you get your basswood from if you don't mind me asking? Is it easy to carve?
@@robtherover Amazon and eBay. Basswood is usually from the lime tree, and is easy to carve hence why they give it to beginners to carve .. [which is why I’m using it 😂😂] Trying to find it of larger sizes on Amazon and EBay is a pain because it is bloody expensive. I need to find another place to resource it. I don’t belong to any carving clubs or such so don’t know anyone else who does so have no contacts. I need to find somewhere that supplies it at a reasonable price.
Супер!!!
Extremely nice work. I am envious! God Bless!
