The Breaker: A Modern Martial Arts Epic
The Breaker is a massively successful manhwa that had the unfortunate timing of being released before the big webtoon boom. That means that while a lot of older anime fans might know about it. It's practically unknown to modern anime and manga fans. I think it's time I put more a more modern spotlight on this series and show why it became such a big hit in the first place.
P.S. I really am never beating the 2000's anime youtuber allegations...

Roy Mustang and Chess: A Character Analysis

This is probably the most mainstream video I've done but the topic for it is surprisingly low on TH-cam which was kind of a surprise when coming up with research for this video. Fullmetal Alchemist is one of the most talked about shows on TH-cam and my own individual video wouldn't really have much to add onto it but talking about my favorite character? I can do that. #anime #fullmetalalchemist

@FenixPJ_ I get it! These series is a special one. In the sense it combines the over the top yet more grounded martial arts action of the 80's, with the more modern sensibilities of the 2000s in terms of artstyle and characters. Gotta say this genuinely looks intriguing! I can't thank you enough for making a video about. I have been a fan of your videos eversince the first Yu-Gi-Oh video! Breaker was the ish when i read it back in the day. I fell off between Breaker 2 and Breaker 3 because of the break between them. I'll have to reread the series. It was definitely a solid piece of work. Veritas was a similar series that consumed me while reading. Unfortunately, it was cancelled at such a pivotal cliffhanger. It followed a similar formula of; kid meets mentor, mentor teaches student, but the master is killed off screen, and the student goes to the school affiliated with those who killed his master. Great story.

Oh, Scryed. You had such potential. It's just a shame you couldn't get a grasp on your power scaling, lost motivation half-way through, causing you to falter on a satisfying conclusion. I honestly thought the direction they were going for was that Kazuma's power had evolved to steal the power of other Alter Users he's defeated. Kind of like a less murder-y High Lander. Which was why anyone he beat went into a coma (Until they weren't) or couldn't use their power. The evolved form of his arm even has a syphon in his hand to sell this plunder ability. I thought the physical breakdown of his body was caused by using himself as a medium or having acquired more power than his moral form could handle. Implying sacrifice for power. I truly expected the Crystal in the Alter Forest to be a sign of warning to Kazuma as the natural conclusion of his journey. Being a man made of pure Alter energy living on instinct as he no longer had a mind. Sadly, none of these theories panned out. We got a random villain at the end rather than playing into Martin as the true cold-calculating villain. Martin was very close to becoming a Magneto-like figure who was just waiting for the right Alter power to show so they could assure independences from the Main Land. Then the series pretty much went off the rails to try and wrap up. It's clear they were just going by an episodic writing practice and didn't truly plan a conclusion from the start. At least, not one that was cleared by whoever was putting money into this.

Brilliant retrospective. Yu-Gi-Oh is one of my favorite manga along with Dragonball and Full Metal Alchemist. I went from watching the dub to finding poorly subbed originals to reading the manga all while playing the card game. I recently got back into building an OCG deck for nostalgia and to play the game with some of my friends again. It's a Blue-Eyes deck that includes in the extra deck a Blue-Eyes Alternative Ultimate Dragon: a card that Takahashi-sama drew art for. It means something different for me since his passing. As an introvert myself back in my youth, the manga's vision of strength through unity always filled me with hope that I would also make friends like Yugi did. The ones I did find are like my family now. It wasn't always through games, but the example of having each others back like Yugi and Jonouchi did helped inspire me to not just help my friends but to use that friendship to help us grow and stand on our own when needed. I could probably best summarize it in a quote I've seen attributed to a few people but rings true with me: "Be strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when you need help, and brave enough to ask for it." A great complement to "Something you can show but can't see."

The Japanese version of the film introduced an interesting plot point that I wished they had explored a little more: Yugi being one of the Plana. It would have been interesting to see Yugi go on an adventure with power from him and not something he inherited from the Puzzle.

This is one of my favorite anime and I still watch it from time to time. I remember watching this on Adult Swim back in the day. Of course, back then I had a vague understanding of what anime was since my only exposure was CartoonNetwork/Adult Swim. I did love their powers evolving and seeing the toll it takes on their bodies. And I do agree, wish we could have explored why and what the real damage and side affects would be for them. Side note, I did not know there was a manga, actually never found one for it. But seeing the pages that you managed to find, I think I'm ok not looking for it. If that manga was my introduction to this series, I probably wouldn't have given the anime a chance.

It's literally just one long tournament arc, as the story. I just re-read the series, since I stopped at the Faudo arc, as a kid, and got to experience the ending for the first time. It was so beautiful, terrifying, and glorious. I have never cried for a manga before, and this made me cry so hard. I'm glad we got the sequel coming out now!

I have read the full manga (one of the few series I actually own), and ya, it's not great. - Kazuma's alter doesn't work the same - Wanton nudity and death stuff that just doesn't feel right - Story's more generic "MC fights his way thru enemy base" at most points that I can remember - etc... The anime got a lot of art books and pamphlets and stuff which are pretty cool too look thru if you can find em as well.

I love that Kaiba is so extra, that even the original Japanese version of the movie points out that his ego is so strong it straight-up negates Diva's ancient Egyptian magic. Also, let's just keep in mind that Kaiba built a space-elevator and private space station, and invented portable hologram-projectors and VR systems that directly tap into the user's brain. IN THE YEAR 1997! They still use freaking VHS cassette tapes for movies and shit like that, yet here we have Kaiba just building a private space-station in the shape of his company logo, because fuck his haters, I guess. A lot can be said about Kaiba, but he sure doesn't half-ass things.

Kaiba absolutely outclasses every other Shonen Manga Rival when it comes to being obsessed with beating his rival. The guy literally advanced society several decades, possibly even a century or two, overnight, creating portable hologram-projectors and building a space-elevator with an orbital station, where a super-advanced AI worked for two years on studying a puzzle, the space elevator also serving as a gateway to the afterlife. Keep in mind that Yu-Gi-Oh! takes place in 1997, and DSoD in 1999! They still use freaking VHS-tapes for movies, yet Kaiba's out there advancing society's tech-level just because he wants to play a children's card game.

It's too bad we never got to see the mud-wrestling brawl between Mimori and Scheris. Would've been as epic as anything else in the show. I also would've settled for a proper beach episode revolving around the two, but as was said, it's not that sort of series... meaning no mud-wrestling either. Still, a wilderness bath scene with Mimori would've been swell.
