Yeah, this wasn’t my first CSX Autorack with a DPU. In fact, the time I caught CSX 911 and a CN SD70M-2 leading an autorack, that same train also had a DPU. It is just MUCH less common on CSX than it is on NS, and probably even less common along flatter routes like what (I assume) M211 runs. I’ve seen it more than once, too, just very seldomly.

Apparently, it is for when they travel through the Appalachian Mountains. Passenger locomotives only have power in their front trucks, which, although good for passenger operations, makes them rather mediocre at providing muscle and traction. The second unit is meant to provide additional traction in mountainous areas. The same is done on the Crescent. There isn’t really a good place to drop an extra Amtrak locomotive between there and Florida, so they just double-head them into and out of Florida. But yeah, it is pretty pathetic without that context. Considering I have seen a single GP38 (which is half the horsepower of Amtrak locomotives) pulling twice as many axles as this entire train, it does look a bit overpowered.

It was! But I025 was longer. I forgot to mention in the description that I026 was going slow, possibly to drop off crew for M211.

It’s always a good idea to attend a pow wow and ask. Most would be more than happy to explain their heritage and its meaning. CoG often gets announcers who will give an explanation before the dance starts.

The proper entrance was at the opposite side of the circle, and I wasn’t comfortable leaving my phone unattended. I did participate in an intertribal later on, but I didn’t record that one. Also, as flattering as it is to be told I might dance better than some of the people in there, I have to strongly disagree. My feet do not sync with the drum beat at all!

Yes it was! I’m always hoping for a recreation of the excitement of that night! Closest I’ve come so far was the UP AC6000 I saw in Austell over summer, and of course the HUs and flared MACs I’ve seen.

Depends on loco model. Geeps and SD40s only travel without cars to go pick them up as local switchers. Larger locomotives travel like that as either power moves, or for switching. A single GEVO could be a switching local, or a power move.

The diamond cam from VRF is located at a business near the yard and immediately due East of the diamond interchange. They are fine with rail fans hanging out there as long as they don’t park in their customer parking spaces. The building does provide sufficient shade throughout the day, and the tall grasses mark the CSX property.

Also, have fun! They go slow, but there’s lots of them!
